On the origins of Viktor Frankl's quote Fuzzy mentioned:  "If we have our own why in life, we shall get along with almost any how.  Man does not strive for pleasure; only the Englishman does." - Nietzsche, Twilight of the Idols (That part about the Englishman is a jab at Utilitarianism)

On conference trips: We should have people who can travel to conferences, doesn't need to be a maximum value code developer. If Cryptonomex or anyone else here gets an invite to an event, just say yes and then ask anyone in the community to go; if the community thinks it's worth it we'll do a worker proposal or just donations. Most times the actual cost of travel and accommodation is covered, so it's only about the preparation costs and the time lost at the event.

On whoever the man is: The man is whoever is getting pitch-forked by the rabble!  :P
