Title: rebranding update
Post by: toast on April 02, 2014, 05:03:30 pm

BitShares DNS is the name of the namespace DAC family, and *maybe* the name of a a possible proto-DAC for this family. If there is a proto-dac then new DACs can use burn rounds (among other options) for snapshots, if there is no proto-DAC then new chains will do burn rounds / snapshots from previous chains or PTS/AGS or both.

What used to be called "BitShares DNS" is now simply called ".p2p" - that is the name of both the blockchain and the TLD, with ".P2P" as a ticker. This will not be heavily branded with BitShares but rather will set an example of how a project can benefit from participating in the bitshares ecosystem.

I'm a little torn. I think it would probably be really helpful to the bitshares ecosystem for 3rd-party products to come along that honor PTS/AGS, but I think it's going to be difficult to convince people that P2P is actually 3rd-party when its lead dev is a hero member at bitsharestalk.org.

The other thing is that you'll probably get a huge marketing boost by explicitly labeling p2p as a bitshares product.

So my equivocal suggestion is to explicitly use the bitshares name in everything. Like I've said before, Bitshares products should all show up next to one another in alphabetized lists. :) It should be unambiguous that bitshares products are not shitcoins.

I agree.  The whole reason we promoted BitShares to be an industry brand, not our company brand is to call attention to that industry.
Imagine when the first ten entries at coinmarketcap start with Bitshares!

Note also that we are contributing bitshares.org to the industry.  We are actively purging all Invictus specific references and moving our logo to just one of the icons on the industry members list.  So you don't have to drop your membership in the BitShares family just to declare independence from Invictus.  We have already declared everybody to be independent.

Note that our new Team page is not a page of Invictus employees but a growing number of industry heroes from many companies!  http://107.170.30.182/team/ (http://107.170.30.182/team/)  Note that there are no titles, just industry roles.

That said, you should think about different kinds of brands.  What brand will you use to reach out to your DACs customers (.p2p) vs what brand will you use to reach out to investors in your DAC's stock? (powered by BitShares DNS) and how do you want your DAC to appear on the exchanges?  Do you want to instantly communicate that you are a profitable DAC in a specific industry with tons of support, or do you want your ticker symbol to merge into a sea of other newbies trying to get noticed?

You can have your cake and eat it too!

Choose one brand for your customers (Lucky Robot Casino) and another for your ticker symbol (BitShares LRC).

That said, we recognize that there are many different strategies people can choose and some may benefit from totally independent branding.

Ultimately, your DAC will be competing with its own clones.  Which of you chose the branding strategy that led to being Number One in your sector?

Each team gets to choose its own path to success.  Use the brands when they make sense.

Your first point is what I was really getting at. There is no reason the customers (people buying domains) need to understand how DACs work any more than they need to understand traditional DNS to get a .com domain. I'd love to just market ".p2p + okTurtles" to the masses.

As for recognizability on an exchange, we can't get around having hierarchal names. BTS/DNS/P2P. There is no way around it, *shares is not scalable.

Totally agree that every DAC has to customize its face to attract its unique set of customers and that doesn't need any recognition of the underlying technology.

Except.

The one thing we haven't figured out yet is how to get every consumer to recognize the value of dealing with unmanned vs manned companies.

Whether I'm a music lover or a gamer or a day trader or a retiree looking for a safe return, why do I want to take my business to an unmanned company?

There needs to be an overarching non-technical brand, like "Intel inside" or "Coca Cola" that unites a whole lot of different products with a common blessing of consumer trust.

What do unmanned businesses have going for them universally?

So what brand would give confidence to both a gambler and a grandmother?   A lovable robot with a transparent heart of gold?

When we find a way to communicate "why unmanned" we will go mainstream.

Until then, why would a consumer even care?

How do we communicate to the consumer that they want to eat only organic vegetables?

Manned = corrupt

Unmanned /= corrupt

The sell is basically that DACs don't allow humans to f*ck everything up.

Not sure how to get that into consumer-friendly packaging.

Brian?

Someone just needs to create a fork and let the market decide if it wants .p2p
Or BitsharesDNS.  Im putting my money on the Bitshares brand.

Hmmmm, not so sure about that. If you are marketing an alternative DNS system and the key differentiator is that it's a DAC then how do you get around explaining how DAC's work and what their value proposition is? If I'm trying to get someone to accept .p2p over .com there has to be a good reason for going with the less recognizable domain name. But in any event, why can't the two things co-exist? Bitshares DNS is the DAC's name and it's brand, .p2p is simply one (I assume there will be others) of the top level domains available to website registrants.

There are multiple DNS DACs."DNS" might make sense as a name for the proto dac. But then you have to explain how to refer to .p2p blockchain specifically among other DNS dacs.

In my head its just "BTS/DNS/P2P" and "BTS/DNS family"

Can we rename Bitshares DNS into Nameshares?

Nameshares just sounds better. Just like Namecoin/Bitcoin. Since it really has little to do with Bitshares itself, Nameshares just is simple enough to catch on.

I have thought about this in depth and concluded that the cost of pissing off all the namecoiners is totally worth it

Nameshares is good, but how do we associate it with BitShares, which would strengthen all BitShares DACs and industry

Also nameshare benefits from an (obvious) association with bitshares

I am starting to see a pattern:
Why not skip to the end:

BitShares Lookup/Bitshares Map/BitShares Dictionary: A family of companies providing decentralized (key, value) mapping services (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Associative_array)

Family Members:
And so on... Thoughts on this kind of generalization? Edit: I suppose the difference is subtle but at least in my head mapping keys to values seems to be more general than mapping names.

I am starting to see a pattern:
  • DomainShares: A single company providing a decentralized domain name mapping service
  • BitShares Domains/BitShares DNS: A family of companies providing decentralized domain name mapping services
  • NameShares: A family of companies providing decentralized name mapping services
Why not skip to the end:

BitShares Lookup/Bitshares Map/BitShares Dictionary: A family of companies providing decentralized (key, value) mapping services (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Associative_array)

Family Members:
  • BTS/MAP/P2P: Map domain names (with .p2p TLD) to IP addresses, SSL keys, etc. (similar to Namecoin's d/ prefix)
  • BTS/MAP/KEY: Map personal names to PGP public keys, Keyhotee IDs, etc. (similar to Namecoin's id/ prefix)
  • BTS/MAP/DAC: Map exchange ticker symbols to particular blockchains, etc.
And so on... Thoughts on this kind of generalization? Edit: I suppose the difference is subtle but at least in my head mapping keys to values seems to be more general than mapping names.

Actually I guess Namecoin exactly bills itself as a "decentralized key/value registration and transfer system" (see: http://namecoin.info/). This Name metaphor is throwing me off though, as keys can be more than just names.

I was thinking more like:

BitShares DNS: Decentralized Namespace Services

DNS/P2P
DNS/KEY
DNS/DAC

"Nameshares" are shares of DNS DACs, and can also be used in place of the more verbose "bitshares DNS". More specific than "bitshares" but less specific than "P2Pshares".

This solution has the problem that traditional DNS means domains only while our DNS is all namespaces - I think this tradeoff is ok because it makes all our other stuff fit together so much more cleanly

Hmm I think I might like this. In what contexts do you see NameShares (or is it Nameshares) being used vs. BitShares DNS?

What do people think about the overloading of the DNS acronym?
