Meta / Re: Should Invictus honor their community workers?
« on: November 17, 2013, 06:19:59 pm »
This could either be Invictus or fundraised on the forum itself.

I do want to mention, I just wanted to be a moderator to help out in the wild-west short term.  Nobody was cleaning spam, and forum sales were happening so fast it was confusing which posts were live or not so I wanted to change posts that were sold from [wts] to [SOLD]

At whatever point, please migrate me back to a normal user.  I don't have time to do the job justice.

BOUNTY – Adapt Open Source Armory Wallet to support Altcoin Protoshares

Lighthouse – Posted by Lighthouse – Anywhere

Job Description

Protoshares is a new bitcoin derived cryptocurrency from Invictus Innovations. It is unique among cryptocurrency because there is a private company who has put a social contract in place that when it releases the products on its roadmap (Bitshares, Domainshares, etc.), whomever holds Protoshares (PTS) will be given shares of the newly released product at a 1:1 ratio to their PTS holdings.

This means that instead of being a currency that trades on the merits of the currency or its network, it trades on the future value of the products that Invictus will deliver to whomever holds them. It is unique among coins in that it has a tangible reason to hold it, periodic and significant payouts of new cryptocurrency.

This unique value proposition and the fact that only 2 million will be mined has led to a very high price even only 12 days after the start of mining, and the adapted BitcoinQT client is insufficient for the task of securely storing. I have started a bounty which has a minimum value of 5BTC or 100PTS, and which might wind up being higher than that if I can convince some larger holders of PTS to contribute.

The most secure bitcoin wallet is http://www.bitcoinarmory.com, it is open source and supposedly not that difficult to convert to a bitcoin based altcoin. Protoshares at a technical level is the latest version of Bitcoin with a new proof of work and modified difficulty/block reward settings.

General Discussion / Re: Why I am no longer supporting Invictus-Innovations
« on: November 17, 2013, 01:32:57 am »
it doesn't matter who mines them it matters who holds them while they appreciate.  Most of the major miners out there must turn around and sell their PTS to cover their expense

That's where you're wrong. It DOES matter who mines them. Because if you get 10,000 small guys mining a bit and making some coin they'll stick around and support your project. If you get 10 guys sucking up all the resources with vast cloud mining pools you'll have nobody to support you. As soon as the financial opportunity dries up those 10 guys will dump their PTS and move on. You'll end up being the leader of a broken down crypto experiment that nobody cares about any more.

If you don't get the wide base of supporters in the beginning your project is doomed. I hope you figure out some way to make it work. Maybe on the next DAC you should focus all your efforts on trying to make it accessible to the millions of CPU miners at home who don't want to compete with botnets. Figure out a way to block cloud miners and botnets and you'll become the king of cryptos.

what do you think dumping means?
it means selling to other people: the new supporters

Two profound observations:

1.  We would love to please everybody.
2.  You can't please everybody.

Everybody has a different definition of "fair", usually meaning "what works best for them."

The momentum algorithm was the result of a lot of R&D and bounties to come up with a "more fair" solution and to achieve the goal of maximum decentralizationOur Prime Directive.  Maximum decentralization inherently means "benefit the little guys".

We will continue to search for better ways to achieve this goal and sponsor bounties to stimulate community research toward that end.

But this is an arms race.  People with great resources will always find a way to out-compete those who don't.  Every move we make will have counter moves.  We will then make counter-counter moves.

Because Distributed Autonomous Corporations are not incorruptible if they are not distributed and autonomous.

Centralization is the enemy of everything we stand for.
And fighting it is more important to us than personal wealth.

Please post the TX that seem to have resulted from a hack.  How long from the TX to your discovering?  Is your computer acting strangely in any other way, have you run a virus scan, etc?  Did you have a firewall up?

As much detail as you can give will help us figure out if there is anything actually wrong or if you just got unlucky.  Did you tell ANYONE that you had PTS on your computer?

there are some more in there but cant be bothered to filter them out right now, im in a bit of a shock

Someone who reads chinese or is familiar - Is there a chance he's listening to bad nodes and just needs a good connection?  Also whats up with this for the scrip public key

Mark, you should look into getting a dedicated device (I use a 10" netbook with wifi and bluetooth turned off at the system live with Ubuntu, like $220 from Amazon) to act as an offline wallet, and then you should switch to www.bitcoinarmory.com and run your online computer without spending keys.  Whenever you want to spend BTC you do the transaction on your online computer but instead of send you can only hit save which puts it on some sort of storage, you walk the usb stick or whatever over to the offline computer, the transaction shows up you click sign type in your password, it saves it to the usb stick, you walk it over to the online computer put the stick in and click the "broadcast transaction" button, select the TX from the storage and the TX is done.

If you keep the computers near each other its a two minute process and impossible to be hacked because there simply are no keys to recover.

What is exactly:

Quote
5) We reserve the right to release ProtoShares v2 that honors 100% of ProtoShares v1 with 100% of the money supply allocated.

ProtoShares is based upon the Bitcoin-Qt code base.   We may wish to 'upgrade it' in the future to support more features and this would be the upgrade path.

Does that mean that if you are holding Protoshares v1 when Protoshares 2 comes out, all Protoshares 2 will replace Protoshares 1 1:1 and no additional mining will be done on it?

BitShares PTS / Re: Protoshares Cloud Mining
« on: November 15, 2013, 11:35:05 pm »
I'd be interested - testing against other cloud providers.

Why are you interested in cloud miners if you're so against botnets?  Aren't cloud miners functionally doing the same thing as a botnet would to individual profits?

161
That is a great idea.  Will that becoming from Invictus?

BitShares PTS / Re: How many PTS do you have
« on: November 15, 2013, 10:06:03 pm »
I think it should be noted that most of the "professional miners" are normal people who rented a bunch of servers from amazon and played arbitrage between the prices and the value of PTS.  I would challenge you to find me a "professional miner" with a dedicated farm of computers in their basement mining PTS, I think most of the bulk is rental from the cloud.
Either way, it kills the interest level. On Nov. 5th I was all excited about this and looking forward to months of slow steady growth. Two weeks later it's all gone. The average guy at home has no chance and the interest level for me has plummeted. I figured all the new miners would be able to get a couple of thousand PTS to play around with. Instead, you have most guys with a few PTS (or none at all) and others hoarding tens of thousands and driving the diff up so high that nobody else can compete. Whatever. Have fun.

I'm out. I'll check back next year to see where this project is.

I totally agree with you, I just don't see how you prevent people from doing that.   If you don't require GPUs or powerful hardware than its easy and very cheap to rent cloud computing capacity.   I think the only way you could do this is if you had people register to be miners before they can participate in the system and have per individual caps.  Then you'd have botnets and cloud farms having to hire warm bodies to expand the number of human miner identities they can be maxing out.

Genuinely this is hard problem but I think we are making progress through experiments like PTS

It's not anyone's fault, it's just a fact that i missed the initial launch and with increasing difficulty over time i won't even be able to mine a hundred coins in a year :(

The amazing part (for me) was that it took less than 2 weeks. I figured there might be some mining opportunities here for a few months. As soon as the professional miners stepped in it was like that Southpark episode:

Lighthouse, have you sold them all?

Yes, sorry - I still have miners going but production is very much diminished, just selling now to cut costs.

Also there is lots of buying behind the scenes going on, lots of people who had been trying to lowball on the price expecting a correction are now chasing the higher price to get in.  Everyone I'm selling to in bulk is buying to hold because of the value proposition.
