General Discussion / Who wants btsxtalk ?
« on: July 21, 2014, 02:15:37 pm »

I am real close to setting up btsxtalk.org using simple machines forum.  This means it'll be a lot like this place or bitcointalk

Cons) Splits off users into 2 sites intead of bitsharestalk - This can be bad for traffic in general.  It becomes a pain to now view 2 forums.

Pros)  We get a forum with lots of subforums.  This can help promote discussion.  This also lets Bitsharestalk.org go back to other core interests.  All forums are back to top level.  I'll enforce exist usernames from this forum, but otherwise very pro-speech and sock puppets are allowed.  No more need to hide forums on a second page because of space issues. It can promote discussion because now people can go there straight for btsx.  There will be a lot of different things to discuss once the next stage goes live.  We already have voting, delegate running, etc etc.

I'll make plenty of mods to clean up spam, but no one will be able to see IPs except me the owner.  (Assuming SMF allows that.)  It would be run like bitcointalk.org and here. No personal information given out that isn't already made available.  I will delete over the top maliciousness.  I will only edit posts to remove personal or tasteless content.

The reason I am posting this here is that I really don't care to do it if I don't feel I have a large amount of community support.  Maybe people think it isn't worth it to potentially fragment the forums.  There is nothing wrong with this place btw.  It is just becoming cluttered.

So I am trying to understand how Bitshares X charges market fees.  Can someone give a short example with a few participants interacting ?  Everything I've found so far has to do with a previous version of Bitshares X.  I've read the first several pages of threads that look promising and nothing in there explains by concrete example.

Anyone ?  Hmm maybe that thread where BM gave a bounty for Bitshares X exploits ..

General Discussion / Use of democracy in promotion.
« on: June 29, 2014, 05:31:21 am »
For discussion ..

I've seen 2 arguments to using "Democracy" when referring to DPOS's selling points.

One is that using democracy allows people to attack DPOS.  "Tyranny of the majority".

Others have suggested that it is a strong word that appeals to most everyone.

I was talking to Clout and he had a good point.  We now have this proposal system that will be part of the Delegate system.  (I am not sure about the details.)  The delegates will then vote on proposals.  In this way it is very much Democratic.

My concern is the people will not understand what all is possible in this watered down version of Democracy.  It opens up a lot of room for FUD.  People like Bitcoin because it doesn't change much.  It is secure.

I suggested an analogy where the network client itself be seen as the Constitution because the underlying business logic can not change without new releases.  So new releases might be seen as Amendments to the Constitution.  These are core rules which can not be changed by proposals.  Proposals are limited to variables that interact with the network.  It is more like voting for taxes and pay rates.

As a side note I understand there was a list posted about all the variables that can be changed via proposals.  Does anyone know where I can find the list?

Beyond Bitcoin [closed] / June 21 Dev Hangout + Bitshares update.
« on: June 28, 2014, 07:30:42 am »
An interesting show.  We get to hear Dan face some difficult discussion about his choice in voting method.

I'm finally caught up on all the shows so we'll be releasing these a bit quicker from here on out I suspect.

General Discussion / Bitshares videos worth sharing ?
« on: June 27, 2014, 05:16:21 am »
I am helping work on the Bitshares wiki.  There are a lot of Bitshares videos spread about.  The one central spot I've found is http://www.youtube.com/user/bitshares which I guess I'll break out a little description of each.  Do you guys have any other favorite Bitshares videos ?  Or any videos that are so out of date they might not be valuable?

Enjoy the dev hangout.  While the production quality remains low, the content is getting much better.  Do yourself a favor and don't leave the mortal plane without listening to Beyond Bitcoin Dev Hangouts.  You only get one life.  Make it count.

How can a voter know that Delegates are actually decentralized ?  Does a 3rd party need to do network analysis and then have that published with IPs claimed by candidates ?  There is a problem with economy of scale leading to centralization if the network has strong anonymity and rewards.  Is there any way to avoid economy of scale ?

Random Discussion / Article on problem solving.
« on: June 20, 2014, 07:19:19 am »
http://rs.io/2014/02/21/problem-solving.html

I found this very interesting and usually I find blog postings meh.  This is all about the science/art of problem solving.

Apparently known to programmers but not to me is the idea of "rubber ducking".  That is talking a problem to someone else can change perspective enough to bring about a solution.  I've noticed this in life.  It is called rubber ducking because the same effect could be had while talking to your rubber duck. (Need to get my childhood teddy bear out of the attic)

I haven't written anything truly challenging in years, but LETS GET SOME DAC TOOLKITS OUT THERE.

86
Hi.  I am going to try to make this fairly short.  Stan posted the original idea here https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=4986.msg65702#msg65702. Then Bytemaster went on to expand on this during the Beyond Bitcoin Community Dev Hangout at https://soundcloud.com/beyond-bitcoin-hangouts/mumble-06-14-2014-dan-larimer#t=10:22

After listening to this I was inspired.  No one has stepped up to partner with people so I thought I would.

My basic proposal is that anyone who wishes to have an interest in being a Delegate to tell me what they will do for Bitshares with the funds generated.  I would ask they pay for the hosting as a sign of their goodwill and intentions.  This will be anywhere from $12-$50 a month.  (I know $12 will work, but for a top-tier provider it will be more.)  I could be paid the hosting fee in cryptocurrencies or the partner could choose to pay for the server directly. I will also provide some explanation about what is going on and possibly a demonstration/Q&A via Skype/phone or similar technology.  I will definitely make myself available.  I have one other technical person who I will likely partner with and they have tentatively agreed. I may find others to increase coverage of the servers as I do not expect to be available 24/7. These technical partners will hopefully be as passionate about this stuff as I am.

Beyond the hosting bill, what I ask of my non-technical partner(s) is just a plan to help the Bitshares ecosystem along with a solid execution.  Present it to me either in private or publicly.  There are likely others who would be willing to partner with a non-technical person so it might be in your interest to post your proposal publicly.  I do expect to be paid for my work along with my partners, and most likely on a % basis.  This means the only necessary out of pocket expense is the hosting fee.  My goal is not to make a truckload of money, but I do feel compensation of some sort to be necessary. Just like I expect that the non-technical partner to make a profit.  However, the main thing here is I want to partner with someone who has vision and will execute that vision.  The %s are negotiable and I have not given it much thought.

So any thoughts/plans/proposals fire away !  Either here or in private. If any technical people want to offer up their services in this thread feel free !

General Discussion / About one (two?) of the faces of NXT.
« on: June 17, 2014, 11:37:20 pm »
I recall a thread somewhere on here where someone said that Bitshares needed a face.  I don't remember where they went with this but I recall pointing out NXT doesn't really have a face behind it and they pointed to NXT going to "payexpo".

So the guy who talked NXT community into paying his way to payexpo etc did this.

I'm sure the guy will claim he was hacked.  Bet on it.  ROFL.

General Discussion / ghash.io at 50%+ ?
« on: June 13, 2014, 11:42:36 am »

http://www.coindesk.com/cex-io-response-fears-of-51-attack-spread/

People have been talking about this in various places.  I am curious what others think ?  51% attack is always thrown around in 'what-if' scenarios but here we are.  Why is that pool so popular?  0% fees are always sketchy to me and point to ulterior motives. Is mining full of people who are so risk averse that they can't deal with the variance of being on a pool with 10% of the hashing power ?  (So they go with 50% of the hashing power to have a nice smooth payout?)

To me it sounds like we need to ship DPOS and fork BTC like yesterday.  I personally don't see any other solution.  Has anyone else in the space been working on the toolset to enable this ?  ;)

89

Does anyone think this hurts their property rights?

The idea is as a shareholder there would be some vote you would have to take part of every X time or your shares would be removed. This would also work great on top of air drops.  I think it'd make the system more responsive etc. Less likely for a minority to have too much power due to apathy of the majority.  In the end I think it could be a better proposition to those who wish to own a DAC.

I'm only partially trolling.

Thoughts ?

For immediate release ...

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=642854.new#new

Show the thread some love after it has been down low for awhile. Lets keep it high up and happy.

We need more people than Dan to interview.  Really.

Expanding public consciousness of decentralized services Beyond Bitcoin

Beyond Bitcoin is an effort to provide insights to the most innovative technologies and projects in the crypto space. We want to lower the barriers to entry by providing insights to the latest developments for a wider audience and help communities exchange perspectives. Beyond Bitcoin has two parts to it.

The first show is more of an informal meetup we call Beyond Bitcoin Dev Hangout. Usually we get an update from Daniel Larimer of Bitshares but then it is followed up by anyone who has a project in the space. This is where we need you guys. This is a call for any devs who are interested in talking about their project. This show is hosted on a Mumble server at 10am Central Standard Time every Saturday. We also invite anyone who wants to ask questions or participate in the hangout. Questions can be typed. At the end of the session, we clean it up, and publish it in the Public Domain for anyone else who might wish to use the material to build upon. If you would like to be interviewed, send us a message here on bitcointalk or find our subforum on bitsharestalk.org.  You can always just show up!

The second show is run by a real professional and is on the LTB network.  The "Beyond Bitcoin Show on the LTB Network" is hosted by Arthur F. Falls and can usually be scheduled more around the developer's time requirements. It is a more traditional one-on-one interview usually held on Skype.  Arthur's email is beyondbitcoinshow@gmail.com.  Arthur is a huge fan of crypto-technology and is a great interviewer.

Both shows can always be heard at beyondbitcoinshow.com

Outside of the 2 shows we would like to invite ANYONE who is interested in talking about this technology to the Beyond Bitcoin Mumble Server. This is the same server where the Dev Hangout is hosted. Currently we are trying to find the best time to schedule more informal hangouts to maximize participation.  The server can be used for community hangouts or "digital panels" where everyone can attend and one or more guests are being interviewed by the community. Contact fuznuts on bitsharestalk.org if you have any questions regarding the mumble server.
