Title: BitShares now Live on Microsoft Azure Blockchain as a Service (BaaS)
Post by: Fox on March 09, 2016, 11:47:13 pm
The BitShares on Ubuntu 15.10 template for Microsoft Azure Blockchain as a Service (BaaS) is now live:
https://github.com/Azure/azure-quickstart-templates/tree/master/bitshares-ubuntu-vm

You may search for BitShares at the Azure Quickstart Templates site:
https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/templates/

README.md:
# BitShares Blockchain Node on Ubuntu VM

This template delivers the BitShares network to your VM in about 15 mintues (PPA install).  Everything you need to get started using the BitShares blockchain from the command line is included.
You may select to build from source or install from the community provided Personal Package Archive (PPA).  Once installed, the 'witnes_node' will begin syncing the public blockchain.
You may then connect via SSH to the VM and launch the 'cli-wallet' to interface with the blockchain.

# What is BitShares?

```
BitShares is an industrial-grade financial blockchain smart contracts platform.  Built using the latest in
industry research, BitShares delivers a decentralized financial platform with speeds approaching NASDAQ.
```

# Template Parameters

When you click the Deploy to Azure icon above, you need to specify the following template parameters:

* `adminUsername`: This is the account for connecting to your BitShares host.
* `adminPassword`: This is your password for the host.  Azure requires passwords to have One upper case, one lower case, a special character, and a number.
* `dnsLabelPrefix`: This is used as both the VM name and DNS name of your public IP address.  Please ensure an unique name.
* `installMethod`: This tells Azure how to install the software bits.  The default is using the community provided PPA.  You may choose to install from source, but be advised this method takes substantially longer to complete.
* `vmSize`: This is the size of the VM to use.  Recommendations: Use the A series for PPA installs, and D series for installations from source.  Notice: Once the blockchain is synced, resize your VM to A1, as the BitShares witness_node requires a small resource footprint.

# Getting Started Tutorial

* Click the `Deploy to Azure` icon above
* Complete the template parameters, choose your resource group, accept the terms and click Create
* Wait about 15 minutes for the VM to spin up and install the bits
* Connect to the VM via SSH using the DNS name assigned to your Public IP
* Launch the cli-wallet: `sudo /usr/bin/cli_wallet --wallet-file=/usr/local/bitshares-2/programs/cli-wallet/wallet.json`
* Assign a secure password `>set_password use_a_secure_password_but_check_your_shoulder_as_it_will_be_displayed_on_screen`
* `ctrl-d` will save the wallet and exit the client
* View your wallet: `nano /usr/local/bitshares-2/programs/cli-wallet/wallet.json`
* Learn more: [http://docs.bitshares.eu](http://docs.bitshares.eu)

Yes, this is the same platform as those mentioned above.  I am not sure why the search would not return the proper results.  I've tried "Eth" or "Bit" to return many Etherum releases and both BitShares and BitCore at this URL:

Because Factom is probably not really in yet.

See https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/azure-baas-update-2

" The following are in the pipeline:

    Deploy a factomd service exposing the Factom APIs - Q1 2016
    Bitcoin data service of prices from different exchanges recorded on Factom's Blockchain - Q1 2016"

Keywords are "pipeline" and "Q1 2016".  Q1 is not over yet.

It was going to take some pretty mainstream media conglomerate to vouch for the validity of DPOS/pegged assets, both concepts which still seemed like witchcraft until someone "trustworthy" as Bill Gates signs off on the math.

Bravo my friend.

Yes, 15 minutes if you select to install from the PPA (longer if you build from source of course). The only requirement is an Azure subscription. Pricing varies by the region you choose to deploy the template to.

The general idea of the BaaS is that when some company is looking to build a blockchain they can shop through Azure and spin one up.

As far as the crypto-traders are concerns though.. another reason to buy on the hype and sell on the news.

The Azure BaaS platform allows anyone to spin up a node and CLI wallet with the minimum of effort. When Plasma is released, I will add this to a template to enable the toolkit resources for developers.

Thanks Data,

So will Microsoft have any affiliation with BTS?  or is this kind of like the Craig's List of blockchain business's?  Are they trying to promote business's building on top of one of the blockchain's within the Azure offering?

Microsoft has no more association with any of these blockchains than Linux has with any host provider.

Microsofts motivation in promoting this is largely due to their entire business strategy of going back to the 80s and focusing in their cloud offering at all costs. Blockchain is edgey and hot as a buzz word for innovation.. its good for them. It's working too.. they keep getting themselves out there like they are the go to place for launching blockchain whatever now.

In cryptoland though.. stories of associations are often overstated if not misleading. There is a reason all the PRs only ever show up on places like Coindesk and never in Bloomberg. :) The association has been conflated and doesn't denote anything more than being included in a repo that adheres to their template environment.

I might sound like I am dumping on this but I'm not. It is another pathway for adoption, and a good one.

I think though most people who are following this news only view the potential market cap growth out of it and don't really understand what happened. Microsoft was heard and everyone gets stary eyed. :)

I'm glad Fox managed to get the template in their repo. Now he gets to have real fun... maintenance! :) I am hoping we can help out with that in the future.

 +5% to Fox!

So dumb question... What advantages does Azure give to bitshares other than being associated with the Microsoft name?  Is Azure BaaS a market place?  Can people develop for BTS through Azure?

The general idea of the BaaS is that when some company is looking to build a blockchain they can shop through Azure and spin one up.

As far as the crypto-traders are concerns though.. another reason to buy on the hype and sell on the news.

You're obviously free to advise BTS holders & all the outsiders and potential new BTS users and investors viewing this positive announcement thread to sell BTS right now, though I think that's probably best put in the price speculation thread instead.

As far as other DACs like Factom & Emercoin go they've since managed to retain a large amount of the additional value that was initially attributable to their addition on Azure. This adds utility, name recognition & greater confidence to a brand, one thing BTS in particular has been lacking. (Positive brand associations and integrations are something BTS has been much criticised for in the past,  so some real & retainable brand value has been created here especially if we capitalise and build on the opportunity.)

It also opens up BTS to a much wider technology savvy audience. The Azure Twitter feed alone, where it may be announced if the addition is added to a Marley blog post has 400k+ followers of people interested in new technology. So while yes we'll likely see an overshoot 4-8 days after it's announced on there. I believe Fox's efforts may have added real tangible value which BTS can build on.

Only a month ago you believed it was worth a lot of time and money being spent on this...

If I don't see any movement on this in the coming month I promise you we will head this up and be the lead to ensure that we can be available on the Azure BaaS.

At present we are tied up with other things atm and this would require a great deal of attention money and time to execute.

I think it will be worth the effort though.

Again excellent work and THANK YOU Fox for your efforts

they pump after this ANN is amazing, but i think this will be more helpful in the long run.

i think our goal should be to lower the entry to new developers as low as possible.

only xerocs is writing documentation, but this should be prio also for the core devs. If you ask me, we should have short videos and papers
how our codebases works and can be used and forked.

great work again fox  8)

Awesome!  I’ll include in the latest update.

Above is the reply I received to my email containing the BitShares blurb the community crafted in the original thread.  It was received about 8 hours ago (while I slept).  He does not indicate "when" the update will occur however.

Is there a preconfigured Linux release that one could use to spin up a node?  that would be cool.

Yes, that is exactly what the Azure BaaS templates are intended to accomplish.  Currently BitShares on BaaS is running on Ubuntu 15.10 based on the initial template.  Future updates will likely include builds on other OS platforms.

I have yet to get to this.  It is my next priority.  Please watch for a separate thread shortly where I will solicit feedback on how best to accomplish this.

What about having the same but for Google Cloud Platfrom? It's one more platform, gives us more reach. Also the rest is only in Azure while we would be in two platforms.

https://cloud.google.com/

Can't everything just be reused?

I will look into both Google and Amazon offerings.  If they have template-based deployment solutions similar to Azure, I should expect it will be relatively easy to adapt them.  I expect the Bash script to remain nearly unchanged.

Fox, I like your quote from the article:
 “Future innovation will likely come in a side-chain style project, first with Ethereum then Bitcoin. I don't see the current linear blockchain like we have today lasting beyond 5 years.”

Relationships & synergies with other cryptos/companies will bring in VC money and price appreciation.  I think as a community we're starting to see hard evidence of it.  Well done, Fox.

I meant to ask, is there a preconfigured Linux release available for download for people who do not wish to lease a server from the Azure Marketplace?

im having trouble spinning one up...
The template deployment 'Microsoft.Template' is not valid according to the validation procedure. The tracking id is '_____________'. See inner errors for details. Please see http://aka.ms/arm-deploy for usage details.

does anyone know what this might mean?

Odd. The template is unchanged since launch. I will look at it in the near future. Currently in meetings.
