General Discussion / Re: Ides of March
« on: March 12, 2014, 08:24:31 pm »
Yeah I remember that. I brought it up because www.MasterCoin.org has chosen to launch their Distributed Exchange on the Ides of March. So based on the current competition its worth noting that we should try to get out the MVP sooner than later. I do believe that we ultimately have the better product but the longer we wait the more we start to risk our "First" status.

As toast mentioned, Counterparty has had a "working" distributed exchange and custom asset management system for over a month now, and they are in no way threatening BitShares. BitShares does things that Counterparty and Mastercoin aren't built to do, so I wouldn't be too worried about launching a couple weeks later than Mastercoin. And don't forget about Second-Mover Advantage.

Yes.

There are also valid reasons one could say "no:"

Can the gold bar in your basement be unexpectedly replaced (without your consent) with an equivalent number of XTS?
Can market forces ever decide that the gold bar in your basement isn't worth its weight in gold?
Can you use the BitGLD in your wallet to purchase something in the event of a large-scale power blackout?

Everything depends on what you're looking for in gold and/or BitGLD. BitGLD has many many advantages over physical gold in terms of liquidity, fungibility, portability, etc., but when it comes down to brass tacks, it is not backed by physical gold. It is backed by a promise from the BitShares X network to pay a the market value of BitGLD in XTS. If, for whatever reason (whether it be the network is maliciously attacked, or something severe happens to weaken speculators' confidence), the network stops honoring its promise, BitGLD will go the way of MtGox's Bitcoins.

If you want to take advantage of the long-term value stability (i.e., over decades) of physical gold, then BitGLD is absolutely worse than physical gold. If you want to use gold as a medium for exchange, then BitGLD is the thing for you.

Don't worry on the BitShares question, I can fill that one in.  Any final edits, please make them by this afternoon.  Also, I want to be fair with the bounty so if you all can chime in on what you think is most fair (based on who contributed what) it would help me.  Thanks again, this looks awesome! B

I wrote 80-90% of the FAQ.md document (I think? toast and MrJeans, correct me if I'm wrong). The text in the other documents was written by MrJeans and edited by toast and myself.

Yay! Here's another one: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=499277.0

WhatOund?? It doesn't even begin to make sense.

Of course, I "expressed interest."

Ok, I've removed the references to Invictus. You people over at Invictus will probably want to fill in the blank on the "what is Bitshares" question when you have an answer. I am not really feeling up to the challenge of explaining your confusing brand identity to the world. :)

Other exchanges do this as well.
Addresses thought to be cryptsy's tend to get very large for specific coins before they add them.
So what your saying is that it could be cryptsy's address in preparation for adding MMC to their trading platform?

The general feeling I get from people is that exchanges don't carry extra reserves of coins. I don't know how often this has been confirmed (or for which exchanges), but most people believe that exchanges don't actually have 100% of their deposits. If this is true, why would they stock up on a coin before adding it to the exchange? Maybe to sell a bunch at high prices before people have had a chance to deposit? Maybe I've answered my own question...

My only final suggestion is to remove references to Invictus and replace with BitShares.  On the new site, there will be no real reference to Invictus, only BitShares, which is the main concept/organization/brand we'll now be promoting.

Also, unless I'm missing it, theres no question "What are Bitshares?" I see "What is bitsharesPTS/AGS/X?"  but not bitshares itself.  That would be a great first question to start with.   Maybe Bytemaster will give his 2cents on what he'd like to say/not say about Invictus moving forward.  Also, another question like "How is Bitshares like/not like Bitcoin?" B

There is a "what is Bitshares" question, but if there's to be no reference to Invictus, the answer will have to change. :)

Yeah, I'll need a little clarification on what you guys are intending Bitshares to actually mean - my impression was that it's a brand name for DACs, but you're talking about it like it's going to represent the name of a company/organization?

I've added the parts of MrJeans' FAQ that were missing from what we had. It was a very manual process so I might have missed something.
You'll notice I moved the "read more" sections to their own files, so the top-level FAQ (in FAQ.md) is short and sweet.

https://github.com/nmushegian/invictus-FAQ

Be sure to proofread, I tried to fix all the mistakes but there were so many I'm sure I missed some

Looking good. toast, I left you a pile of pull requests for typos and other basic edits.

I think your repo state is behind ATM

Umm... looks like I forgot to submit a pull request. Done.

I'm about ready to send this version of the FAQ on to the marketing director and claim the bounty: https://github.com/biophil/invictus-FAQ/blob/patch-3/FAQ.md

I did most of the writing, but we did collaborate a little, so of course I'll split the bounty with whoever deserves it (at the very least, toast should get some).

The FAQ is almost certainly wrong in a few minor details of the implementation of BitShares XT. I'm sure those details will change anyway before the website is launched, so I figured I'd write it as I understood it and let Invictus fill in the details when they make it public.

821
Actually, calling the company "Bitshares" is probably a good thing - since Invictus product names all start with the word BitShares :)

822
Has nobody else noticed how bizarre Adam's proposal is? To give $1m to the most profitable DAC? If any DAC is even remotely successful, its devs will (if they set it up right)  make hundreds of millions of dollars. Why would Invictus waste a piddling $1m five years from now on a company that will be worth billions? The AGS funds should be invested up front to give DAC devs a leg up right now, when speed is absolutely critical. Long-term bounties for successful DACs would be an egregious waste of funds.

823
"A company called Bitshares." Excellent.

The FAQ is getting pretty close, in my opinion. It's a little rough in places, but I think it covers the stuff it should cover. We need an answer to "How does BitShares XT work?"

I haven't gotten past "BitShares XT works by..." myself. :) Anybody have a nice 3-sentence explanation?

Hey peoples, thanks for the feedback  :)

I am happy to make changes. You right, I think there is value in having a short easy to read FAQ so that someone can quickly go through and get information. There is also value in being able to fully answer questions people may have. When writing this I was thinking about all the information I would have wanted when starting out. So maybe different versions in different places? or maybe a short answer and a 'read more' link to drop down some extra text?

Yep toast also told me about the github after I posted. Havnt used this before, but first time for everything.
Just going to wait for some feedback from Brian before I do anything.
I think they may be off to the conference atm.

I really like the idea of the FAQ having lots of "read more" links to places where readers can get more information, because a good central repository of authoritative information is also severely lacking right now. It's just that "more information" is really daunting to someone who just wants to know "what is the difference between PTS and AGS" or some such.

This is also my first time using github, I like the opportunity to be paid to learn useful tools :)
