General Discussion / Re: Wow. That was a shitty day for bitshares
« on: November 04, 2015, 11:55:58 am »
BTS needs to be promoted as a tool of freedom that it is.    It needs to develop its own mini economy of people that are passionate about a common goal.

Unfortunately, growing a community in such a manner is much slower than most would like.

I'll have to disagree here. While think freedom is really important, I'll have to accept the fact that most people don't care about it.

Of course Bitshares has to be "freedom compatible", otherwise it won't be useful and wont' revolutionize anything. But using freedom as a main marketing point is just waste of time.

Freedom lovers are a tiny group, and most of them are already using bitcoin, and especially right now when the BTC is rocketing, they are not interested in questioning the foundations of Bitcoin and analyze how bad it actually is (in the long run).

So I am a normal guy with a bank account, debit card and a PayPal account.
And I use my PayPal account (or my debit card) 2-3 times a month to pay for the stuff I buy online and it looks like a free service for me.
(It looks like this because the fess are hidden from me and even if I'm smart and I know that ultimately I pay for the fees - as they are just factored in the price of the product I'm buying - I don't really care because altogether the fees cost me less than $3 per month)

If we skip the freedom part - what's the big deal for me to convince me to dump PayPal (or debit card) and start using bitUSD / bitEUR / bitCNY instead?

The Bitcoin price is going to become distorted at some point -- maybe sooner rather than later...
like the London (UK) and New York residential housing markets that are the "depositories" of copious amounts of "hot money"
that need laundering and a safe haven...

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2015-11-02/bitcoin-more-doubles-2015-lows-chinese-ignore-easing-capital-controls

"... however if a few hundred million Chinese decide that the time has come to use bitcoin as the capital controls

bypassing currency of choice, and decide to invest even a tiny fraction of the $22 trillion in Chinese deposits in bitcoin

(whose total market cap at last check was just over $3 billion), sit back and watch as we witness the second coming of the

bitcoin bubble..."

But is this really a reliable launching pad upon which to build a foundation for a renaissance of the Bitcoin ecosphere?
If so, by definition it would be counter to the decentralization ethos and effectively become a potential single point of
failure..

I think BitShares just needs to make ONE feature/aspect/use case that grabs the attention of the mainstream and they
will discover the rest of the benefits themselves...

e,g Can you imagine for example if a company provided an option  to its employees to have a percentage of their
paycheck direct deposited into a basket of bitAssets, instead of just a checking account or 401(k)

or Pension funds not having to rely on such "venerable" institutions as JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs etc...or worse, end up like the employees of Enron..(at retirement age)

If BitShares could demonstrate a real world practical demonstration to show how organizations & situations like this
for example

http://ouroregon.org/millions-in-management-fees-mean-lower-returns-on-investments-and-bigger-paydays-for-banks/

can use what BitShares has to offer....Many other people, institutions, media, academia, businesses, students, etc. will discover all the other BitShares features, benefits and technology....

and the BTS market price will never look back..

Just the thoughts of an average Joe..

DAC PLAY / Re: PLAY will be listed on Yunbi.com exchange today
« on: October 31, 2015, 05:21:02 pm »
QUESTION TO FORUM

Does anyone know where one can buy or trade for BitShares PLAY assets, PLS,  other than Yunbi exchange?
Yunbi only

Is there any way that PLS could be acquired via blocktrades, shapeshift, metaexchange??
No

Since BTER has locked down all BTS in their customer accounts since BTS 2.0 migration on October 13th, it is
not possible to even withdraw the vested (or vesting) portion of the "sharedrop" PLS to the DACPLAY wallet and of course there has been no explanation posted on their website or sent via e-mail?
Exchange has no an obligation to do a sharedrop distribution if they didn't promise it. You can contact BTER by support@mail.bter.com

Shouldn't the PLS be available for withdrawal from the exchange since DACPLAY has not migrated to Graphene yet?
Should. But the point is BTER never listed PLS, it is not about the upgrade.

So I'm reluctant to open an account with YUNBI since they want a drivers license sent to
them, just to trade crypto not fiat currencies..??

It's bad enough to that users may get Goxxed by BTER/BTC38 but to have your personal info floating around
with only a "promise"your account has privacy protections!  Forget it..

I think it's mainstream that exchanges must have a regulation (by gov demand).

Thanks LOGXING for your reply !

I guess I won't be trading or buying any more PLS then for a while...

I'm sorry but the BTER exchange EXPLICITLY encouraged their users to not only leave their crypto assets on the exchange but
PROMISED to handle all sharedrops, they even emailed me...as you can see from these posts on their websites
they did it for BitShares Music and for PTS and DNS

https://bter.com/article/4582                https://bter.com/article/3132   PTS for MUSIC

and the PLAYDAC sharedrop happened after the DNS & MUSIC sharedrops and long before they were hacked

https://bter.com/article/4760   robbery....and they promised to payback their users BTC...

so now I guess we are being to told we are SOL..and to get lost...yet I am supposed to trust YUNBI with my personal ID information !?  when tomorrow or next week they could disappear...?

and YUNBI like BTER, Poloniex, etc. and other exchanges should only need ID info for people who wish to trade fiat...and I don't have a CNY bank account or live in China...so it puzzles me that they would require this for  non-Chinese crypto only trading..

I don't see how this is a benefit for the growth of PLS...

Anyway thanks..

I tried emailing BTER support a week or so before the BTS 2.0 migration....STILL HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY REPLY...

I WILL NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH BTER EVER AGAIN..!

According to Yunbi.com   exchange ,

You can now deposit the PLS (Play Shares) you get from crowd-funding stage to yunbi.com , and it can be traded today at 00:00 Bejing time , 2015-5-28  .

I understand your confusion.  The original terms and conditions stated that normal (non-membership) accounts could create additional accounts without the benefit of siphoning the new accounts tx fees - as it turns out this was false.  The purpose of exporting keys in this case was to circumvent this change; I was trying to make a new account using the faucet since only premium/member accounts could create new accounts then import the newly generated account into my original wallet.  I DO NOT recommend this as the process corrupted my entire wallet.  Personally, I ended up just buying the premium membership.

Thanks for the explanation!  It was a bit of a brain teaser trying to see the logic, but I get it now...

I still have to do a bit more reading/digging around this forum, etc., to fully understand the pros and cons
of various aspects of this upgrade..e.g webwallet vs light wallet vs full desktop CLI..and obviously things are
still quite fluid at this early stage..so I appreciate learning from the explanation of your "experiments" so I don't
screw things up myself!  :-)  and I agree a lifetime membership seems to be the best option currently..

however given the long term nature of the BTS adventure..

I think about questions like  " Is a lifetime membership infinite like a corporation, if a user leaves their accounts/wallets as an income producing asset belonging to their estate?  Or does the membership end when a person's heart stops beating?  Hmm  I guess a "smart contract" is needed here somewhere..ha!  (Life experience with vexing probate makes one think like this..LOL)

Is there a way to export the private keys from that new account so it can be imported into the users main wallet?

Just curious...I am trying to study and understand the rules of account registration and referrals, etc.,among all the other things in BTS 2.0..

I maybe missing something but.

Wouldn't the purpose of exporting a private key be for security purposes..??  (i.e. like a cold storage/ paper wallet like in BTC?

Why import the private key from a new wallet back into an already existing user's main wallet (CLI or webwallet)?
It just moves the balance of the assets out of one wallet into another no?  Is the webwallet a higher security risk?

Isn't that the same as sending a stealth transaction from Wallet A to Wallet B?
Can't BALANCES be concealed by simply making stealth transactions?

I've been searching for a thread that shows how much a lifetime membership costs?  is it $100?

Thanks..

EDIT:  I've done a bit more reading so it seems like a life membership costs ~ $50.00  ...
but I couldn't create an account with premium name with the openledger dot info wallet?

General Discussion / Re: Migration Guide for 1.0 to 2.0
« on: October 12, 2015, 10:59:02 pm »
On Windows 8.1, v0.9.3c

I just tried to export keys from the console. Its says "ok" in the console but there is no sign of the keys.json file in the appdata/roaming/bitshares folder.

I had to run as administrator to get it to save the file on windows.  I tried entering in full path etc and nothing worked until i ran as admin.

I really dont know why this has not been fixed its going to cause so many problems come the 2.0 launch...

I am having the same problem..except I've got Win 7 Professional..even run as administrator did not help..
Is there a reason why the json file does not show up in the "appdata/roaming/bitshares" folder..?  However when I tried to do it again whether using the full path name or not.. the console says"  File already exists!!...

Does anyone know what is the command to use in the console to delete this "invisible" in Windows explorer" file?
Or does it not matter and I should just save a version of keys.json in some other location to be imported after the 13th?

This is very frustrating...It almost makes me want to leave my bts on the Exchanges....however they have given no indication as to
whether or not they are going to migrate/upgrade..!?

I think the value of BTS will increase significantly if one did not feel such apprehension and nervousness when trying to manage
one's crypto assets...(I've already given up trying to figure out what to do with some PTS left in a webwallet..)

Thanks

P.S.. As an "Average Joe" I don't comment much on the forum but I do visit as often as I can to try and keep up with what's going on...but I wish things like this migration was easier to accomplish and less nerve wracking..:-)

Hey sirlo,
Under Windows, that particular json (keys file) gets dumped into the C:/Program File section... or where ever you located/installed your Bitshares.exe file too.
It does not dump/store into the appdata/roaming folder like your normal wallet "export" does.
Hope this helps!

Thanks emailtooaj..!

That worked...I was able to find the keys (json) file and make the necessary offline backups...Let's hope the
"IMPORT" process goes a little smoother..:-)....

and I noticed that Poloniex, etc.. made an announcement but not BTER??  I'm assuming that they will upgrade to 2.0 but in the absence of any written instructions or reassurances.. I did not want to risk leaving serious amounts of BTS in their hands...Let's hope everything goes OK..

General Discussion / Re: Selling PTS Post Snapshot
« on: November 07, 2014, 10:56:21 pm »
Hi everyone,

Does anyone know if the PTS network is temporarily suspended or if it will ever resume normal operations?

I had withdrawn some PTS from bter to deposit in an online PTS web-wallet on 11-4 before the snapshot, but it still
had not shown up in the wallet as of 11-5 and now I cannot even login into the PTS wallet ...it just says "login fail"?
I checked via the pts explorer and the transaction was included in a block ..

Has anyone else encountered these kinds of problems?  Is there a thread anywhere discussing what is going on with
PTS..

Thanks..

I'm trying to see if bter and btc38 can do retroactive snapshots

Hey toast,
Thank you… I appreciate the sentiment expressed and fully recognize that you are doing
your best under arduous circumstances.
Even though I have a fair amount of business experience ( in startup and other situations) this merger and its aftermath was not exactly the kind of situation someone on the outside could foresee or hedge against  -- even with a pocketful of bitUSD   .
But I know how dynamic situations can be when you are breaking new ground so to speak ..and this DAC/DPOS ecosphere is quite pioneering.. and for me it’s a challenging learning curve and I’m sure for most  “newbie -investor-shareholder– enthusiasts “   it’s also a venture into unknown territory ..  I was trying to choose whether to invest in precious metals, DNS or BTC…I chose DNS…

So obviously you, BM etc., had to make some tough choices and I see that the I3 team is voluntarily trying to provide consolation at their own expense --  which in this day and age is indeed a rare principled and altruistic gesture.
So kudos, you exhibit much integrity and that gives me faith to probably invest even more than I might have initially contemplated & I will continue to support..
The silver lining in this situation is that I and  all US taxpayers can still write off up to $3k in capital losses against ordinary income on our tax returns and for those who may have incurred greater losses they can carry them forward to future years to be offset against, HOPEFULLY, substantial  BTS(x)capital gains.!
I don’t know about the tax laws in other countries but all US based investors are aware of this, so no harm in reminding DNS (USA) holders..   and of course those of us who have also lost a chunk on BTC…(    are painfully aware..LOL !
So the best solace is success and I wish the best for all the DACs..(or  as of Nov. 5th..a.k.a. BTS features..!)

and thanks to Hadrian (link) also for his or her words
https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=10381.75
I think it was just a case of unfortunate timing for me.

« on: October 23, 2014, 11:44:07 pm »
Thanks Cube for your response.  I have been reading the relevant threads today and yes I can see that all parties involved -- toast, BM, etc., the exchanges -- are taking extraordinary steps to compensate all those who may have
been unintentionally harmed.  I guess we are a derivative definition of the "innocent bystanders" and it is quite
telling about the general character and sentiment of this community that everyone is willing to make sacrifices to do
the right thing.   I think this bodes well for the future where I'm sure even bigger issues await.  :-)

Also thanks to Toast,  I will post a detailed reply in the10381  thread.

Hey Cube,

I replied to your PM.   It would be an understatement to say a lot transpired over the past few days..

Looks like I will be SOL as far as my DNS investment is concerned...

Hey Cube,

I was trying to reply to your post..but I wasn't allowed to include your "quote" in my reply because of the external link included

I figured this out after I sent you a pm.. :-)   Again proof I am very new at this but I'm learning.

Anyway if you can reply either way that's fine.  Even if I can't register a keyid  I will still purchase some DNS

thanks again

No problem.  We were all new users once. :)

I replied your PM.

I saw your PMed post. I think I will reply here for the benefits of others who are in the same predicament. If this is of any consolation to you, I like you to know that I too have recently bought DNS left on the exchange during the sudden plunge.  And I believe there are a number of people out there who are facing the same challenge.  All hope is not lost.  There is an attempt to contact bter and btc38 to see if they can do an retroactive snapshot. See https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=10381.msg136265#msg136265

If the attempt turns out positive, you may get your lost DNS back.  :)

Actually I'm not a trader, I was newbie trying to get a wallet registered because I couldn't move my DNS otherwise
and so I left my DNS on my BTER account for a few days and now..

I'm SOL simply because..??  a bitshares registration procedure prevented me from immediately moving my dns purchase from the exchange which I would have normally done.

Quite a memorable first BitShares experience I'm having..

All those who bought at Bter are out of luck? All those who claimed after the announcement and sold are also at a loss?

The gainers are those who claimed earlier and sold immediately after the announcement. They got a good price and some free DNS.

Or have I misunderstood it all completely?

I don't think there are any losers except those with funds on the exchange and US.  Those with funds on an exchange were "traders"... those who bought in the days prior and withdrew to hold are OK... those who bought or sold after the announcement are also OK.

Hi Cube

I am a newbie trying to register on KeyID but I am encountering the same "chicken & egg" problem as with
BTSX...I acquired some DNS tokens and tried to send to my wallet but Bter would not process
the transaction.. I can't use freekeyid...I don't have a twitter or google authentication account.

Could I ask if anyone could send the required DNS so I can finish the registration process.. I will
pay you back with interest or contribute to your faucet in return.

..
thanks for the link
After getting a few errors of bad usernames now I get the error message :Oh no! The faucet has run dry!
Now what? :-)

I just sent some fund to the above Free KeyID faucet.  But the fund is running out fast because the registration fee has gone up a lot to 500DNS.  We need donors! Please help to contribute to the faucet by sending your DNS to ID : bitcube.  Many thanks!
