For fun, I have been thinking about how Bitcoin (or any cryptocurrency, really) could facilitate a better model for democracy.  I describe a crude model I devised here:
http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/37suw8/how_might_bitcoin_facilitate_a_better_model_for/

I lurk this forum and value the opinions of people here, so I thought I would provide the link in case anyone is interested in reading it.

I donated Bitcoin to AngelShares from two separate wallets.  I imported one of these and claimed my BTSX a few weeks ago.  I just tried to import the other.  I think it worked but strange things are happening with the BitsharesX client, making it unusable:

1.  I transferred the balance of the first wallet.  This is indicated in the transactions, but my total balance still includes this value.  I presume this is because he sync has not caught up yet, however...

2.  As the BitsharesX client syncs, it becomes more and more unstable.  My account information seems to disappear, I can't transfer any BTSX, and it eventually freezes.  I have to force quit.

3.  When I open the client after the force quit, it sometimes shows the correct balance, but I can't transfer any BTSX - my username and robot are gone from the transfer screen.  The sync timer starts to fall further and further behind for about a minute, then stops moving all together.  I have to force quit.

I've spent hours trying to figure this out.  Can anyone help?  I've tried re-installing the BitsharesX client and replacing my wallet data, but this doesn't work.  The same sequence of problems occurs.  I'm running on Windows 7 x64.

General Discussion / Sports Betting DAC based on BitsharesX
« on: October 02, 2014, 10:29:22 pm »
I'll preface by saying that I don't really watch sports or gamble (unless you consider trading cryptocurrencies gambling).  Nonetheless, it occurred to me that a fork of BitsharesX might work as a sports betting DAC.  The only change would be the names of the assets and the marketing.  Each chain would be a professional sports league like the NHL, NBA, NFL, etc. and the "assets" would be each team in the league.  Just as the assets in BitsharesX track the relative value of their non-digital counterparts, the team "assets" of NHLshares for example might be expected to dynamically track an abstract valuation of each team relative to the others.  If marketed accordingly, users should expect team valuations to increase/decrease relative to the others based on how the teams are performing in the league.  Users can buy in and trade valuation between teams throughout the series, realizing profits or losses based on how their team picks do.  It could get quite interesting with high volume trading and dramatic swings in team valuations based on the results of key games.  Furthermore, in this fantasy world with cross chain trading, you could even go long and short on various teems between different sports.

Since the peg is working for bitassets, it seems this could work too based on the same principals.  Such a DAC could be a popular gateway into the Bitshares ecosystem.

I don't have the knowledge/skills to make this project a reality (even though it is just a clone of BitsharesX), I just thought it was simple enough to work and wondered if others think it has potential (or if the idea has already been considered/debated).

Technical Support / BitsharesX client crashes in Mac OSX 10.6.8
« on: August 27, 2014, 08:33:41 pm »
The BitsharesX 0.4.8-a client crashes immediately when I try to open it.  I have tried 0.4.8-b with the same result.  Can anyone tell me how to resolve this?  I would prefer not to upgrade my operating system, by the way.

Thanks in advance!

I'm interested to hear people's opinions regarding this new development and how it will affect Bitshares X and other Invictus DACs:
http://letstalkbitcoin.com/blockchain-2-0-let-a-thousand-chains-blossom/#.U0XZZMcnguc

It is being suggested on reddit that two-way pegging will be the downfall of alt coins:

General Discussion / Bitshares versus Counterparty?
« on: February 03, 2014, 05:39:02 pm »
I just came across something called Counterparty, which appears to be a new competitor to Bitshares:

I would be interested to hear people's opinions about it.

Marketplace / Generic 1 and 2 Word .bit Domain Names
« on: January 24, 2014, 04:40:49 am »
I am selling .bit domain names here:
http://www.nmcdomains.com/

For the moment, all domain names are on sale for 1/10 their listed price if you are paying the equivalent in PTS.  Make me an offer if you would like to buy multiple domains.
