General Discussion / Web Summit 2016
« on: September 23, 2015, 04:27:45 pm »
Would Cryptonomex, Peertracks or any other team have any chance of attending it? It's the biggest start ups event. Would you be interested in going? Do you think anyone from the team could earn a spot there?

It would be held in Lisbon, Portugal. Would love you to come here, would have the chance to possibly meet someone after all this time. Also, we seem to have a growing start up culture here but we have nothing crypto related, only a company who does Btc ATMs.

All the big ones go there, would be an awesome opportunity.

I think you would have to apply for Alpha and try to get in, otherwise it seems too expensive. I'm basing on this year's prices in Dublin and also sales seem to end in 2 days so prices may be higher because of that.

General Discussion / UBS and Smart Bonds
« on: September 14, 2015, 06:28:08 pm »
http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/ubs-reveals-its-interest-sidechains-well-ethereum-1519706

"So just like with internet we are a strong believer that we need to have, if not one, but a few platforms that are multi-asset, rather than a chain per variant of particular instrument.

"But there are some things about Ethereum like lack of scheduling. For instance, there is no way for us on vanilla Ethereum to create schedule jobs.

"Our experiment with the smart bonds requires also payment of coupon and we have to create an external schedular to automate the coupon payment, which effectively stimulate the smart contract. Clearmatics have a scheduling capability.

"They are working in the right kind of multi-asset general purpose computing distributed solution like Ethereum with enhancements. Yery smart folks working with the technology we think is the right direction."

General Discussion / Private Chains and the Future of BitShares
« on: September 13, 2015, 06:35:29 pm »
Lately we've been hearing a lot about Private Blockchains and it seems it's the theme right now. Financial Institutions want to use blockchain technology it can save them time and money. It's the most logical thing to do. However, they don't want to abdicate their power and privacy. This can create some kind of a dilemma for some of us. The first blockchain ever made was designed to be public and fully transparent. Could someone like a Private Blockchain even be called a blockchain? Or is it something else? Well, I say we will have to manage both.

Well, how could we do this? At first, it's hard to imagine a world where everything is fragmented. If each company had their own blockchain that could be a mess. However, we only need a way for them to communicate. Ideally we should have the lowest level of the protocol to be public and transparent but also a way for businesses to develop their own private networks on top of it. The easiest way I came up with to explain this to everyone is: See BitShares as the Internet and Private Blockchains as Intranets.

Everyone can navigate through the Internet - Anyone can use BitShares
However you need permissions to access a specific Intranet - Permission Based (Private) Blockchains

I think that analogy would suffice. Another one is kinda like how computer networks work

Each layer has it's own protocols. Each layer uses the one beneath to work properly and provides a service for the one above. Each layer gets into something more specific until you reach the application layer. We could see this as some kind of Blockchain Privacy Layers. At the base you would get the BitShares chain, which everyone can use, but as you go higher, chains get more and more private (see difference between Intranet and Extranet).

This would mean we could support Financial Institutions who wanted their own private ledger. They would get to keep their privacy and power on their chain and we would have more volume, more transactions, more profitability. Just random stuff of the top of my head that could be used to monetize this:
  • stupid proof client where with one simple click you would create your own chain. by doing so you would also have to pay some kind of fee just like you do now for a UIA or become a delegate
  • part of the fees generated by that chain would then be used to buy and burn BTS,
  • tokens on that chain would need to be collaterized by BTS

This also seems to me that the future of BitShares would have a higher success rate if instead of targeting new DACs would target this Private Blockchains. At the end, every Institution using their own private chain would be using BitShares. In my opinion, this would need to be the next step we should take if we want to grow.

The thing about DACs and not having a chain to rule them all is, if Financial Institutions want to use BitShares (more specifically the Graphene Toolkit), BitShares' stakeholders will gain nothing from this as these chains would be designed to be private, meaning there would be no sense at all in Sharedropping on BitShares. Zero incentives at all. All they want is the toolkit. This would bring us back to the same old conversation about CNX gaining from the toolkit which was originally supported by AGS owners but I don't want to get into that. This is merely my vision of the future and how both - BItShares' shareholders and CNX - could benefit from this. They would still require a licence to build a private chain network on top of BitShares. If this is possible I would suggest for BitShares to adopt this as a business model if it is aiming to grow big.
Note: This doesn't necessarily mean we would have one chain to rule them all. We would have multiple chains, but each would grow to a huge network with private chains. BitShares for Financial Institutions, Music Chain for Music, Video, Media and overall Entertainment Industry, etc

All of this, assuming this is feasible. I'm only assuming so based on MultiChain and other random stuff and projects I have read, which aim to build Privatised Chains on top of Bitcoin. For reference:
MultiChain is an open source distributed database for financial transactions. It builds on the technology that powers bitcoin to enable private blockchains with managed permissions. MultiChain is optimized to help financial institutions and service providers accelerate their exploration of blockchain technology.

https://blog.ethereum.org/2015/08/07/on-public-and-private-blockchains/
http://www.multichain.com/

tldr:

  • BitShares the layer-base of a big protocol
  • Private Chains on top of BitShares to increase profitability
  • BitShares shareholders and Financial Institutions who want privacy and power over their ledger, would both benefit.
  • This was a random thought so I don't even know if it's feasible or makes any sense at all in a blockchain technology context.

Technical Support / Scheduling Proof of Scalability
« on: September 07, 2015, 08:51:24 pm »
Ok so you can vote 23 times. Don't forget to vote for the day and the hours! This will get people multiple votes to see what days they're available. After this pool closes another one will be done to know exactly at which hours will be done, to get the most amount of users do the most amount of transactions at the same time. Vote only if you're testing transactions, this is to coordinate testers only Pick a day you think you can be most of the time online so it's easier to get the timing right.

Try to plan ahead so we have time to pick the hours and have time to do this correctly. Edit: Added possible hours at the pool. Capped at 6 P.M EST because it should be around 11pm at GMT and might be too late for some people.

Pool will close in 7 days.

Although I won't be able participate as at the moment I don't have the knowledge or time to earn it, I will contribute with BTS. Other members will do this as well.

Please mention the amount of BTS you're willing to donate.
For the testers, please state how will you use the BTS in case some don't know. We want everyone to be informed.
I won't hold/receive any BTS for this, it's still to be determined to whoever they will be donated or you can just send them at whoever you want to. I'm trying to get things rolling but since I won't be testing, don't send any to me.

Just to simplify things, fill up the template: (number two is for whoever is going to use donated funds from other users. number 3 is if you have any idea at all, don't even know if it's possible)

Code: [Select]
1. I'm contributing with the following amount of BTS:
2. I'm contributing with the following resources (for testers only):
3. I'm aiming to contribute following amount of transactions per second (for testers only):

Total Amount of BTS pledged:
- akado: 2,500
- bobmaloney: 2,500
-onceuponatime: 2,500
-liondani: 2,500
-tonyk: 2,500
-CLains: 2,500
-phillyguy: 2,500
-godzirra: 2,500
-DataSecurityNode: 2,500
-emailtooaj: 5,000
- kenCode: 2,500
-nethyb: 10,000
-puppies: 2,500
-clayop: 2,500
-betax: 2,500
-abit: 2,500
-chryspano: 2,500
_______________
Total: 52,500

Total amount of transactions per second aimed for:

amount of transactions aimed for might really not be the true value we get because people might be online at roughly different times but it's just so we have an estimation. I will edit the thread to update the values.

General Discussion / Suggested readings for trading?
« on: September 07, 2015, 08:07:21 pm »
I'm not a trader, I'm not doing this in order to try and be one, meaning I won't take it seriously but I'm kind of curious and would like to educate myself so that I can at least understand what others talk about when they use technical terms and analysis.

I don't even know if I'll have time for this, but anyway, I'm sure someone will appreciate it. Does someone recommend some kind of book, article, in particular? Does by any chance even exist something regarding trading that is more crypto related since I've seen people mention it's different from actual stocks, even though I don't know if this is true or not, but would appreciate if it did exist something.

Open to any suggestions.

Technical Support / We might finally have stuff like Authy 2FA on BitShares
« on: September 07, 2015, 12:33:46 am »
In the last hangout BM mentioned he is working on support for 2 factor authenticator providers. I'm sure someone already mentioned in the past, that Authy would be awesome, but the forum's search tool is just bad and I can't find it.

26:15
https://soundcloud.com/beyond-bitcoin-hangouts/beyond-bitcoin-hangout-9-04-2015-s3

"...So if you want to be a 2 factor authentication provider, we're will have a standardized protocol so the wallet can work with any number of 2 factor providers..."

"...there is nothing implemented with respect to 2 factor authentication although I did talk to a significant 2 factor provider and they're very interested in helping implementing an API that will work with what we want to do..."

I would ask you to share which provider it is but at this time it sounds too premature and kind of pointless so let's continue with the mystery. What matters is that we're going to have one more awesome feature.  8)

General Discussion / Get Qointum to join BitShares?
« on: September 06, 2015, 12:31:00 pm »
https://qointum.com/
https://wiki.qointum.com/design/dev/#queued-delegated-proof-of-stake
Some may know the project because it uses DPOS. It's trying to create a new web basically. However, it seems it's not gaining traction. No press releases and this crowdsale phase was extended to more 3 months.

Getting them to join up with us would be a win win right? We got ourselves another interesting project sharedropped and they get more exposure out there. Everyone benefits.

Edit: Qointum is owned by NewGamePlus Inc. however I can't find  any website with information about that company, only stuff I've found is
https://www.ic.gc.ca/app/scr/cc/CorporationsCanada/fdrlCrpDtls.html?corpId=8404046
http://www.datalog.co.uk/browse/detail.php/CompanyNumber/CA8404046/CompanyName/NewGamePlus+Inc.

Would have thought a company who is developing crypto stuff would at least have their website with info

Previous name of the company was Appvertising Mobile Inc, Daniel Carter was the only person there, again, no website or info

Technical Support / What differentiates Privatized BitAssets from Nubits?
« on: September 02, 2015, 08:46:33 am »
Will we have privatized bitAssets on 2.0?
Don't we trust someone else to maintain the peg? Is there any difference? If not, we might just taking an option that we really criticized in the past. Wouldn't we be better off partnering up with nubits them since they have more volume and liquidity?

Random Discussion / MORPHiS - The World Brain Awakening
« on: August 31, 2015, 09:57:19 pm »
Each time I see projects like these, I'm happier and happier of being able to presence all of this. Definitely worth checking it out!

https://morph.is/v0.8/
https://www.reddit.com/r/morphis/
Free open source peer-to-peer
high-performance distributed datastore.
The world's global filesystem.

I'm quite curious on the web of trust it aims to achieve.
Through a trust based system of reputation, this feature will enable reputation based searches (deprecating GOOGLE/BING/ETC, DNS, and so on), forums (bye bye disqus, etc!), and eventually deprecating democracy and stone age government (democracy via stone age paper ballots VS real time direct voting).

Also
Dead simple to run: Download, double click, and then your webbrowser automatically opens a new window viewing the root Morphis UI and you can already browse and upload to the next generation of the Internet - MORPHiS! There are 3 UIs: The most developed and supported is via your web browser, the next is via SSH client, and finally via the 'mcc' the command line morphis UI. You can upload and download with curl and wget as well! Fully scriptable already!

So, does anyone know this project? Has anyone used it before? What do you think about it?

NEXT STEPS IN MY PLANNED OUT VISION:
STREAM 1

Dmail (Dpush/TargetedBlock) Technology (COMPLETE)

  • Web Page Comment deprecation layer (Deprecate Disqus!).
Forum layer (Deprecate all forum software, also IRC).
    Rudimentary Search!

(This STREAM will implement things that would be better with WOT but are already possible to be better than the current WWW solutions just by using Dmail/Dpush Technology).

STREAM 2

Bitcoin Microtransaction and Mixing Layer (Add infinite cheap microtransactions to Bitcoin and anonymize it as well)!

Incentivization layer
  • TOR replacement layer (traditional anonymous proxy deprecation layer)
Distributed computation layer (ie, Alternative design to achieve what Ethereum hopes to do.)

STREAM 3

Trust layer (Web Of Trust)

Search (deprecating GOOGLE/BING/ETC, DNS, and so on).
WOT enhanced Forum layer.
  • Democracy deprecation layer.
    • CEO, manager, BOSS deprecation layer.
Stone age Government (democracy via stone age paper ballots VS real time direct voting) deprecation layer.
      The World Brain.
    • World Peace.

STREAM 4

Things that are already easily possible with current MORPHiS and are just application coding that anyone could do.

  • Deprecate Dropbox by implementing native rsync/sftp support. Think sshfs!
Deprecate ... (your ideas here! your help WANTED!)

Each tabbed line is dependent upon the less indented line immediately above it. All STREAMs will be and are able to be worked on concurrently. I will prioritize myself based upon feedback and requests. I would love for developers to join this project, and together we will seriously save the world! I'm not going anywhere, ever! This is my life until success or death; and I am young!

JOIN ME!

Technical Support / Integrate third party services on the wallet
« on: August 26, 2015, 06:42:58 pm »
Is this possible? For example, integrating a tab for 3rd Party services or whatever and have Metaexchange and Blocktrades there? That way people could get real Btc from within the wallet. Would be a great marketing and selling point.

Technical Support / Payments in real time
« on: August 25, 2015, 09:07:07 pm »
With high fees we can't possibly perform microtransactions, this has been addressed already. But we need bitassets to have liquidity and we are partnering up with new businesses.

Is there a way to solve this problem with microtransactions? We could have a large market waiting our there for real time payments, however we can't do that with high fees. Not to mention it would bring the needed liquidity to bitAssets. We could bring in new partners.

I remembered this when I saw https://faradam.com/
