Couple of things to make your life easier:
1) The two links in the upper left by your Avatar for unread posts since your last visit and unread replies to threads you've posted in is a great way to see what's new
2) In your profile settings set it so that newest posts appear first. This puts the newest post on page 1 at the top and the first post on page x on the bottom. Then you only need to scroll to your last read point.
3) You can filter out the forums you will never read in your profile setup.

I just have this link as a button on my browser bar. Tasks me straight to the list of new posts across the entire forum.
