Title: Share amount

I can't decide.
Write-ins *might* be considered

I vote 5m because even though it shouldn't change anything from an economic point of view, actually people are confused and have anchor biais which will made them think the less shares there are the more they are valuable.

Generally, people really seem to enjoy big numbers.  :P  I'd go with 50,000,000.  This is going to be TaPOS, so what we're really talking about is the initial supply, which is also the constant multiplier for balance display, right?  In displayBalance = (absoluteBalance / totalSupply) * virtualSupply?

The number 50 is unlucky, especially in Asian culture and gambling circles. I vote for any number besides one that starts with a 5 or 50.

I agree with @currencydebt.

It may sound silly, but numerical superstitions are prolific in Chinese culture, and I'm sure everyone agrees it probably would not be wise to accidentally exclude large portions of the Chinese....

The choice of 38,888,888 or 888,888,888 would be attention-grabbing. Look at how much virtual ink has been spilled debating the relevance of 21 million bitcoins.

Also, the observations above about numbers in Chinese culture should not be ignored.

death-sickness-zero-zero-zero-zero-zero-zero would be bad marketing.

Yes I agree, these things seem silly, but 88 888 888 is a great idea.

The bigger the number the better it would seem. (I would even add another 8. For some reason having a 100 000 of something makes the average Western person feel much richer than having 10 of something even if their value is the same.)

Having a lucky Chinese number is also a fantastic idea. It also sends the right message, that you're thinking about and respecting the Chinese market as a big part of the future.

Because 88 888 888 is too complicated when read in chinese ,but 8 888 888 is simpler , sounds better and will be more popular.

That sounds  like " ba bai ba shi ba wan ba qian ba bai ba shi ba"  , and I believe people will like to simply read as 8 880 000"  that means "ba bai ba shi ba wan" in daily use case.

Yes! The Google translation for 88,888,888 sounds fantastic - good enough to be a ringtone.
Seriously though, perhaps eight eights would be best.

I don't get the eights. More is better.  Let the BitShares move up in value from 0 to 1 relative to bit used rather than beating it 5 to 1, or let it beat BitUSD by a ton like bitcoin.  400 billion BitShares pls

Ok,
If you make 8,890,000 initial shares, then for a while the supply will be
8,88X,XXX    where X is more likely to be 9

this is hilarious, I fully endorse any amount this conversation converges on

I love the idea of setting the currency supply to some lucky numbers.  That's a better reason than some arbitrary "round number".

But remember that our plan is to display currencies in micro-percent (MIP?**) so people can easily see their increase when a DAC pay's dividends.

** I realize that "micro" is usually a Greek "u" and  "m" stands for "milli" , but did you ever try to pronounce uIPs?  Maybe they could be pronounced "mikes"

So whether you pick 888 or 8888888888888888 or 4,000,000 as the underlying share supply it would be nice to get everybody to start thinking in "MIPs".

That means if you start with 40,000 XTS you would have 1 percent of the BitSharesX supply of 4,000,000.
That means you would have 1,000,000 micro-percent (MIP).  So 40 XTS would be 1000 MIP and 4 XTS would be 100 MIP and 1 XTS is 25 MIP.

That way, transactions instantly destroy a tiny amount of the supply and everybody's displayed account balance in MIPs adjusts instantly upwards every block.

After people get used to this, no one will be interested in any other unit of measure - the instantly understandable unit of value will always be the MIP, no matter which DAC you are talking about.

Yep! m% and u% should be standard. I'm wondering whether it should be made explicit enough that people could actually trade in terms of specific-block-m%, which would let people earn their dividends "right away" instead of having to wait for the market to move to adjust

This would be ideal if it's workable. I guarantee that people are not going to understand that burning shares is equivalent to paying dividends, and the reason is that when you burn a share, everybody else's purchasing power doesn't immediately increase.

For this reason, I'm generally opposed to burning-as-dividends, but if we could make it so that at the GUI-level, transactions are denominated in terms of percentages, that would be spectacular. Basically, there'd be this underlying "supply" that would be invisible to anyone who doesn't care about it; the actual currency units that people see and use would be all defined in terms of percent of supply.

I agree with @currencydebt.

It may sound silly, but numerical superstitions are prolific in Chinese culture, and I'm sure everyone agrees it probably would not be wise to accidentally exclude large portions of the Chinese....

The four best choices:

7,000,000
8,000,000

38,000,000
49,000,000

I disagree. The number 4 is inauspicious in Chinese, but 5 is ok (I checked with a close friend who is native Chinese). 50,000,000 seems about right.

Not a big fan of 8,888,888. Why bend over backwards to cater to the Chinese segment? Bitshares DNS should be a global enterprise. Choosing a # that is lucky in Chinese seems like trying too hard to be cute and could backfire... just my 2 bits.

I agree, having lived in that region. There are no problems with 5; that poster was mistaken. The number 4 is unlucky in much of East Asia because the Chinese character for 4 sounds the same as the one for death. 7 is a very lucky number in much of the world and, in other places, so is 8. But I think the crazy eights 88888888... looks idiotic. If you're going to use 8, then make it a nice round 800,000 or 8,000,000, etc.
