As long as you have a backup of your wallet (at least a copy of the 'wallets' folder in %appdata%\roaming\BitShares) you're funds are safe ..

As for the login problem, try the following:
1) upgrade to the newest version (released today) 0.8.*
2) locate and execute the executable bitshares_client (terminal client)
3) let the console client sync with the network
4) type "quit" to stop the terminal client when synced (you can check that by "blockchain_is_synced")
5) retry with the GUI version

I have no backup of my portfolio.

Points 1, 2, and 3 all good.
Point 4 do not understand. Where I write "quit" and when?
5. What point is the GUI version?
The BitShares version 0.4.27.2?
The BitShares version 0.5.1?
Thank You.

If you run core 'bitshares_client' console client,
use this command
Code: [Select]
blockchain_is_synced

If you get 'true' response, your blockchain is synchronized with the network

Again, in the console type in "stop" or as suggested above "quite"
Code: [Select]
stop
This would stop your core client. Then proceed as described above.

The most recent GUI version is 0.8.1
You can get it from here https://github.com/BitShares/bitshares/releases/tag/bts%2F0.8.1

You need to download BitShares-v0.8.1.exe file.

I have installed the version v0.8.1.
I run bitshares_client and I get this.

Not starting RPC server, use -server to enable the RPC interface

Great, you are halfway there. Type after '>>>'
Code: [Select]
get_info

You will see the state of your client.

Type in the commands mentioned in the previous posts.

You can learn new commands with 'help', for example:
Code: [Select]
help wallet_open

You can see all available with
Code: [Select]
help

In the passphrase field text will not show up but it is being accepted by the program when you hit enter. This is for security.

unlock takes 2 arguments .. the first one is the timeout in seconds after which the wallet will be relocked automatically ..

as for the password, Riverhead is right.. it's a 'blind' input field. Just type your passphrase and hit enter ..
Recently I experienced that it might take some time for the wallet to unlock if you have alot of accounts in it

depends on your keyboard... you can figure out how to type it when you see
>>>
and remove it again .. the keyboard might contain 'dead-keys' in the sense that you have to hit [space] after the correct key combination ..
you can also copy&paste the pass phrase (if you are on linux you can use the middle-mouse button to paste)

When i'm unable to login via the main GUI screen, which seems to be happening rather frequently in v0.8 (after entering the password, i get the grey "3 dots" cycling ad infinitum alpha-blended overlay, and nothing ever happens);  i then go to the Accounts -> Go to My Accounts option from the menu (in OSX, shift-command-A), and enter the password in that plain popup text dialog box, which then grants me access to the client.   ymmv.

Seems there is a log-memory-leak that fills up the hard drive until it's full and the client crashes .. As a result there might be an inconsistent state of databases ..

the devs are working to fix it ..

I've observed this myself. I forgot about this. Users with this problem can try the above and see if they have any luck.

It seems that a few other people, myself included, have been having this issue. Windows 8, 64 bit, I'm still running v0.8.1, I'll update if 0.9.0 works for me!

test 2
<wallet closed> >>> wallet_open default
<wallet closed> >>> unlock
timeout: (here I am writing my passwore, but I can not write º)

My password is º
I do not write º

type this please:
(wallet closed)  >>> wallet_open default
wait until you see:

OK
default (locked)  >>>

then create outside your client a new empty document (right click your mouse somewhere on your desktop and create new document)
then type on your new open empty document this:

unlock 99999999 "yourpassword"
don't forget to write your password inside the strings ( " " )

then use your mouse to select it, right click and copy it...
then go back to your client and paste it there (right click & paste, or press Ctrl V, or Ctrl Shift V)
you should see:

default (locked)  >>> unlock 99999999 "yourpassword"

press Enter...

PS if this not works my guess is that your problem is related with the special character you are using:   º
My found is:"Many fonts improperly display Alt 166 as ª rather than .......... , and Alt 167 as º rather than .........."

So the client is not paste properly this special character and you must change the "set character encoding" to something else first...
right click on your client > show Menubar go on the menu "Terminal" > "set character encoding" and change it until you fin the encoding that supports this special character !!!
I hav no more time right now ... I will try to find the final solution this evening   ;)

something weird!
I have the gui version 0.8.0 installed (linux mint)
and today was the first time I couldn't login to my wallet using my password !!!

nothing happens after clicking the button unlock... even not a error/warning message as a result!
And second after I tried to export the wallet, it crashed/disappeared exactly after I selected a backup name and clicked the button save....    :-[

PS going to "Go to my accounts" didn't helped either.

Hello,
I am writing

I see

10001 level_map_open_failure: level_map open failures
Failure opening database: C: / Users / ... ..
Status: Corruption: error in middle of record
       {"Db2: C: / Users / .......", "Msg": "Corruption: error in middle of record"}
Etc ...

How is it done? "Set character encoding"

Just for your information it solved by itself after a couple of hours... obviously it was working on the background... just type your password and wait until it login and start normally...

I was able to log back in after:

1. Deleting my .json wallet files (after backing up in multiple spots) in the APPDATA bitshares directory.
2. Importing the most recent backup file.
3. It took a few tries, but it worked the last time for me.

If you use windows you can start the terminal version of the client which is also installed .. it's called 'bitshares_client.exe'
you will see a terminal popup that will directly connect to the network and start syncing ..

once you see a ">>>" .. type
open default
to open your wallet
after that type
unlock 9999999
press return and enter your passphrase ...

the wallet will certainly give you some hint about what is happending ..

my guess:
 - the client is replaying the blockchain for it's internal datastructure
 - the client is upgrading your wallet
 - something else 8)

What is the problem?
A corrupted database entry .. no idea the reason

Quote
What is the sulucion?
you can import from a backup.
Backups are located in the config folder (http://wiki.bitshares.org/index.php/BitShares/Config) .. in the subfolder "wallets/.backups/" (note the dot!).
1) Make a plain copy of the "default" folder in "wallets"
2) Pick the oldest backup from ".backups/default"
3) open the GUI and select "import from backup" from the main menu
4) load the backup and enter the passphrase
5) click ok when a warning arises for "overwriting an existing wallet" (if you have made a copy in step 1) )
6) finish

Hi,

I do not understand step 1.

I have Windows.

initiation
     Run ...
           -Appdata
                 -BitShares
                        -Wallets
                              .backups
                                     default
                               default
                               default-backup-

What is the "default" folder?
What is a simple copy?
Where I have to do the simple copy?

                               default-backup-

What is the "default" folder?
What is a simple copy?
Where I have to do the simple copy?

The "default" folder in the "wallets" folder
In theorey you can use any number of different wallets .. but the default one is called "default". The subfolder "default" in the "bl.backups" folder contains the backups for the default wallet (obviously). From there you can pick the most recent file to import into the GUI client.

Alternatively to copying the default folder prior to import (step 1)
.. you can also just rename the folder something else .. i.e. def-backup.
It just to be extra sure until you have recover ALL your funds ..

I open the program BitShares (GUI).

¿Import Wallet is equal to "import from backup"?

I do not know where this "import from backup"
