Technical Support / Re: Import Existing Delegate Into New Server
« on: August 28, 2014, 06:54:19 pm »
Hi,

Open the Windows client and use the 'wallet_dump_private_key' command with the following syntax for every account you have: wallet_dump_private_key <account name>

Make sure to write down which private key goes with which account name so you don't get the next step messed up.

Very important: If you do not do these next steps, then you will be missing blocks by creating blocks from two different nodes. This is very bad and creates forks, people will likely vote you out as delegate. You can proceed to setting up your delegate account while re-downloading the block chain on your windows client and/or while syncing the block chain. Make sure to delete the wallet folder for your Windows wallet before setting up your delegate account though.

How to set back up your Windows client
1. Close out of the BitsharesX client
2. Delete this folder: C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\BitShares X\wallets\default
^ Note: replace UserName with your Windows user name; AppData is a hidden folder so you need to type it in manually or turn on the viewing of hidden files and folders ^
3. Open the BitsharesX client, create a new wallet password, and wait for the block chain to finish downloading. Instead of creating a new account, just go to console to do the following.
4. Import your private key to your NON DELEGATE account(s) using the 'wallet_import_private_key' command in the console with the private key(s) you copied earlier using the following syntax: wallet_import_private_key <private key>
5. Re-scan the block chain to retrieve all of your transactions and to show your proper balance using the following command in console: wallet_rescan_blockchain

On your delegate server import the private key for only your delegate account using the 'wallet_import_private_key' command with the following syntax: wallet_import_private_key <private key>

You should be good to go then.. you have your delegate account on your server and personal account on your computer. :)

Well, thanks for the kind words Gamey.. I am having fun learning about Bitshares and how it works too. :)

I added a lot of extra info to the OP, and added an extra troubleshooting step of replacing your wallet file with one that is automatically backed up from the client when you make a new account or update to a new version of the client software.

ok coinhoarder you have edit access to wiki.  Thanks for the effort you're putting forth.  It is obvious that Bitshares needs more documentation and stuff like this helps.  You see a spot that is lacking and fill it.  Then looking back you can be part of history :)

Writers who also understand everything are a hard breed to come by and gainfully employed.  So anyone who can "sorta write" but understands this stuff is a huge asset to BItshares ecosystem IMO.  Bitshares is even far more complicated documentation wise than most projects.

Thanks :)

Trying my best to help out, it's the least I can do as a delegate.. trying to pull my weight in this community.

I will get it updated after I make a couple edits.

I'm not sure I see the point. Sure, we may get some new fans (Litecoin users), but wouldn't this just make competition for BitsharesX, and give Litecoin users a half stake in that competition for doing absolutely nothing? I don't think it would be fair to snapshot participants, or even people whom have bought since then.

Forking BitsharesX at this point before the user base is mature seems like shooting yourself in the foot, and would reduce liquidity on both centralized exchanges and in the bitasset marketplace.

On top of that, all of the Litecoin users could just dump on the market and it would be a risky investment for anyone that isn't a AGS/Protoshare/Litecoin investor. As it is now with BitsharesX, everyone has invested something to get their stake. Whether it be investing BTC/PTS in AGS, providing CPU processing power for (or investing in) PTS, or purchasing their BTSX on the free market, this all provides incentive for people not to dump BTSX on the market for less than what they put in and upholds the price. If you make a fork and give 50% of the money supply away for free, this incentive would not be as strong for the 50% who got it for free.

BitsharesX is too small right now to try to fork the the community IMO.

Did anyone read this? I feel like I had some good points... Replace Litecoin in the post with Bitcoin... Ripple.. Stellar... I still feel the same way. This is a business and creating competition for BitsharesX and giving a group of people equity for free is not a good idea at this time.

I have still been updating mine though.. If bm could shed some light on when it is OK to stop doing so that would be nice.
the 1h-average takes over .. let me see .. after an hour or so :-)

Lol. Makes sense ;)

I guess I can save my pennies now!

Technical Support / Re: Incorrect transaction displays in 0.4.8
« on: August 28, 2014, 05:15:26 am »
I have just done my first transactions today, but am noticing a couple of weird things with the display of Recent Transactions in client 0.4.8.

1. After my first transfer, the transaction kept displaying as pending (>10 minutes), even after it had gone through the block chain and credited to the receiving account. Only when I quit the client and re-opened, did it show as complete.

2. I have one transaction that is appearing twice when I am on the Overview Screen, showing as completed exactly the same time (I only did one transaction, and my balance is correct). When I click into the specific account and look at the transactions there however, it appears correctly, showing just once.

Anyone experience this and know why?

Sounds like a couple bugs. I wouldn't worry about it if you aren't missing any funds.

581
thanks! nice summary.

No problem.  :D

I just made some edits.. Step 2 of the "what to do if funds are missing" will also likely fix the following problems:
  • If you cannot connect to any peers
  • It says 'Not Connected' at the bottom
  • If you can connect but can not sync

So, I have changed this to a general troubleshooting and back up method thread.

This is going to pretty much be my answer to all problems... lol.... because it has fixed all problems I've had thus far, including the one you are describing.

See this: https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=7768.0

Backup wallets using all 3 methods, then skip to step 2 under the troubleshooting procedures section. That should do the trick.

583
nice summary ...
would you mind putting it somewhere on the wiki?

Sure I can do that

Actually.. I can't figure out how to edit it.  >:(

I do not see any json or wallet.dat file in the wallets folder in appdata]\BitshareX folder

here is a screenshot of the target directory I am trying to recover from: http://imgur.com/wZMNvqI

Any suggestions?

Thanks,,,

Close client

Copy the old "default" folder and replace it with the current one

Open client

Rescan block chain
