General Discussion / "Create Backup Now" button not working
« on: December 14, 2017, 09:16:08 pm »
The web-wallet migration to https://wallet.bitshares.org appears scammy.  I suggest a link be added where discussion of this change or announcement of the change took place with trusted community members participating in the discussion.  It feels strange, having not logged into the wallet for a couple of weeks, to navigate to the familiar address and be requested to upload a backup with password to another website.

That said, the landing page has a button to create a backup which does not work.  Clicking on it does not create a backup .bin file.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

General Discussion / BitShares' social contract was such a strong idea

And I think we are seeing confirmation of how strong it is in the positive reception of Peerplays.

Now I am excited about this project: YOYOW

It is amazing to me that the authors of the social contract decided to abandon it in their first subsequent project.  It will be interesting to see Steem and YOYOW face off.

I encourage everyone in the community to keep the social contract strong!  The viral marketing and motivational effects are as alive as ever.

With BTER gone, where are people buying BTS with the most competitive prices? (other than BTC38)

General Discussion / Enhancing Bitshares' Security
« on: January 16, 2015, 08:37:30 pm »
Could a mechanism be put in place which temporarily transfers blocksigning power to additional clients on the network in the case of a coordinated attack against the delegates?  Could these additional clients be somehow incentivized to participate?

This would enhance the security of the Bitshares' network and improve upon what Stan calls "sufficiently decentralized".

I think it's undervalued in any case, but what changed now?

Do you just install the client and then that's it, you're mining?

Technical Support / insufficient funds?
« on: November 02, 2014, 08:39:18 pm »
I have a wallet with two accounts in it.  One account is registered on the blockchain and the other I just imported using a Wif private key - it is not registered on the blockchain.  The imported account has exactly 0.2 BTSX in it (I am testing cold storage ::)).  I am now trying to send 0.1 BTSX to the account in my wallet which is registered on the blockchain and I am getting the error "insufficient funds".  The wallet is set with a transaction fee of 0.1 BTSX.

Can anyone see where I am going wrong here?

Another question: With a NON-registered account, how do you send fund to a BTSX address?  Do you always have to create a new contact and use an account_name or is there a field somewhere where you can enter the whole public key?

General Discussion / v. 0.4.23 windows 32bit issue
« on: October 29, 2014, 01:51:37 pm »
Binaries do not allow the creation of a new wallet.  The client behaves as if the program has been previously installed on a computer where it was never installed - asking for a password instead of showing the terms of agreement, etc.

Technical Support / Cold Storage Technical Question
« on: October 26, 2014, 02:37:09 pm »
I've been through the Wiki and understand it, but I would like to know if cold storage can be done without <account_name>.

Basically I am interested in using exclusively public and private keys.

Imagine the following:

I send funds to a public key which I generate using the Linux tool or with the client offline.  I hold the WIF private key for this public key.  This account is then NOT registered with an <account_name> on the blockchain.

If I later create a completely new wallet and try to import funds using the WIF private key will I have problems?  There are some sentences in the Wiki which lead me to believe this might be the case.

General Discussion / inactivity fee and security
« on: October 17, 2014, 01:18:36 pm »
The inactivity fee has been discussed a lot.  What I am curious to ask is how it will be technically implemented and what the implications of that are for security.

Imagine I make a cold storage wallet and send funds there which I leave for 2 years.  If only I hold the private key to that account, how will the balance of that account be accessible to others (the developers I assume) and changed if the inactivity fee has been implemented.

Technical Support / How to remove BitsharesX from Windows
« on: September 26, 2014, 04:19:13 pm »
I'm playing around with the new release of the GUI offline, mostly to learn about the console functions, and noticed that upon removing the program and reinstalling I am no longer presented with the option to create a new wallet.  I get the "Unlock" screen.

This happens if I try to uninstall with the built in uninstaller or uninstalling through the control panel.  Does anyone know a way to do a completely fresh install in Windows without wiping the hard drive?
