you should have a professional QA tester with different types of computers(PCs, Macs, Unixs) and different OS versions, doing nothing but test a new version on every machines, OSs...

stop 0.4.9 before you ruin everything! redowloaded the blockchain twice, stuck till 1 day left, then no connection.
