Title: Feeds - why do you vote for delegates without feeds?
Post by: Shentist on December 06, 2014, 07:30:42 am
i am really concerned. Many delegates do not publish feeds. At this moment in time only 59 delegates provide bitUSD feeds. I believe if the market will shut down because we have not much feeds it will have a bad impact on BTS.

So every delegate provide feeds or quit your job. Especially every delegate paid more than 3%.
- why we have still so many INIT delegate without feeds? do we still need them? if yes, install a feed script.

everyone should consider to take everyone out of their votes and maybe we can elect more reliable people.

Can you provide a list of delegates that aren't doing feeds?

Remember that you can sort the columns by clicking on the titles, makes it easier to see all the delegates without feeds.

I will stop voting for delegates who don't provide feeds regardless if they are 100%, 10% or 3% pay.

I've recently set up a delegate for the first time. Setting up feeds is toughest part - there's little information on how to do it, and it is scattered around many threads. I'm still not sure if I've successfully managed to do so. I'm also not sure if I should be wasting time on it, if they are to be discontinued. Bottom line - more information needed.

Does this show accurate info for new delegates?

Also, any chance bitsharesblocks could show the delegates with slates, and the delegates recommended on them?

Feeds are updated every 2 minutes so should be. However you can only publish feeds once you're in the top 101.

I'll see if I can add some slate info.

Hmm, so this is a kind of catch22 for new delegates. We can't tell if standby delegates are publishing feeds until we make them actual delegates!

Yep, always thought that was a bit of a shame myself. @Bytemaster would it possible to let standby delegates publish feeds as well? Even if they did so only once per day it would at least let them show the world that they are ready and setup for publishing feeds, would help in standby delegate selection.

Riverhead has helped me set up price feeds, once elected my delegate will start publishing price feeds straight away.  I will make sure it stays that way.

I think on top of voting out non publishing delegates we need to actively vote in delegates who have committed to publishing feeds. Could we maybe vote in one or two new delegates collectively every few days. We could even have a thread for trial delegate of the day or week or something like that. If they don't publish feeds we can vote them out after a few days, and if they do a good job, we keep them. It would allow us to try to address the issue without waiting for the ability of standby delegates to publish.

I have set-up bitsuperlab/operation_tools btsfeeds on my delegate but would like to publish more feeds using your script.
Where is the best place to ask you a few questions?

Thanks

Use the 'ALL' parameter to publish all the available feeds, if that's the question you were gonna ask :)

Nearly ;)

Do I use a cron job?
and
Does config.py need to be configured just to publish feeds?

Wallet needa to be unlocked ..
no need for config.py
run it in a cronjob every 5miniutes or ao
Force publish time can be set in config.json

The script keeps running, doesn't it? So wont cronning it result in multiple clone processes?

This. If you want lots of delegates, then the process has to be made trivial.

I looked at setting up a delegate a while back and gave up. It's not clear the client can run in parallel to the QT and it was taking too much time to check over scripts in an effort to add bitGBP and others to them. Also, I wonder about the amount of variety in the feeds. If everyone is opting for the couple of scripts that exist and not fixing those to represent their own thoughts, then what's the point?

Off topic, I also wonder about the stability of a network resting on only 101 delegates - it's unclear if the intention is that number grows later.

Delegates should be able to publish feeds without being in the top 101 in the next version:  https://github.com/BitShares/bitshares/issues/1117

To publish feed, do we need to pay fees?

Yes, each publish is a transaction.

yup, but you can lower fee rate from 0.5 to 0.1 if you want
