Technical Support / Re: !!! Stupid Questions Thread !!!
« on: September 08, 2014, 01:29:55 am »
Question:

If I have btc and I happy with the value of approximately 480.00 +/- USD per btc, can I purchase BTSX > then transfer BTSX to my wallet > then purchase BitUSD and store the value in the exchange and retain my approximately 480.00 USD? Rather than sell my BTC on coinbase or elsewhere and convert it to fiat and store it in a bank?  What are the advantages or disadvantages if this is how it would work.

Thanks!

Absolutely! On Bter.com you can actually move directly from BTC -> BitUSD.

If you can't trade directly from BTC to BitUSD, like you said, you can go from BTC -> BTSX -> move to wallet/exchange app -> trade to BitUSD.

Your $480 will be "locked in" even if BTSX goes down in value.

I don't know if you've heard about the announcement but starting this Wednesday, holders of BitUSD (and any other BitAsset) will be paid interest on their holdings. You'll be sheltered from the volatility of cryptocurrencies and you'll still be making about 5 - 10% interest per year. So moving your BTC into BitUSD will be considerably more profitable than keeping it on an exchange or in a local bank.

BitGLD and BitSLV will launch in the near future so putting your funds in gold and silver will be another option for you to consider. :D

So basically this is the best thing ever? If I can be the test sample as a layman // the future average user...this is incredible.

I can put some savings stash in bitUSD and convert to physical fiat if I ever wanted to and be gaining 5-10% per year?

General Discussion / Re: Is Bytemaster Satoshi??! :)

Ah, so he was just agreeing with himself about BitSharesX 0.0.0 on that bitcointalk thread in 2010?  :)

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=532.msg6306#msg6306

For anyone entering crypto in the last year, seeing this is really kind of amazing. Satoshi is just a mythical figure to us who came along after he/she was long gone.

Lets just say that anyone who bought BitUSD yesterday could sell now and make money.    This is the feature the PEG is supposed to enable.

I earned about 1,000,000 BTSX trading the peg.

We are working to improve the peg further and we will get there.  Bugs will get fixed, wallets will become stable.

Can you handle my btsx for me? I'm losing. :/

Personally I'm pretty sure the price drop is a natural correction after Bitshares' big new feature (bitassets) was finally released. People are so used to major corrections after a big, hyped up feature releases that it almost becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy to see a 50% correction. They still seem to be stuck in the world of alt-coin p&d movements...hoping to see them caught off guard when Bitshares climbs again, as soon as people realize the incredible value/possibilities being offered here.

My prediction is only that but I'm betting on this taking place over the next week.

Looks like a 20% correction.  Yay.
looks more like a 35% atm  :(

I bought at .0001 and I'm holding for now.

General Discussion / Proof of Ownership?
« on: August 05, 2014, 12:50:56 pm »
Hope it's okay to start another topic here as this has been one of my other ideas regarding the blockchain.

How this thought started: Let's say I'm an artist (which I am) and I am selling my work in editions of 10 (which I do) and I'd like to provide someone with proof of ownership that's backed up by the blockchain. Wouldn't I be able to stamp/print onto artwork a QR code that could be embedded into the blockchain, and when a sale occurs, the transfer of ownership would be the "proof" you own it?
Problem: Would it be possible to forge a QR code and would the idea of having this transaction on the blockchain help with that? No one is forging my artwork now, but from what I know about the art world, the more exclusivity there is the better the price I can sell my pieces for. Anyhow...

I'm thinking this may even be more applicable to a car or something. Rather than just serial number, you could print the QR code and provide a transaction of ownership from dealer to new owner, this could in turn speed up the registration process at the DMV and all that as scanning the code takes seconds and can be done from anywhere. When a car is stolen or whatever, you could even have a QR code on a license plate that the police could scan from in their vehicle and check for violations/being stolen/etc.

Edit:  Even something as simple as a bicycle, or a camera, or anything really. Serial codes could be printed below the QR code, then when a sale is made of the object, the QR code is part of the sale but must be transferred via blockchain to be activated since the "token" would be in possession of the owner of said object. If you have E-bay for example, one the item is sold, the QR code would have to be input into the site to transfer ownership, I mean, it could be used on a house, on tickets to a basketball game etc. In my mind I'm imagining something like a hierarchy that could happen as well if you really want to chase this thought further. You checkout your groceries, or your holiday shopping from a store and you purchased lots of things, well you get one QR code that would have all of the items sold stored in the one code. It could help with budgeting as it could record whatever you're spending your money on as well. The ease of use I imagine is probably very far off, but if you could go into the store, pick up your items, walk past the register, scan your BTC or whatever coin, have the transaction take place and have a receipt that has proof of ownership on it, walk to your car and see a total tally of how and what your spent your money on this day/week/month/year.

Thanks.

KeyID / Re: lets find a name for the DNS DAC

It's like you could have called it 'Toast DNS.'  People would have an idea what the DAC did but after a while they would just start calling it it's cool brand name 'Toast'
If you call it BitShares DNS, there's no cool brand name for it to become and if you make it BitShares 'Cool brand name', like X, then you lose the function. Tricky.
I don`t believe you need a function in the name.
It have to be easy to spell and need the ability to burn itself into peoples minds and it could not harm if its only cool.
Take for example Ripple, Nxt, Google, Sprite, Fanta ... those brands are not related to any funtion, but who cares, they sound cool.

So yeah why not call it BitShares Toast. In 2 years no one will ask anymore what is Toast? Ist just there and People know what to do with it.

 +5% +5% on "Bitshares Toast"

General Discussion / Bitshares Go
« on: August 04, 2014, 10:20:24 pm »
Hi,

I'm terrible at anything technical, I cannot code, and I often am blown away by the conversations and thoughts/ideas that are brought up in this forum.

Here's a thought:

Bitshares Go or Bitshare Ride.

This would be a DAC that sponsors riders/athletes who are competitive in their field but don't participate in traditional sports. Think Extreme sports and how they're often or almost exclusively done by one participant.

I come from the surf world where travel is one of the biggest humps to get over as a rider. Plane tickets are often expensive and there's a need for sponsorship if you're trying to pursue some sort of career in the field. Often surfers must take it upon themselves, and I'm sure it's the same in other sports, to find their own sponsorship and create that path themselves.

What if there is a sponsorship DAC? Something you could apply to, upload a resume, allocate yourself shares, and then use the exchange of shares you've created for some value. As you place in events and succeed in your career, the tokens or shares of your talent will rise and fall in value. Imagine a place where a surfer is basically riding on themselves, as they peak, their values rise, if they win a competition, maybe the value rises, if they get a DUI and screw up their career, it falls.

Am I way off the mark?

Thanks!

General Discussion / Re: What is the Counter For?

Once Day 200 arrives this week, the state of the donation chains on that day will be used for all other DACs.  So we are counting down to the mega default Snapshot at the End of Time...

The Mayan's can't touch this!

...

As far as AGS donors are concerned, Day 200 might as well be...

The Snapshot at The End of Time

for every remaining BitShares DAC that will ever be released.   Since nothing about AGS will change after that.  Day 200 is the terminal AGS snapshot - regardless of when subsequent DAC PTS snapshots may be announced.

I have been checking the donations nearly everyday since I discovered bitshares around March 2nd...this feels like a monumentally important week to get information out there for donations. "This is your last chance!"
