It already is its own chain but it is based on bitshares 1.0

No clue if they will upgrade to 2.0 or make any progress on the 1.0 chain.

Its correct.  They've been on their own for a long time now.

I would not expect them to stay with bts1.0 tech.  They already qualify for graphene use.  No reason not to upgrade.
