Title: forum members - fakes
Post by: carpet ride on November 27, 2014, 12:38:22 am
Are any mods actively trying to delete fake members?

I just looked up a fake that appeared months ago... GGellert, and it's still here

If not, I can see the positive in letting the forum member count increase, but the negative is it's not accurate for anyone trying to analyze the forum

What does your forum analysis reveal?

Well, for one, our total membership count is not right

Is it possible to see the full list of user names @bitsapphire?

Anyone can search through the whole member list. It seems pointless to try to beat sockpuppets though. I don't see what kind of analysis you could be doing that assumes you can effectively do this sort of de-duping.

I suggest all accounts meeting one of the following to be removed:

-Have been registered for 3+ months and have not made a single post;

-Have only capital letters and numbers as account handle;

-Have 'bit' somewhere in their name;

-Their account starts with a [t]

Wait. What?
I did not thought out my last criteria...as I just killed my and toast's accounts.

There are a lot of free-speech issues without a forum having sock puppets.  You have to be on top of kicking out the abusive ones.   It also enables scammers.  Those are the main downsides, but even scammers can make sock puppets when you try to get rid of them.

The upside is anyone can make another account and give a view from a different standpoint.  This can be used to manipulate people but it still allows maximal freedom in stating one's belief without repercussion.  Look at bitcointalk and how much it has flourished.  A lot of bad things have happened, but it has also been a huge site for innovation etc.

I'm not so much referring to sock puppets as I am referring to robots like GGellert, view its profile and notice the outgoing link.  ...

There are a lot of these, and I am asserting we are not really at 7900 members and Id like to know how many we really have
