Title: Re: [meta] Favorite Bounty Suggestions (150 PTS budget!)
Post by: CLains on May 15, 2014, 01:38:44 pm
The budget is now 150 PTS! Let us try to put the money to good use.

Edited in light of Toasts comment

First, I am thinking we should brush up on the content and find visual artists to help render the concepts and the vision of the front-end experience intelligible. A related point is to get clear on the stages of development that are required to reach that vision; everyone will feel more comfortable with a clear list (graphic) of goals to be reached in the next few months.

Second, all crypto-communities are on a cool-down now and not much is happening, so there is little activity on all crypto forums and difficult to attract people to complete bounties. One way to make peace with this silence is to focus inward on our own community; another way to exploit the cool-down is to forge connections between us and the nodes that are currently active in other crypto communities, as they are likely the "hard core" of those communities, and they now have energy to make friends and deal with external requests in their free time.

So if I understood correctly you suggest to split the bounties between:
- projects that convey the message in a clear and preferably graphical way
- getting the word out to all the right vocal people in other communities

And in both of these to concentrate on bitsharesX.

Does it make sense to also try and target areas other than the current crypto-watering holes or is it too early for that?

Don't know if it is too much work, but besides putting up bounties would it also be possible to list some things that need doing even if they don't have bounties attached. If the bitshares projects get a little more traction I'd consider that a very nice bounty already.

And last but not least (don't know if I mentioned this before) conversing via the forums might be a tad slow and cumbersome, maybe organizing a realtime video/voice-chat thinktank session might speed things up a bit. It would only require a pre-announced time, date and maybe set of topics and a public accessible channel. I'm no expert, but the mumble-server listed on this forums seems to work reliably every time I tried it. Google hangouts does have more features, but to me also seems to be more prone to glitches, lag and bad audio.

In light of Toasts comment, I retract exclusive focus on bitsharesX.

Aside from vaguely defined "stunt" bounties as bait that can catch high-influence people and websites, I think it makes sense to focus our bounties on the communities that have already been attracted to the crypto-space, and to the second gen platforms in particular, and even the people in this very community who I think may have more to offer than we realize.

Don't know if it is too much work, but besides putting up bounties would it also be possible to list some things that need doing even if they don't have bounties attached. If the bitshares projects get a little more traction I'd consider that a very nice bounty already.

Yes, I think this is a very good idea. On thinking about how to allocate resources for bounties, I realize that a lot of what is happening on the forums is done out of goodwill and a sense of helping the community grow. I think incentivizing these things is its own science, with the +5% being the only technology we have. So far I think that showing appreciation, highlighting individuals and their contributions, and committing their act to memory is important for these kinds of things to happen more frequently.

And last but not least (don't know if I mentioned this before) conversing via the forums might be a tad slow and cumbersome, maybe organizing a realtime video/voice-chat thinktank session might speed things up a bit. Yes, we should do this sometime. We can set up a thread and create a new http://pad.xeroc.org/ for reference. I will be very busy tomorrow though, Norway Independence Day. ;)

Now I am done with 17. mai (http://media.snl.no/system/images/15171/standard_17.jpg) and Tusenfryd (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:SpinSpider.JPG). Fun!

To business: these are the current suggested bounties, http://pad.xeroc.org/p/Community_Bounties (feel free to add more!)

From these I would prioritize the following:

1. I think allowing people to establish reputation is important (bytemaster insight), and I think monthly awards (e.g. 3 awards a 10 PTS, most helpful, most inspirational, most creative, most innovative, most constructive critic, ..) might be an okay way to do it. And it might be good to give these 3 people a mention or small spot (e.g. 50-100 words) in the monthly newsletter as well.

2. We should update our visual explanations of the snapshot with more accurate timings. And we should also have a bounty for visual rendition of the front-end future of the Bitshares Ecosystem. But for this we need input from the I3 team in written language what the future might look like.

3. The best route to meme-creation is via a reddit-tip bot, so we should have a bounty for the creation of a reddit-tip bot; but in light of the conversion of Bitshares-PTS to DPOS, it might be better to put that idea on hold.

4. The second best route to meme-creation might be to simply award users in a thread on this forum and get the facebook, reddit, and bitcointalk channels to advertise it. (Toast did not like the meme creation idea because it is awkward to judge, do people agree with this?)

5. A unique service bounty for diverse tasks that are impossible to predict. This will require case-by-case judgement, but it should be seen as a thank-you gift.

I think something like 30 PTS for awards (giving thanks), 10 PTS for updated visual of snapshot (visual explanation, roadmap), 20 PTS for imagining the front-end of the bitshares ecosystem (visual hype), 20 PTS for meme-creation thread (visual fun). 30 PTS set aside for unique service bounty (allowing for retrospective tipping).

With this list I have not yet gotten to bounties for written content or editing, and I have not included bounties for bridging the 2nd gen crypto communities. Given 150 PTS, the above suggestions exhausts 110 of 150 PTS, so there wouls be 40 PTS left. So what do you guys say?

Imagine that we only have 150 PTS the next month to spend, as a community, what would you prioritize differently from my list? What would you include on the list that I did not? What would you remove from my list?

Any thoughts towards micro-bounties (sub 1 PTS) for Tweets, Reddit posts, and general social media outreach, etc.?

Perhaps we could submit links of posts to you via PM and you can pay out using your judgement; or utilize some sort of simple consensus voting system with delegates.

Edit: Didn't find this: https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=4514.0 (https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=4514.0) until after I posted.

Perhaps we could do two Unique Bounty threads, one for sub 1 PTS, and one for 1-10 PTS?

It is important to me that everything is public, and it is done such that each person reports/links what they have done. Then people can also evaluate my judgement of each contribution, and let me know if I am giving out too much, in which case i'll lower it for the next contribution, etc.

I am going for a cyberpunk, if-it-works-it-is-good-enough-strategy here. We are pattern recognition creatures, and besides a small list of approximate rewards we will hopefully get to the point where people intuitively understand what kind of reward one gets for what kinds of things.

xeroc suggested we issue bounties for articles that fit in the newsletter. I think this is a very good idea, as it will work as a great testing ground for the ability of the community to write articles.

30 PTS for awards to the community (3 a 10 PTS awards, giving thanks),
10 PTS for updated visual of snapshot (visual explanation, roadmap),
20 PTS for imagining the front-end of the bitshares ecosystem (visual hype),
20 PTS for meme-creation thread (visual fun).
20 PTS set aside for unique service mirco-bounty 0.1-1 PTS (retrospective tipping).
20 PTS set aside for unique service bounty 1-10 PTS (retrospective tipping).
30 PTS for written content contributed to the monthly newsletter (community-writing training ground)

That would be all of the 150 PTS (monthly budget). What do you guys think?
What is essential? What can be cut? Should we spend it all in one go, or save some for better suggestions to come along?

It is my birthday today, so I do not dwell on this for too long now!  :)

Ok, so I just went ahead dictatorially and posted a few bounties as the meta-talking could continue for ever and my new motto is better is good enough.

With these bounties in place, I will exhaust

30 PTS community awards.
20 PTS unique service bounty
20 PTS unique service micro-bounty
15 PTS meme creation competition

That 85 PTS of the 150 PTS budget I got from Brian (might be a monthly budget if the bounties work in any capacity). I appreciate any input as to how to spend the remaining 65 PTS for this month. Take a look at  and insist on the things you favor.

My own thoughts have been to spend money on a 1. reddit tipping bot, 2. visual infographics of plans and concepts..

The reason I have not gone ahead and created bounties for these is that,
1) I dont know anything about how to implement a tipping bot, so I cannot judge what it is worth or if it is something i3 should handle.
2) For the visual infographics i am note sure the contents of i3 plans are clear, and not sure what concepts that are easily explained such that a visual artist can handle it, and I am not sure whether someone behind the scenes at i3 is already doing these things.

I also have some thoughts concerning writing competitions, but I am not sure what we should focus on; for now people can at least get a moderate reward through the unique service bounty if they write something impressive. (http://pad.xeroc.org/p/Community_Bountiesthe list[/url)

#2 is an awesome idea and I would be willing to give guidance to anyone working on it. I'd say it's worth all 65 remaining PTS. We need beautiful infographics to explain the snapshot process, TITAN, and DPOS. Here's some sketchy inspiration: http://dotp2p.io/visualize.php

(Don't do a reddit tip bot, those things are so annoying)

Ok, let us focus on infographics. What can we do in a bounty for now or tomorrow?

The sketch is great but not even Stan seems to know the timing of these snapshots, so either we do an abstract one where we can fill in the correct dates and times, or we exclusively focus on infographics explaining DPOS and TITAN until we have the times and dates figured out.

As you explained, TITAN is just stealth addresses with address registration, so we can simply point a visual artist to the billions of explanations of stealth addresses and explain address registration in a few lines. How do we easily explain DPOS to a visual artist?

Actually, we need the extremely short and neat explanations of TITAN and DPOS anyhow, so how about we do a bounty for them asap, and then an infographic simultaneously, so the artists who know can start and those who dont can check the other bounty to figure out how it works.

Say, 10 PTS to explain TITAN in less than 200 words, 10 PTS to explain DPOS in less than 200 words, and 20 for infographic of TITAN and 20 for infographic of DPOS, and an extra 5 for the combined infographic. We can do it competition style like I did with the meme creation thread, to alleviate any particular person from making a judgement. Not sure if it works though, but maybe worth a try, what say you.

IMO snapshots are equally important and it doesn't matter that we don't know the snapshot dates. Future snapshots can be left undetermined until they are announced.

DPOS needs a compare/contract list feature-by-feature, comparing it to mining pools and NXT-style transparent forging. This would be easiest to get started on.

TITAN is the simplest, I don't think we need to go into the nitty-gritty as much as just explain "your account is public but your transactions are private and not linked to it".

Can you fix your pad link? I will start writing some drafts.
