Title: OPEC OIL Price Feed
Post by: hcf27 on February 05, 2016, 06:00:22 pm
Hello,

I see that the Oil "Smartcoin" has no feed provided due to the difficulty of finding a free oil price feed. Well, this is true for WTI Crude Oil and also for ICE Brent Oil, however I found a daily price feed for OIL that may work for a OPEC OIL smartcoin:

https://www.quandl.com/api/v3/datasets/OPEC/ORB.json?auth_token=cbxyQU-PDEH9BHf8RXR-

You can get that feed for free on quandl.com, I know myself as much as many others would like to trade oil if there was a proper price feed that works.

Can the Committe get a smartcoin with this feed or do they need and hourly feed?

Thanks!

I've also looked at quandl as a feed source but I think a daily feed is much too slow.
The blockchain must react quickly to price changes, and commodities are sometimes quite volatile.

Worker proposal to pay for a service that provides a feed. OR since witnesses get paid and feeds are their responsability, they should all donate a bit of their pay to a fund that will be used to pay for a service that can provide a feed.

In addition to reward system, bitshares should have a penalty system for lazy witnesses. Witnesses should provide feeds for all smartAssets. This is what they are paid for. Otherwise, there was no sense to create these assets.

the penalty is being voted out I guess but in this case no one is going for oil so you can't kick all witnesses

Would it be possible to fetch certain websites that provide almost live data?

For my own excel sheet I`ve just linked to https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/views/all/ and it updates my excel data at will for all cryptos.
Same is possible with bloomberg, investing.com, godmode-trader etc. etc. it just needs to be prepared and parsed.

Sources are unlimited we just need a script or tool to parse the data from certain websites and extract what we need four the feeds.

?

Technically this is quite simple.

However, these websites typically disallow just that, and they also disallow re-publishing the data. Witnesses could get into trouble if they did that.

Please correct me, but witnesses do not have to publish source of their price information? Witness also do not have to just re-publish data. It can calculate an average from few sources, and than publish this as own feed. Am I right?

I would support either of these proposals
