General Discussion / Re: drltc's Trustee Technical Discussion Thread

Have N metronodes that take turns in a deterministic manner.  Have block timestamps be deterministic.

Now all attacks must involve collusion.

Just trying to catch up on this development. I get that if you had 100 or so metronodes scattered around the world then this would still be safe, but am i understanding you correctly that you expect these people to have powerful servers ready and waiting to verify a block when its there turn? And not get paid for doing that?

How about if only the top 1000 nodes by balance were allowed to verify blocks and in order for a block to be verified you would have to have agreement from a randomly chosen second node. That way you have the proof of stake and mining.  It would also be difficult and expensive for an attacker to have both of the randomly picked nodes.

these 1000 or 10000 or whatever number would be paid for verifying the block. They would not want to join a pool as it would mean handing over all of their coins to the pool. Like you said bitcoin is paying a fortune for security. Like this we could pay less, still be secure and there are more interesting ways to make money from bitshares than just speculation and mining.

Forgive me if this has already been suggested i have limited time to try and keep up to date on all the projects i see a future for.

I was going to add this onto another thread but the more i thought about it the more value i realized it has.

Most long standing investors in the crypto space are time limited (they have other jobs, business to run). As investors they scan as much as they can from the forums and then try to follow those projects that their experience says has most potential to make them a profit. I am one of these types of investors, we are typically older 40's and have already made money which we want to invest.

OK, so if you didn't see the relevance here it is. Every large crypto investor has bought a significant stake in NXT, Mastercoin, Bitshare's and they will in Etherium. From all thats out there they are the clear best bets. Now bitshares has a true advantage over the competition here because anyone who honers the social contract will automatically be getting these high net worth individuals invested in their DAC. If you own a part of something you will show it some interest and if you believe the proposition you will buy a greater stake.

With new ideas popping up every day vying for attention i think this is a benefit you need to put some promotional support behind.

Any one with agree?

Great, i like it, but what i don't get is why do you all keep letting each other know where your flaws lie? I know the "right" answer is that you don't care who wins so long as its the best outcome, but lets be honest its human nature to want everyone to do well but its also human nature to be competitive and what to win. In Fact its one of the reasons I have put moor investment into you than the competitors, I see you are competitive.

So back to my original question, why not let the competition fail? and why not keep your good ideas under your hat until launch?

We are loosing out on investment at the moment, i know that with certainty because i haven't invested any of my PTS or BTC since http://q39.qhor.net/ags/pts.txt has been down. Ive tried to find another one but they all seem to be incorrect.

Im sure that im not the only one who is reluctant to invest without seeing the return and doesn't have the time and or skills to find the current rate.

Please can someone from Invictus tell me/us where a correct and easy to read rate for Ags to PTS and BTS is?

General Discussion / Re: Do BitShares need an interest rate?
« on: January 30, 2014, 05:27:57 pm »
Not to get too 'meta' but how should the interest rate on the interest rate BitAsset be set?   I am thinking it could be fixed at 0% because it isn't actually trying to maintain a peg against anything else.

I agree, the reason you would hold bitgold would be because you think its price is going to go up against your local currency and maybe as a hedge against cripto currencies being used as a store of wealth. Not for the 5% earning.

Its very difficult to predict the response to something that hasn't been done before. I know you were thinking about releasing a group of bitassets or/and currencies to start. Would it be better to start with one and see how the market reacts? Since bitusd is the most important i would make the first an asset not a currency? I know you have the test version but until people are sweating about losing real dollars their actions will be different .

204
Why 5%? In differing financial climates, would there be a need to alter this rate? For example, if the prevailing growth rate is 10% year on year as in some countries, then 5% might seem low.

The market will automatically adjust the premium/discount on the BitAsset based upon whether or not the interest rate is currently too high or too low.   In reality it will already function as a "base rate +5%" because if we set the interest rate to 0% then the BitAsset would literally be like holding cash and would then be discounted relative to BankUSD which paid interest.

BitUSD should trade like a 30 year treasury earning a fixed 5%. It will go up and down in value as the current interest rate changes.  While the current interest rate is 'stable' its value will also be stable.   Which means as long as the interest rate doesn't change while you hold your BitUSD position you will earn 5%.

Hmmm.. My brain is struggling with this a little, but, if 1 bitusd was worth 90 cent because the market valued it at that for whatever reason. I then invest in 1 btusd at a cost of 90 cents which happens to be the equivalent of 100 bitshares. Then my dividend would be 5 bitshares which is still 5% and is not affected by the fact that 1 bitusd is worth less than 1 usd.

What am i missing?

The event went very well, though I had some sound issues with my brief announcement about taking the snapshot of AGS and PTS on Feb 28th... here are some comments we received...

"BitShares appears to be the biggest company at this conference"  - based upon the fact that we had 20+ people working with us and wearing our shirts.

I would start talking with one person by the snack bar line and in just a few minutes people would be leaving the line to circle around to hear what I had to say.  I could draw a crowd of people anywhere I went.

We made some great connections including with Reggie Middleton who has created bitcoin currency swap contracts.  He loves what we are doing and is going to help us get on TV and promote BitShares X.    http://www.youtube.com/user/BoomBustBlog

We met with Charles Evans and made great strides in securing our legal and accounting practices to keep us in compliance with all laws and avoid potential legal issues.

Thanks for the update, was the debate between you, nxt, mastercoin and etherium recorded?

That should be online at the end of this week on lets talk bitcoin. There's a small video online to give you an impression https://www.facebook.com/officialbitshares

woo hoo... thats what we wanted...Thanks. I would be very greatfull if you could update this post when the full version is up

Its true we live in a low interest world at the moment but for most of my life you have been able to earn moor than 5% in the bank.

I guess you couldn't peg it to a central bank base rate plus 5% because that would require some centralisation?

If you do fix it at 5% can this be changed at a later date without a hard fork?

General Discussion / Re: Introducing Ethereum

Oh, Bytemaster, if only thousands of people could hear your voice saying that... ;)

In the Mastercoin / Ethereum debate last Friday I introduced BitShares X as allowing people to earn 5% or more on Ether and Mastercoin ;)
Was that discussion recorded?

bump, anyone have a link to the recording?

A lot of discussion on which version 2 to back, but, even if Ethereum is better. Wont it make better economical sense to use the bitshares social contract for distribution and then start a new ethereum block for ever new DAC?

Am i missing somthing?
