Title: Users reporting errors creating accounts on OpenLedger
Post by: BitShares News on March 11, 2016, 09:20:38 pm
"Failed unknown error" message being reported when attempting to create an account via our referral link (https://goo.gl/Gc2qPf) on OpenLedger. Are there some issues or any idea why this message is appearing?

@ccedk I always forget to use the mention.

Have them check the faucet url under settings and make sure it's set to https and not http

Thanks for the tip puppies! What's below is not for you but for the Dev team.

@bytemaster so how would a new user know to do this and how long has it been like this and why is this set like this? Who knows how many referrals have been lost because of this, seriously who knows? Is there any way to find out? I receive very few donations for my efforts in the BitShares ecosystem and am relying on referrals from my work for "pay" from the people who bootstrapped the blog and got me started. I've seen very few referral income for some time now, is this why?

It seems to be completely defeating referrers by giving new users errors with no message telling them how to fix it, but why is it like this in the first place is the big question I have? We have all of this momentum and new users are getting nothing but errors with an unknown reason? This is not presenting a good message right off the bat and is probably driving many new users away from BitShares for good. I wouldn't go back and try a crypto that gave me an unknown error when trying to create an account and I definitely would not put any money on their chain out of fear I'd lose all of my money.

I'm truly devastated to learn this and am really deflated by this revelation because I put most of my extra time away from my job into marketing BitShares and now I have no way of knowing if this is the reason it's not paying off and I'm not responsible for it, someone else is and they've let this go on for how long now without fixing it or at the least putting a message up showing how to fix it on the OpenLedger website.

I'm feeling kind of stabbed in the back here sorry but this really hurts and I feel like I've wasted a lot of my time for nothing in return.  :-\

The first I heard of it was 2 days ago https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php/topic,21761.0.html It seems to be an intermittent issue, and I think SVK has already fixed the code, so the fix should be in the next version of the wallet.

Also I have had one user not able to register with Firefox. I know it's not a supported browser but if someone has an issue registering it's something to check.

I still have no idea how this can happen, since the code only contains a link with "https", but I've just pushed a commit that forces https you're on a https domain like https://bitshares.openledger.info.

What is the update? @svk

If any new user is trying to create account now, will they be able to do so without the error, or do they need to have a link.

I only see this thread now, but have sent e-mails to both bm and xeroc for help as many users have lost out on this issue and lots of japanese have faced problems like this, and I wish really to help them all to have ongoing pleasant unser experience.

Yesterday I tried to show OpenLedger to a friend of mine and unfortunately he wasn't able to register. Also when I checked the market pairs the tables for bids and asks weren't showing, only something related to settlement. I wanted the tables to appear so he would see the entire layout.

I was really disappointed honestly, he was the person who introduced me to crypto and he only got interested in BitShares later because I've always explained him what was going on and giving updates.

Yesterday when I finally had the chance to show him OpenLedger, the situation above happened and got me really disappointed. I was saying hoe he should see 2.0, how better and smooth it is than the previous version and then that happened.

This experienced has surely happened to many other users, specially during this surge in price. During the exact time we can't afford to make mistakes like this.

Like our fellow chinese members say: it's a shame. I got frustrated.

that's entirely unacceptable. i've also been touting Bitshares as the best blockchain out there with lightening speeds and an awesome p2p exchange, but lightening speeds for the backbone mean little to a new user who can't get through the UI.

there are some OL bugs being fixed this weekend, but improving the UI and overall network speed/efficiency should be a never ending, very well funded project.

well, i've been complaining for a while now about the trading experience being buggy. sometimes it gets so slow that i give up on placing new orders; the danger, however, for me, is that sometimes the market moves so fast that i'm stuck with outdated / horribly priced open orders, but the interface is so buggy that i can't even cancel them without sitting there re-clicking the same button for a half hour. i have a strong vested interest in seeing Bitshares successful, but for new users experimenting, i can see this being a deal breaker.

The fix svk pushed should work.
Since this is a serious issue, @ccedk I think it's best to contact bm or @valzav to update OL's online wallet asap (if not did already).

Why can't I see the orderbooks or why are they hidden somewhere I cant find?
Network latency issue?

I can confirm their is a problem with OL.
tried to register receiver1 on OL -> failed unknown error (tried 2 times)
in the same browser session on bitshares.org/wallet -> no problem

You're in the new view-only mode? Without registered an account?

Yes, I believe buy, sell orders and market history should still be shown to everyone.

Sad issue.
"could you take a look at your local settings in the wallet and verify that you have `https` in the faucet url?
If not, please add an "s" and retry!"

looks like the new version still isn't uploaded.  You can fix it pretty easily though.  In the upper right hand corner there is an option "gear looking icon" just to the left of the help button.  Click that gear.  You will see a line called faucet address and you will see http://bitshares.openledger.info listed there.  Change that line to https://bitshares.openledger.info and you should be able to create an account.  You just need to change the http:// to https://

If that doesn't work then let me know and we will try to figure out what is going on.

Even though I had created an account about a week ago, when I checked through accounts today, my account name wasn't there. So I created the same account again today using Firefox, no problem and now I can see the overview page, which I was looking for for quite some time. So it seems the problem has been sorted out.

Thanks dude.  I am glad it is working out for you.  I can't dev, (outside of writing really simple python scripts) and I work too much at my day job to be too much of a help with much of anything else.  I am glad that my efforts are proving valuable for the community.  This type of feedback motivates me to continue providing this service and to see which other services I am capable of providing.

very cool, i wish i had your skillz with doing something like that. my contribution is on the trading side for now, keep our markets alive. what you're doing is immensely helpful to me and i'm sure others who have regular issues with the other API connections.
