Title: tried to upgrade from 4.23.1 to 9.2
Post by: fussyhands on September 25, 2015, 01:03:45 pm
After many months of not using BitShares I'm trying to upgrade...

After upgrading to 9.2, the new software seemed to recognize my wallet fine and began syncing blocks with the message "Sever network problems | Last block was synced ...".  It got to 92% synced and then completely stalled out, and hasn't made any progress since.  Since it stalled, it has sometimes given a message that less than 60% of delegates are active (but its not saying that right now).

I would like to get completely up-to-date before the switch over to 2.0, but so far the process has been plagued with issues.  Please advise what I should try next.  Thanks!

I would recommend to close the GUI and start "bitshares_client.exe" instead for syncing ..
it is a CLI wallet and you can get info about the syncing process by typing "info" once you see ">>>". The relevant field is called something like "last_block_head" ..

OK.  I'll try that.  In the meantime I got a message that 'Bitshares has stopped working' when closing the GUI.  :-(

Considering that it has not made any progress whatsoever since I posted that, I don't think waiting till it is synced is going to do it.

Any other suggestions?

All looks fine with the info output .. juat wait for the client to sync .. it may try different nodes

Once syned .. you can "open wallet" .. the "unlock 999999999" .. and wait to some more so the wallet scans for your transactions ... "history" will show your transactions

Really, everything is fine even though it doesn't make progress for hours?

And every time I exit the program (GUI of command line), I get a message that the program has stopped working.  That isn't an indication of a problem?

I'm leaving it running for now to test your theory, but I am doubtful.  How long should I wait before concluding that it is not working?

yes thats exactly how it behaves on windows.
if you want to exit properly type "quit" and wait 5 minutes.

i personally close it with task manager because i dont have any patience. :P

The following works for me when client fails to sync or loses sync.

keep in mind-> NEVER delete the wallet folder

stop the client by typeing "stop"
wait for it to stop.
Press Start button.
type %appdata%
hit ENTER
open BitShares folder
delete peers.leveldb folder
delete these 3 .json files ( checkpoints.json, config.json, node_config.json )
restart the CLI bitshares_client.exe

CLI should now start and sync, check status with "info"

If the above doesn't work you may also delete the chain folder as well as the others mentioned above and try again.  This however requires you to download the entire chain again and takes a long time.  So hopefully you won't have to delete the chain

Of course NEVER delete the wallet folder.

I'm not sure if this is true but when I try to synch and my wi-fi has not a good signal, most of the time I have zero progress too, sometimes I get stack with good signal too but eventually the wallet will synch. Restarting the wallet or following Xeldal instructions ussually helps in my case.

I don't see where any one else mentioned that above... but thanks for the suggestion.  I'll try that next...

And, if it is a problem, how do I fix it?

Thanks!

This would be an alternative approach for download the block chain .. called chain servers:
http://wiki.bitshares.org/index.php/BitShares/Chain-Server

if you want, you can try this ip:port
  176.9.234.166:13750

OK, I'm trying the linux command line client and it seems to be loading.  Don't know if it will inexplicably fail at 92% like the windows client did... but I guess I'll find out.

If I want to move my wallet with from the windows client to the linux client is it as simple as copying the "wallets" folder?

Thanks for your help,
Zac

not sure .. but to export a backup of your wallet, you don't need to fully sync.

Also, the cli wallet does not 'open' your wallet files neither does it direclty as for your passphrase ..
hence you can first sync the blockchain and then open your wallet and scan for new transactions ..
