I thought the first line was clear enough, I shorted BitUSD at one price, the price went up and then when I closed the short I ended up with more BTSX than I has started with. Which seems exactly backwards of what should have happened.

I think toast was encouraging you to go through rot your benefit, not his - what you're saying doesn't sound possible. What price went up? The price around 25, or the price around 0.04? I honestly apologize if that sounds like a dumb question, but it could explain why your numbers aren't what you'd expect.

I don't think getting real-time quotes for an ETF is easier than for indices themselves. S&P500, Dow, and Nasdaq can be looked up on Google, Yahoo, etc. Getting real-time VOO quotes requires a deal with NYSEARCA.

Easy way, at least initially, would be to peg a few of the larger index ETFs.

ie. If investors want exposure to the SP500 just peg VOO.

Why would you "look up" prices? Wouldn't you let a peg do its thing naturally?

Because currently that's how BTSX works - delegates publish price feeds that determine valid short prices.

Technical Support / Re: depositing assets

O I see

so:

a) PTS can't be moved to Bitshares wallet right?

b) any BitAsset can be move between wallets, that includes wallets on exchanges, right?

a) correct.

b) yes, you can send BitAssets to any account name. Be careful with trying to transfer directly from one exchange to another (sounds like that's what you meant?), because some exchanges need you to include a memo in your deposit transaction.

General Discussion / Re: Is Anyone Still Holding Bitcoin?
« on: September 10, 2014, 11:54:45 pm »
Question for the BitShares faithful: Is anyone still holding Bitcoin or other cryptos? Why? And if so, what percentage of your crypto assets are you holding outside of BitShares?

I sold all my junk coins for AGS and PTS. Since BTSX has come out, I realize that I've done what was once unthinkable: sold out (almost entirely) of Bitcoin. I just have nickels and dimes remaining in my BTC wallets at this point. So I would say that 99% of my crypto 'portfolio' is now in BTSX, a little BitUSD, and other BitShares commitments. Am I wrong to believe in this so strongly? I don't think so. Every dime I keep in Bitcoin is one dime that won't double, triple, or tentuple nearly as fast as it should in BitShares. Yes, there are risks, but as long as you are in crypto, risks are par for the course. The (very realistically possible) potential rewards here vastly exceed anything else.

I only got into the crypto game in November, and since around February I've held virtually no bitcoins. I've dabbled in others, notably XCP, NXT (currently my 2nd-biggest crypto, but far behind BTSX), and the occasional small alt that caught my eye.

I haven't found anybody in crypto that understands the level of paradigm-shift that it will take to move crypto assets to the next level. I like Nxt, but the fact that they think coinoUSD is even remotely comparable to bitUSD makes me severely doubt that they have the vision to succeed.

All this to say, I don't think you're crazy. :)

It's not quite clear to me how I deposit assets like PTS, BitUSD, etc. in the wallet.
there is only 1 adress and I think it's only for BTSX right?

Also, you had asked about PTS - BitsharesX and BitShares-PTS are different, and at the moment they don't have any inter-operability. You need a separate PTS wallet for that.

Where are you trying to deposit the assets from? An exchange? The exact way you'll do this varies slightly from exchange to exchange, but most of them require you to register a BTSX account, and then you can deposit any bitAssets directly to that account. If you need funds to pay the account registration fee, there is a thread here on the forum where people will send you enough BTSX to register.

Technical Support / 0.4.13 Not letting me cover an order
« on: September 10, 2014, 11:20:04 pm »
Weird issue that I can't make heads or tails of. 0.4.13, Windows 7, I've installed all the updates from the File menu. I shorted bitCNY earlier, and now I can't cover my orders. Here's a dump of the console; first I ran wallet_market_order_list and it showed my two margin orders, then I tried doing wallet_market_cover for each and no dice. It's telling me that it "can't find market order", when both orders are clearly mine. What gives? When I try covering from the GUI, it just sits there and does nothing. Doesn't mention any errors, just nothing. I also ran debug_list_errors, and nothing newer than 8 days old.

Here's the console dump:

Soo... volume on bitCNY is a little bit miserable and there are bids above the peg. Anybody out there? Anybody want to short into my overpriced bids? :)

If bitUSD:BTSX is 25.65 and CNY:USD is 0.16, does that mean bitCNY should ideally be at 4.104? What's the best way to determine the true value?

Look at the BTSX/CNY market on btc38, the big Chinese exchange. You could try to infer it through a bunch of intermediate steps, but I prefer the direct method.

thanks for the valuable feedback .. are you familiar with github and can add those issues at
https://github.com/BitShares/web_wallet/issues
or shall I do that?

Good call... I think I am familiar enough with github to add the issues myself. I'll let you know if I need help. :)

I just discovered the Help panel on the market screen. It doesn't scroll! I can't see past number 8.

General Discussion / biophil's random comments on 0.4.13 GUI
« on: September 10, 2014, 03:58:56 pm »
Looking forward to watching this yield thing in action! Here are my initial rambling thoughts on the new client version:

- On my account's dashboard where it shows Balances and Estimated Yield, I'd rather each asset balance to be horizontally aligned with its corresponding yield. Right now my asset balances are, in order, BTC, BTSX, USD (alphabetical, sensible enough). But my Estimated Yield entries are BTC, USD: That makes it so the USD yield is horizontally aligned with the BTC balance. Visually it would be cool if this were not the case.

- On the same screen, what does Estimated Yield mean? Is that my accumulated yield balance? A little GUI clarity would be nice there. Just seeing a quantity of USD for yield is not self-explanatory.

- On the depth chart on market screens, having both Asks and Shorts be the same color is sadly confusing because for some reason it's not obvious which is which. I know, you tried to make them two different shades of orange. Maybe if the shades were dramatically different it would work better, but I'd prefer two different colors so there's no room for confusion. Red and Yellow or something like that. Then you still have the association of warm=sell, but you don't make the graph visually ambiguous.

Not to sound over-critical! Don't get me wrong, I like where things are headed.

I wanted to confirm the minimum depth requirement but can't find it written explicitly anywhere, is it 2 million BTSX on each side?

It's reducing to 500,000 BTSX (I believe on each side): https://github.com/dacsunlimited/bitsharesx/releases

Muse/SoundDAC / Re: BitUSD used to buy artistcoins?
« on: September 08, 2014, 12:54:56 pm »
According to http://peertracks.com/faq.html artistcoins can be bought using BitUSD.

BitUSD is on a different blockchain than Bitshares Music, so can someone explain the link between them? Do I open my BTSX wallet and send BitUSD to peertracks, and then it credits me with snoop dog coins?

Also, is peertracks.com basically an easy to use frontend to Bitshares Music, so that users dont need to download the wallet or know anything about crypto?

People funding their accounts would do so in BitUSD collateralized by Notes (the Units of the Music DAC) So they really are shopping for music using Notes.. 1USD worth of Notes all packaged into what we know as a BitUSD.

Can you elaborate a little on this? Does this mean that Bitshares Music will have its own bitUSD? So after Music launches we'll have two independent markets that are creating bitUSD?

1) If you hold a balance for less than 1 month, you earn nothing.

This might be a bad idea because initially people might only hold for a few weeks as the market isn't going to be mature enough that people will hold for months at a time. I think the interest should kick in immediately on a daily or even hourly basis just as what happens with https://mcxnow.com/

Their economic model is proven to work already for an exchange. Why not just copy exactly how they do it? People seem to like receiving frequent rewards even if they are very small each day or each hour.

I think the same thing. Maybe older balances are eligible for a larger fraction of the rewards, but I think every balance should get something.
