General Discussion / Re: how about to pay salary to committee members?
« on: January 15, 2016, 01:23:10 pm »
yunbi proxy + bitcrab voting power are far less than being able to control the committee.

enough incentive already? why there are still 3 empty slots in the committee?

Not because there are no incentives but probably because there aren't as many people with enough knowledge that can fit that position. Or maybe shareholders think so and don't vote whoever is trying to get in.

I mean, if someone has the knowledge and cares about BitShares I assume they would go for it. I assume everyone wants to protect their investment. I might be wrong though, but there might not be enough people with the knowledge/skills needed to hold that position.

I don't know about the Chinese community but I think you're the only one on the committee? I would like to see more Chinese make part of it in hope there would be more communication and debate. As well as having more influence on Chinese exchanges since there's where most of the money seems to be.

Milestone 1 - HARDFORK CODE COMPLETE
$5000 to implement the hardworking changes requested. These changes will be complete around January 15th, but the hard fork will not take effect until the end of February.

I know there are always delays but you on a good track to achieve this first milestone?

General Discussion / Re: Reasons for Lowering Fees
« on: January 15, 2016, 11:57:27 am »
Set a special kind of account. User pays a fee to get it similar to lifetime membership. Has extremely low fees. Only allows small transactions. That allows for micro payments. Still can be used to spam the network though.

Maybe add some kind of restriction where those type of accounts can perform more than X amount of transactions per second. 1 per second seems fine by now. Only way to spam the network would be to have 1000s of accounts of that type and have them all perform transactions at the same time but if members have to pay a fee to register then that makes the attack way way more difficult. No one will pay a fee of 5k bts or 10k bts thousands of times.

This also doesnt make life time membership obsolete since it still has more advantages like no restriction on the amount of bts per transaction, referral program, etc members could even have them both on the same account
This is interesting.

That's very interesting.
It can be easily implemented (I hope) and can be easily explained to the user.
It's perhaps not practicable.
From my personal experience, an average Joe doesn't want to pay a fee in advance if don't know how much will spend on fees in the future. People intend to spend less money now and care less about costs in the future, that's why installment loans have market.
A common user of a bank will be always charged a fee if she withdraw from other bank's ATM, but a premium user won't be charged since she has already paid a higher annual fee or similar. So rich people are more likely to pay for a premium, but actually they care less about fees in micro payments. On opposite, the ones who have more needs on micro payments are less likely to pay for a premium in advance.

But this would be directed to services and not users though.. If people registered an account through that service what really could happen would be the service creating a "sub-account" with the same proprieties and share some of it's permissions to the user could use it. That way you have user's benefiting from this without having to pay the fee. Only micropayment services would pay for this, not the users

General Discussion / Re: Mt Gox > Cryptsy - Time for BTS?
« on: January 15, 2016, 11:51:34 am »
BitShares is still not ready to deal with this and I urge the community to help come up with the plan. I suggested exchanges having multi signature accounts in order to monitor each other

Please give your input.

If BTS had fiat on-ramps, I would spend $10,000 of my own money right now to buy ads proclaiming BitShares to be Bitcoin's successor. Without fiat on-ramps, the whole thing is irrelevant because we are stuck in Bitcoin's inferno.

Let's quote this for future reference  :P

I somewhat agree with @btswildpig in the sense that Bitcoin can and might always be a store of value. But tell me, what will happen when all these payments systems that are trying to implement Bitcoin realize that it will take hours or an undefined amount of time to make a transaction? What happens if Bitcoin starts to see more adoption and people realize it's just useless to buy stuff with? (assuming nothing changes till then, which I honestly think it's plausible since it's so hard to reach a consensus)

Then all those business and payment systems will have to turn to the best option. Bitcoin can still have a high marketcap and be very valuable, however some of it's money will eventually flow into the next big opportunity for payments systems for example, something that can scale.

I don't believe it will be useless, but some money will flow onto the next option

Incentive to be committee members is already there. The chance to make the best decisions for BitShares and your investment.

It's pretty much true obviously, but he's been saying it/talking down BTC for ages.

Here he is telling Max Wright similar stuff 16 months ago.

https://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/bitcoin-really-fragile-bitcoin-core-developer-mike-hearn/

Let's get Mike to code for BitShares  :P

I assume he's a developer on 'Decred', the new crypto-currency Bitcoin developers are creating that pays 10% of each block subsidy to a development organization.

Oh he's part of the Decred pack!

Well, now I'm really really curious about Bitcoin this next year. Hopefully people start to realize there are better options and we see some diversification. This, assuming bitcoin continues being chocked by its own community.

wow. Thats a stunning read.

I enjoyed it too. Im not too deep into Bitcoin polemics and politics atm but if what he said is true then things definitely don't look any good. How can they expect Paypal (upvoted on r/bitcoin atm) to use bitcoin when transaction might take indefinite time to be confirmed + the potential of reverting transactions lol doesn't even make sense.

Let's get Mike to code for BitShares  :P

Technical Support / Re: How do I get my interest on long held assets
« on: January 15, 2016, 12:08:54 am »
No idea on the bond market's ETA. Its the most eagerly anticipated feature around here, but it seems to have been shelved for now in favour of MAS.

I'm not sure about that. I think that's the idea most people got (me too at first) but I don't think it's true. We've seen the community express a deep desire for Prediction Markets which we already seem to have (we just need a better interface) and Bond Markets.

Also don't forget Maker. I'd say after stealth one of the next features would be Maker or Bond Markets. Meanwhile we can use prediction markets to bet on that  :P

Random Discussion / Mike Hearn:Why has Bitcoin failed?
« on: January 14, 2016, 11:03:02 pm »
Why has Bitcoin failed? It has failed because the community has failed. What was meant to be a new, decentralised form of money that lacked “systemically important institutions” and “too big to fail” has become something even worse: a system completely controlled by just a handful of people. Worse still, the network is on the brink of technical collapse. The mechanisms that should have prevented this outcome have broken down, and as a result there’s no longer much reason to think Bitcoin can actually be better than the existing financial system.

https://medium.com/@octskyward/the-resolution-of-the-bitcoin-experiment-dabb30201f7#.uygu5tg3v

Some customers contacted Chris earlier today asking why our bitcoin payouts didn’t execute …

The issue is that it’s now officially impossible to depend upon the bitcoin network anymore to know when or if your payment will be transacted, because the congestion is so bad that even minor spikes in volume create dramatic changes in network conditions. To whom is it acceptable that one could wait either 60 minutes or 14 hours, chosen at random?

Some even mention crypto/blockchain 2.0 and wallet and exchange development. I did this list so we can try and contact them to see if they're willing to develop for BitShares.
