I can't remember the password to my wallet. I have the private key and the json file. I see a lot of people saying something about a .bin file. I recall making one when migrating from Bitsion 1.0 to 2.0. I hope there is a way to recover my wallet. If not, just say so and I'll let it go. I'm willing to pay BTS for assistance. I first got started in BTS 5 years ago.

If you really have the private key (WIF format) you should be OK. But it will take some work to recover everything.
The .json file requires the wallet password to use, so if you have forgotten that it is no help to you.

I'm using the bitshares 2.0 program. Do I do a restore wallet?

Can you give more information about the private key you have? Don't write the private key here of course, but explain more about it. Did you get it from BitShares 0.x or from BitShares 2.0? What were the steps you took to get it?
I ask because in BitShares keys are generate for all kinds of operations and it's important to know if you have what you need.

I think I have good news. I entered a password into my btshares 2.0 client. The program appeared to have started up but it was blank mentioning no account information. After I did that, I clicked the blue button add account. I inserted m I inserted my username? I do recognize the picture image that goes along with my username. But my client is saying it is not connected to the internet. I know am I connected to the internet since I'm writing this post but I'm not sure what to do next. I'm happy I made it this far ^_^
To answer your question I got my private before Bitshares 2.0 was launched.

Are you using the web wallet or do you have a client installed on your computer?

I have a client installed on my computer. When I right click internet connection icon on the bottom right of the client. It gives me an option to click reload. Do I click that in order for me to resync with the blockchain?

Update: when I put my mouse on the "severe network problems" it says this:
Delegate participation rate is below 60% please consider to postpone all transfers until the rate is back to 100%.
I'm somewhat familiar with what a Delegate is. But overall I don't know what this means.

Yes, the network is up and running fine. You might need to update your client.
I don't have too much experience with the desktop client, but you might want to make sure you have the most recent version.

Perhaps the nodes hardcoded in your version for connecting to the network have changed if you have an older version?

WIll signing into the web client help bring my account up to speed or is it safer to do it on the installed version?

It's complicated. And it depends on your situation.
It sounds like you have remembered your password which means you should be able to use the json file you have and import it into the web-wallet to restore your account.
You can try that.
But don't delete the desktop client you have now!

Ok I was able to export my wallet and receive a json file. Do I go to https://bitshares.openledger.info to import my wallet or do I go to a different website?

Is there a way to change your password from the installed software of Bitshares?

Strange...I can sign into my Bitshares 2.0. Export my wallet and everything but the same password I use for the software does not work when I tried on browser client. Am I missing something here?

Yes, you will have to make a new account for the web-wallet. Use this link to access the web wallet:

Openledger works I think but it might be something different now.
Once you have made a new account you go to settings which is in a menu at the upper right, next to your user name.
In settings you can select import keys and import your json file there. At that point you will be asked for your password and you insert the password for your desktop client where you exported the keys.
If everything is successful you will have your old account restored in the webwallet. You will have two accounts in the wallet. The one you created to access the webwallet, and the one you restored from your desktop client

I just checked and the proper place to do the import under settings is "Restore/Import"
But there doesn't seem to be the option to import a .json file from a BitShares 2.0 Client. Are you sure you have a .json file?
Under the same settings menu there is the option "Backup" and this gives you the .bin file which you were wondering about. Do you have a .bin file backup from your desktop client? Is the interface of the desktop client similar to that of the web wallet? If so, you can make a .bin backup there. Or if you already have one, you can import this into the web wallet.

alternatively, since you already did the migration from 1.0 to 2.0 at some point, you might be able to simply enter your private key under Restore/Import.
This should work if you only had one account and you have the private key for that account. If you had multiple accounts in your 2.0 desktop wallet I don't think it will work. Or in other words, you would only get one account back.

Here's the Update:
I created a wallet model. I attempted to restore my old wallet with the json file but I got this error message. "please use a BTS 1.0 wallet_export_keys file instead" I'm not sure what to make of this. So I decided to use the private key. I submitted my key and all that happened was a message appearing saying "Found Key".
My balance still says 0. Not entirely sure if I did everything right.

Under settings/wallet. Drop down list (if you have more than one wallet). It's good to make custom names for backups (wallets) - you will be lost very soon with "bts_default" naming scheme. If private key is from 2.0 it should work for you - I've tested some time ago. Can't help you with earlier version, because I had no idea about bitshares before, but if I had old key I would try to paste it somewhere under permision tab as owner key maybe. One I know older keys were not associated with accounts, so you need account first, then you can import the key,

@nmywn when I try to import my private key. All is says is key found. Not sure if I did the right steps.

I see my original username for bitshares is no longer registered. Does that mean I lost everything?

If key found, then maybe you must claim your balance. (options).
Is "original username for bitshares" is newly created wallet? Just go into options/wallet and set other wallet active.
I"m afraid i don't understand fully what you're doing.
