Title: [Worker Proposal] Advertisement at 8btc
Post by: bitcrab on February 11, 2017, 04:22:40 pm
recently China goverment took some actions to restrict/regulate the service provided by cryptoexchanges such as OKcoin, huobi, BTCC, yunbi etc., now it's a good time to promote DEX service in China, I plan to do advertisement at 8btc, the most popular website for blockchain and cryptocurrency in China, below is the details:

an advertise picture that link to https://bitshares.org/wallet/#/dashboard (https://bitshares.org/wallet/#/dashboard) will be put to the up right side of the homepage of 8btc.com (http://8btc.com) or www.8btc.com (http://www.8btc.com), as below:(http://p1.bqimg.com/523014/52013ec81e19a064.png)

several advertisement pictures will share the place, and one occupy at least 25% of the time.

8btc charge 2BTC/month for this kind of advertisement,I will put in the advertisement for 1 month, which need 2BTC, I will offer 1BTC, and I create this worker to collect the left fund.

the worker will last 1month, totally 252000 BTS, daily pay 8400 BTS.

the advertisement will be online in one week.

your support is appreciated!

I am in favor of giving this a try.  But I agree with @fav that the results should be measured (both by click throughs from the ad, and by new accounts created under a specific referrer).

Also very important, both in general and to maximize the success of this effort (and the efficiency of the funds spent), the wallet needs a suitable page for new visitors to land on.  The current default page is the account creation page (see 1st image below), which I've been saying is a very unsuitable page for new visitors to land.  Perhaps this is why you are proposing to have people land on the dashboard page.  But this page is also not suitable since it has no information (see 2nd image below).

Because I believe it is imperative to have a suitable landing page for new visitors (for this ad campaign AND in general), I took the time to create one (see 3rd image below).  I proposed it last week to @Chris420, who liked the idea and encouraged me to ask @svk to incorporate it into the wallet site.  I discussed it with @svk and understand it's currently in progress.  @bitcrab, I hope you will write some similar text in Chinese, or translate the text I wrote so there's a proper landing page in place before spending money on an ad.

This worker has my full support and I wish we had many other marketing worker proposals like this one! well done @bitcrab and thank you for your generosity.

Does anyone has access to advertise bts on London tune or NY adverts for example? How much does it cost to place a small advert on tube trains for a month?
We need to start using the pool funds for marketing like this. There is no other way. No ads..No success..

how are you measuring success? what metrics can you catch?

@fav seriously man? The guy offers to cover half of the cost with his own funds, he asks for 252,000 bts for 1 month and you ask about metrics? Come on now... :o :o ::) ::)

I agree with your proposal, @svk might want to hear about it.

I think the question is legit from a proxy knowing that we have a strong anti-dilution community and that we wasted some funding in the past.
The answer might help this worker to get more votes

just because someone offers half of something does not mean it's actually worth a dime.

@tbone that's an awesome idea! brings us closer to a real landing page!

Well I think it is worth much more than a dime. Especially now with the situation to the Chinese exchanges And actually I think that 252,000 bts for 1 month ad is not a lot. How much does it worth to have ads in coinmarketcap.com ? does anyone know? Can we consider this as well?
And if you want to compare metrics consider that 5 days of svk's worker or 3 days of xeroc's worker is 250k bts (no offence to these workers- I also support both of these) so for 3-5 days of devs work I consider 1 month advertising to popular sites more than fair..

It doesn't matter if we have the best working product out there if no one knows about it...Let's put Ads everywhere please..

I think ,the worker may be do more works:
(1)a new faucet
(2)who click the AD ,will receive JINBI in dex.bitshares. You  should to write a opensource program.
Why need the program?Because ,bitshares worker's purpose is  offering open code.

hi @tbone your advice is great, I will provide the Chinese text soon.
I have even one more idea, when the new user click the page, can the server get the info of the users' area and change the language setting accordingly and automatically? if yes it will help many new users from China a lot. @svk

I can help you set one up.

I just found that if a new user create an account at the official web wallet https://bitshares.org/wallet/#/ (https://bitshares.org/wallet/#/), both the register and the referrer are openledger.

I do not run my own faucet now, so if I set up one, it's possible to let the new user select faucet, in other words referrer,  while creating new account  at the official web wallet?

and what is needed to run a faucet? a LTM account with enough BTS and also a server?

If you want i can help you on the faucet side of things .. i could give you a specific faucet url that gives all the referral reward to you foe some time or even help you set your own faucet up.
however .. having your own faucet requires that you also have your own wallet deployed because the faucet api is hard coded in the gui

I believe IP Geolocation requires an API service, which I'm not sure how many free ones exist.  If we can add a free one, great.  But even if we do, there's no guarantee it will work every time.  And even when it does work, there will be times when the user's actual language does not match their location.

For these reasons, we really should put the language selector right in the header, so it's highly accessible from anywhere in the wallet.  And I would use country flag icons next to each language in the list.  That way it's obvious that it's a language setting, even when the user is unable to recognize the currently selected language.

By the way, in addition to improving the initial UX for users who don't speak the default language, there's good marketing value to show very prominently that the wallet supports 8 languages.

it's better to detect the default language from browser setting
and I agree the language select should be in the top menu.
Code: [Select]
  1129     var defaultLang = navigator.language;
  1130     if(!defaultLang)
  1131         defaultLang = navigator.browserLanguage;

Really? judging from your answer you must be a marketing eight ball. how do you know this is worth something? what ads/graphics are used? how is success measured?

I am NOT in favor of spending money on banner ads that I have trained my eyes to ignore.
Even the modal ads that popup in my face and dim out the rest of the screen... my eyes immediately seek to the corner looking for the X to close it.

@bitcrab - have you considered paid placement instead? where the "ad" is mixed in with a very interesting, educational article by a Writer that people follow? "in your face" ads are very annoying imo, and if you want to advertise, make it educational to entice interest, and hence clicks. you will get a much better roi. people yearn for these little tidbits of knowledge.

@tbone - I really like your proposed default / DEX "Homepage". this dex homepage should be live before @bitcrab posts that ad and links it to the web wallet though.

on a side note, I think it would be great to have a reactjs "ticker tape" right underneath of the main menu. spice it up a bit. i bet @svk could do that in two shakes of a lamb's tail if we ask him real nice-like......  :-*

I kind of like the idea of the ticker tape.  But it's not for everyone (some people think scrolling text on a webpage feels very 90s).  So there should be an option to turn it off.  Either way, though, I hope we can get that default / DEX "homepage" in place, as well as the language selector on the header first.

@svk, any thoughts about when that homepage can go up?  Also, can you put the language selector on the header so it's always highly available?  That would be fantastic.

the banner ad is already online:

as current time is good to promote a decentralized exchange, I can not wait to put it on.

the pic is not very satisfactory, however it is accepted and include enough infomations, if I can get a better one in recent future I'll replace the current one.

@kenCode  I do not think such a banner ad in 8btc.com is very annoying, as 1.vistors can just ignore it. 2.a visitor to 8bts.com is possiblly interested in DEX.

@tbone @alt @svk I agree that we should have a welcome page or just make the dashboard page a welcome page, with detecting languate from browser setting and put languate setting at the top.

I also draft some Chinese text for putting in the Chinese welcome page, hope that can help:

I don't think it exact to say low to no fees, as assets like OPEN.BTC, OPEN.ETH also charge 0.2% market fees.

Yes, you are right but it is banner. We need something that grabs attantion.

I dont suggest that we should lay about fees. Maybe something more apropriate, I am sure there is better fraze
for "little to no fees" in mandarine.
The massage should be plain simple, right in the point of interest. Nothing more and nothing less.

I think we SERIOUSLY need a better way to deal with API server issues.  If a new user/visitor is browsing the wallet and then is suddenly presented with an API server settings screen, that is embarrassing, damaging and it's an unacceptable user experience.

How about having the wallet automatically switch to a different API server if it detects high latency?  That should be the default setting, but users should also have the option to lock in on 1 or more API servers of their choice.

I am not in favor of using dilution.

However, for those who are in favor of dilution but do not understand what the elephant in the room looks like, i would just put out some basic information in case you don't :

1. 8BTC.com is like the Chinese version of Coindesk.  Not some small time blogger or some general video website that has too much information unrelated to crypto. And it's not some guy's car which travels across the US and makes videos . Just imagine how BitShares was never once on Coindesk's head space when millions of USD were available and afterward tons of dilutions were assigned to "marketing delegates" and marketeers.
2. After the AD were put up one day, there are dozens of new comers jointed the BitShares QQ group in China. Some of them may not want to use the DEX but simply buy BTS as a investment. If you ask me, it does not hurt to have exposure on a coindesk comparison.
3. The top Chinese exchanges also made ADS on the same spot,  which demonstrated the spot's value in some way.
4. This AD may proved worthless, but "bitshares" will be seen besides Huobi or other big boys. At least money would be wasted on some well known channels rather than the hood of someone's car (i had to stress the car hood thing, LOL)

Same ideas as the Electrum BTC wallet. Makes sense to use latency or other criteria to switch automatically, but not sure is OpenLedger and BlockTrades etc would like that.

These newcomers mostly asking how to buy BTC in DEX  :D
I realized that there should be more publicity materials and channels, so I made a trading flow chart (quoted below), posted it in bitsharestalk.org and pushed it to 3456 subscribers of HelloBTS WeChat subscription (http://mp.weixin.qq.com/s?__biz=MzAxNTIwNTEwMQ==&mid=2650184715&idx=1&sn=f9e0b5529eecf0220398fb9914c034ad&chksm=8385ab89b4f2229f391cf7044f0693a41fb6677d1819b099ccc2894911b2cd92c98d38006c82&mpshare=1&scene=23&srcid=0215MBQyWepEE36ocGCUx2Vt#rd) and WeChat Group.

The Chinese government requires BTC trading platform to perform anti-money laundering and KYC policy, most of China's trading platform, suspended withdrawal BTC business, this is a rare opportunity for RMB traders get into BitShares DEX buying and selling BTC , I made a simple transaction process diagram, hopes to brings some new user for  OPEN.BTC: bitCNY market.

Newcomers are just come here for buying and selling BTC with CNY, we need an easy way for trading BTC in DEX first. If they fall in love with DEX, I'll explain and teach them to short bitassets like bitCNY, bitUSD, bitBTC, bitGOLD, bitSILVER, ... :D

And about the trading fee of OPEN.BTC, the cheaper the transaction costs, the more users will trade. I really hope OpenLedger @CCEDK_ChM  will consider to reduce the trading fee, then it will attract more traders and market makers (mm bots).

Thanks for Chinese government, this is a great opportunity to expand the OPEN.BTC market.

In our mobile wallets, and BlockPay, I setup what I call "node hopping". Right now I just have it set at 5 seconds, so if the wallet keeps disconnecting or cannot connect at all to one of the public nodes, then it "hops" to the next one in line, ie:
https://github.com/kenCode-de/bitshares-wallet/blob/master/public_nodes.json

In the future, I would love to have it so that the node order is based on the user's geographical region too so that the closest node to them will be at the top of the list.

Since that's the only metric we can use in this case, spoiler: account creations do no skyrocket.

@Yao  excellent man! I knew that this was a good ides despite what my friend @fav thinks.. Make sure that you explain them that they can also short bitassets such as bitbtc.. :)

Too early to say so. Let's wait for a month and see if this add has any impact.

@Yao Looks super nice! Would you translate what is written on red "buttons"? I'm just curious.

RED buttons:
As you knows, almost all of China's trading platform is limited to BTC withdrawals now.

This picture tells Chinese BitCoin traders, they can buying and selling BTC with CNY without any restrictions in the BitShares DEX, the DEX is a P2P platform, there is no centralized entity, sell orders and buy orders are matched on blockchain.

@bitcrab, can you please summarize what you found out from this advertising campaign?

Do you consider it a successful effort?

Did you track new accounts or increased trades you can definitively tie to the ad?

What metrics did you use to measure how effective your proposal was?

although I have set the ad link to https://bitshares.org/wallet/?r=bitcrab&source=8btc#/ (https://bitshares.org/wallet/?r=bitcrab&source=8btc#/), I am not skilled enough to trace how much clicks are brought by the ad, and my referral numbers has no obvious increasing.

the pic of the ad has been changed several times and the last version is as shown below, we put a QQ group number inside:

before the ad, I remember there are about 1400 members in the QQ group, now the number is 1764.

many of the new members come because of the ad, surely not all,  recently the price surge of almost all the altcoins brought many new players.

I do not have exact metric to measure the effectiveness of the ad, simply speaking, it brought many new comers but do not brought a very high increasing of user numbers. to me the effectiveness is acceptable but not inspiring.

You can't measure the success of ad campaigns easily.
Theres alot of subconscious brand recognition etc
correlation isn't  always causation either.
Bitcrab paid 50% of this ad campaign himself anyway.
I wouldn't say it wasn't a waste. I'm glad I supported this ad campaign with my proxy vote.

...it brought many new comers...

Thanks for sharing what you do know. Surely you have a reason for your conclusion "the effectiveness is acceptable", but is that based on your "gut feeling" or hard cold numbers? From what you presented I would say a mixture at best. It's not an efficient way to conduct an experiment or gain knowledge about your audience or marketing.

When you suggested the idea I was all for it. I was also glad you offered to subsidize the effort by contributing half the cost out of your own personal funds. It was a small investment, a reasonable expense for a trial experiment.

I'll say this, that any marketing venture I get behind and vote for will have to explain how its' effectiveness will be measured. Without that you're just throwing money at a problem and "hoping" it will do some good. It's not a very scientific way to conduct research or run an experiment.

I applaud the initiative and your willingness to use your own funds for it (showing you have "skin in the game" to insure that it works), however I must also say I'm disappointed you didn't have a better plan for measuring the campaign's success.

Live and learn. An example of a good idea that had a flawed implementation. Next time let's apply what was learned from this.

some one pushed an on the most famous Chinese crypto news website, showing to potential investors who are not on this tiny forum that there are some people are still running/promoting BitShares.

i'd say that signal alone is worth more than any scientific metric can measure.

Who is to say that there is not a whale who didn't knew bitshares before saw the AD and decided to buy a couple million BTS to feel it ?

of course, if u must think that only registering account is helpful to the eco-system, be my guest. those tiny income from account usage is not paying for the witness and worker dilution, investor money is.

of course, bitcrab's intention may just want to gain more wallet users to use the DEX. From that perspective, this is not good performance .

but wasted ? come on, exposing bitshares logo on all the crypto players in China, u call that waste ? do u know how much it cost for exposing bitshares logo on some dude's cars' hood ?
