My guess is that convergence won't be much of a problem, but that liquidity will initially be low (there will be a large bid/ask spread) for all but the highest-profile of the markets.

The one main thing that worries me is that some people around here seem to think it's going to be helpful to short BitUSD from the outset, apparently with no regard to whether it's pegged or not. If enough people do that (thinking they're shorting fiat-USD), it could take longer for the peg to get established.

When the exchange goes live, I'm shorting that bitUSD like nobody's business  ;)

I expect a lot of people will do that because they're forgetting that shorting bitUSD isn't shorting USD unless the peg is valid. So when you and everybody else short bitUSD, you'll cause the price of bitUSD to plummet far below the price of USD, and I will buy your cheap bitUSD like it's going out of style. The bitshares community will hail me as a hero for trading in support of the USD/bitUSD peg. :)

Muse/SoundDAC / How does the legal aspect of this work?
« on: July 02, 2014, 04:39:08 pm »
Hi cob (and anybody else who might know the answer),

I'm curious how "selling shares in songs" will work from a legal standpoint. My understanding is that it's illegal in the US to anonymously own shares in a company, but would it be legal to anonymously own shares in intellectual property? What would the SEC have to say about that?

I'm interested in hearing how you guys are going to deal with this kind of issue, and I'm also mulling a similar project of my own.

I think this is a great idea!!  +5%  +5% (Thanks for the recognition!  :)  )

Honestly, I don't know if you get any sleep Toast! You seem to do so much!

I think one of the main things is getting out there and promoting Bitshares on other forums, maybe specifically getting out there and making sure people are aware that it is the last 25 days of AGS donations! (So that you get more development funds and also so people can't say we didn't make an effort to let them know.)

- So can I ask that you give my 35 PTS to (or add it to another award if you were going to make one already) to whoever you think does the best job promoting Bitshares & the last days of AGS on other forums in the next few weeks?

The other day I ran across a very active thread on the NXT forum that is devoted to finding IPOs and such. There was almost no awareness of Bitshares; might be worth pitching ourselves there.

Absolutely, an expiration date would accomplish the same thing more simply.

I wish I had a little more time on my hands. I would so love to do this, but between training for my ultra and working on my PhD, I just don't think I can make any more commitments.

Two thoughts:

1) BTER is supposedly honoring PTS for BitSharesXT; they could probably be convinced to honor PTS and MMC for LTS.

2) An idea for snapshots/airdrops that has been kicked around here is a "half-life:" make unclaimed balances decay over time. Clearly, this assumes that users must do something special to "claim" their balance beyond simply importing private keys. It doesn't totally solve the problem, but might be something worth thinking about.

How s bitUSD created?
By someone going short bitUSD

Maybe that's technically correct, but it's a confusing way to say it.

BitUSD is created when someone borrows it from the bitshares network. Once you've borrowed it, you're free to sell it on the open market. You're not short bitUSD until you've sold the bitAssets that you've borrowed.

Correct, except that this is a single operation, "borrow and sell".   You cannot borrow without selling.

Can you someone, please, explain how you borrow something that does not exists????

As soon as the network lends it to you, it exists. :) that's what makes bitassets powerful: there is not a fixed supply. The network prints and destroys bitassets in proportion to the demand for them. It the supply were fixed, there would be no way for them to track real-world values.

Thanks for the clarification, bytemaster. I've always been a little fuzzy on implementation details.

Mr Dunne, I certainly hope that stalemate isn't turning you off to the idea of listing MemoryCoin! He had some bad experiences with the previous management of the coin, none of whom are still employed today.

I'm a beneficiary of MemoryCoin; follow the link in my signature to see how the coin is sponsoring me. I can't speak for the technical side of the coin, but I can certainly vouch for the proactive and engaged management team. I'm sure the team will do everything in their power to work with you to get the coin listed!

+5% for Kanti. It also evokes musical words in European languages: cantar in Spanish, cantare in Italian.

Oddly my favorite suggestion so far is "Canary".  Sing like a Canary..  ok..  not exactly fitting but.. ..

Canarys were carried into mines because they'd die before the miners, thereby allowing miners to escape.  So there is an analogy that fits for crypto nerds...

I also like canary, and +5% for that mine analogy. I love it :)

Tipon, do you really think you're going to get anywhere around here denouncing capitalism? Have you not noticed that capitalism is a popular word on these forums?

Here's my suggestion: come up with some other word for the evil system you're describing. The word "capitalism" has too many meanings. To you, it means greedy unsustainable growth and development, but to a lot of people around here it means something much less sinister: something like "the concept that people should be able to own things freely without someone else violently taking them away."

I'm just trying to give you some friendly advice to help you get your point across better. I hate seeing people shooting themselves in the foot through poor choice of words.

Yeah no new DAC should use "bit", "coin" or "dac". I'd even be in favour of that being added to the social contract. Personally I even think the brandname "bitshares" is to close to bitcoin for comfort.

Thanks for this, I agree.

Yes, there's a list on this forum somewhere. If I weren't on mobile I'd hunt it down for you.

But right now the only things on the list are MMC and bitshares X.
