Technical Support / Re: How to backup and restore Protoshares-qt wallet?
« on: December 06, 2013, 10:19:23 am »
Is there any information online on how to do this. I see there's a backup function but no restore.  Noob.

Technically you can dump your private key and write it down somewhere.  However all you really need to do is make sure to 1) encrypt your wallet and 2) make a copy of your wallet.dat file found in %AppData%/protoshares on Windows and ~/.protoshares on Linux.

The wallet.dat file is small and fits easily on usb sticks, SD cards, etc.  Make a few copies of it and keep them in different physical locations (home, work, etc.).

It is also important to understand that you should refresh this backup of your wallet.dat file at least every 99 transactions.  The reason for this is that the wallet starts out with a pool of 100 key pairs that are used for transactions that require new key pairs.  When you have burned through your pool of keys the wallet-qt client will create an additional 100 keys in the pool.  At this point you would need to refresh all your backups of your wallet.dat file so that the new transactions using these keys are backed up as well.

If you need to use your backup simply install the client somewhere and copy your wallet.dat back into the directory you backed it up from.  Once the block chain catches up you'll see all your transactions.

You can keep your wallet.dat file off line all the time and only drop it into a client data directory when you want to do a transaction.  It doesn't need to stay in sync with the network until you're ready to do a transaction.  None of my wallet.dat files with balances stay on a computer for more than the few minutes it takes to do a transaction.  Even the best hackers can't steal a file sitting on an SD card on a shelf  8).

Think of the wallet.dat file sort of like a SIM card for a cell phone.  It's the only thing that matters...the rest is just generic hardware/software.

I encrypted the wallet and changed the file name.  Where does one find the directory on the client?  Are you talking about the console?  Im trying to understand this, "wallet.dat back into the directory you backed it up from".  Thank you.

Encrypt your wallet with at least 15 chars of password (alphanumeric with special chars) in Setting -> Encrypt Wallet

Backup / print your private keys
Get the private key of each of your PTS address using command dumpprivkey <address>
To import private key to wallet importprivkey <privatekey>

Hi there,

Where on the client does one use those commands?  Cant mess this up.  Are you talkng about the console?  Sorry Im really computer dumb but love PTS, thanks...

for  you'll find the wallet.dat  user/youruser/.protoshares/...

/.protoshares/ is an hidden folder...

I dont see it?  Also, I backed up the wallet then I encrypted it?  Was I suppose to encrypt it first then back it up?

Just like for windows, there is a protoshares QT wallet you can download for mac.  After download and running the client, just like with any other crypto wallet, the actual wallet file should be located in library/application support/protoshares.   If you don't see it there, then I would advice not to use it.

Do you know where I can find it on windows8?  thanks in advance

My apologies as the title should have read, " PTS client" and not, 'PTYS client".

Anyone know how to remove or uninstall PTS client on Window8?  I cant find it under control panel>  uninstall program.  Finally got my second client to sync and receive blocks fine with the green check light on the bottom right corner.  How will this impact the wallet?  I know this isnt the last client update.  I really REALLY dislike windows and told myself to learn Linux and I do not have the time between work, family, and now this!  LOL

Thank you all and go PTS!

Thanx all, I made transfers to an exchange and it took soooooo long, are the exchanges not as secure as wallet's? Why?

I read some exchanges has disappeared with investors BTC/fiat money.  Just bough me some shares and I feel really nervous as an early investor as the client doesnt even connect to the block source.  Some admin drop me a link to a download and still nothing.  Now my PTS sits on an exchange right now vulnerable.  This is unacceptable.

I have uploaded a new wallet with more seed nodes built in: http://the-iland.net/static/downloads/windows-protoshares-0.3.0.zip

Doesnt do nothing...could it be the old PTS client isnt uninstalled?  How does one uninstall it?  BTW, I clicked on your link and ran it but windows8 doesnt want to open it?  I would love to mine too.

WOW, thanks for the link but does anyone know how to uninstall the old protoshares on windows8?  It doesnt even show up in the control panel under uninstall programs.  Im asking because I do not want conflicting problems running two versions of protoshares.  I mean, I just downloaded the client.  Got PTS on an exchange and I cant even secure it tonight.  How sad...

Hello, I am sorry, but this is unacceptable since your organization positions itself as --you should use us because we are more fair than the other guys-- I am writing a news report on fraudulent crypto-currencies, however, I will give you guys 1 chance to fix this ongoing problem immediately otherwise people need to know about this alt-coin. I am also aware of other incidents like starting mining ahead of everyone else when they were told that would not be the case. Waiting for correct instructions to be able to mine by Monday morning.

how about you actually read http://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=912.0 this thread?

also, what news site are you writing for?

expecting an answer with proof by monday morning :D

My client says no block source available?  Whats going on?  How do I fix it?  Thanks in advance...

Hello, I just downloaded and installed my wallet. Not connecting / says zero active connections. Are these the IP addresses I need to fix that? If so where exactly do I enter this information? under proxy? If it is the debug file--where exactly in the debug file do I enter this info. I just want to connect to the network. Please help!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you.

Best regards,

Claire
