General Discussion / Is there a new "Social Consensus" for the new BTS?
« on: October 30, 2014, 02:17:04 pm »
If third parties want to use the BitShares toolkit, do we still plan to have the social consensus in place recommending airdrops to BTS holders? If so, what is the new recommended percentage? Or will the social consensus just be for AGS and PTS holders?

General Discussion / For 10% dilution, how much are we really talking?
« on: October 21, 2014, 06:42:42 pm »
If the dilution cap per year is set to 10%, does this mean that the first year will see 250 million BTS dilution, the next year 275 million more BTS, and so on? Or does this just mean up to 10% is possible, but not necessary?

And for how long would this continue? Could we expect a total supply of 6,484,356,150 BTS in 10 years (based on compounding 10% for 10 years starting at 2.5 billion)?

I'm all for dilution, but over-dilution frightens me a bit. Hoping I'm misunderstanding something (burn rate offsetting it, perhaps?)

General Discussion / Do you plan to sell some BTS in the next bubble?
« on: October 21, 2014, 01:29:29 pm »
I feel like the next bubble for BTS will be significant. As in, if everything is as awesome as has been teased, we could see an absolutely absurd rise in price in an extremely short time. But from looking at the historical chart, I feel like I should have sold some during the first bubble over $100 million cap, and increased my position on the fall.

But how do you call the top of the bubble? How do you know a quick fall is nothing more than a bear trap, and you sell some at a price never to be seen again? What if the price does rise exponentially higher than anyone is anticipating, if say an announcement really were that powerful?

Is it better safe than sorry, if you truly believe in BitShares long-term? Hold to the bitter end? Or risk some for that chance to build up your BTS base?

General Discussion / What's the status on yield?
« on: October 21, 2014, 01:07:46 pm »
Are we still expecting 5-10%? How about in the future, if/when there is huge demand for BitUSD (or any other asset), will a decent yield still be possible? I read somewhere that the new short system that was implemented had the result of increasing collateral while decreasing yield, but I'm wondering how much an effect is anticipated.

Just curious how much BTSX will need to make me before I can diversify it in the future and live solely off the yield  8).

General Discussion / 5 million BTSX sell wall
« on: October 16, 2014, 05:02:49 pm »
There's a wall of over 5 million BTSX over on the Chinese Yunbi exchange at 0.18 CNY...roughly $0.029 each or $148,000 worth.

Insane.

I was hoping I'd be able to keep my BitUSD shorts open for a few months...but hot damn is there a lot of Chinese sell pressure lately. At the rate we're going, I'm fairly sure all my shorts will be wiped soon. Fingers crossed...

Some super exciting news in the next few days would be much appreciated, lol.

General Discussion / Will demand for BitShares Music drive BTSX price?
« on: October 14, 2014, 03:07:46 pm »
Alright, so I'm thinking: say I have $50 to invest right now, into either BTSX at a market cap of 55 million or NOTE at a market cap of ~2.5 million (per tonyk in another thread). As demand for BitShares Music picks up, won't this inevitably drive the price of BTSX, since BitShares Music makes use of BitUSD for purchases, etc? Also, hype for BitShares Music (especially as the presale draws to a close) will probably simultaneously be a driver for BTSX hype, a beautiful synergy-type effect. I see huge potential in PeerTracks and the like, but I still feel that the overall gains will be felt by BTSX as this is where all the value essentially funnels into. Thoughts?

I may go 50/50 just to see what happens, lol...

From a BitcoinTalk thread earlier today:

Quote from: BitJohn

The proto-shares Bitshares thing for us was a mess. I mean snapshots were a new concept at the time. Cryptsy was hit by the wall street journal article rush 5000 new customers a day at that time. Support was swamped we could not hire fast enough! When we were contacted the time frame to implement was just to short. The only fair thing we decided we could do was announce that we would not be participating and that folks would have to withdraw.

I finally met Daniel Larimer at inside Bitcoin in NY where he broke it all down and I expressed to him that if only we could have gotten together sooner...

So love the concept of Bitshares! But as you can see we have yet to add it as an option since we could not credit the customers from the first snapshot.

I mean should we at this point? I get requests for bitshares and all the variations we just have not felt right adding them after the missed snapshot.

*One additional note if your a developer to properly integrate a massive coin/wallet change and ensure security we need more than 24/48 hours.

Should we try to get them to add Bitshares?

General Discussion / How fast are BTSX burned?
« on: September 30, 2014, 04:00:01 pm »
The way I understand it, a portion of BTSX are burned by delegates as a form of dividend to BTSX holders by decreasing supply, correct? Is there any way to determine how fast this burn rate will be? For example, coinmarketcap has us at 1,999,883,512 BTSX right now, meaning 116,488 BTSX have been burnt to date. Is this accurate? Is there any way to guesstimate how many BTSX will be in existence after say 1 year? 3 years? 10 years?

General Discussion / How high can she go?
« on: September 30, 2014, 12:55:58 pm »
Alright, so I'm thinking to myself that Bitcoin aims to be the world's currency, while BitShares' approach is much broader: to be the world's investment (more or less). Based on this alone, isn't the market BitShares is trying to grab much greater than Bitcoin's, and thus the potential future market cap much, much higher? As in, BitShares seeks to take down banks, stock exchanges, forex, gold markets, USD, etc etc etc...is a trillion dollar market cap reasonable say even 20 years into the future, considering the vast sums of wealth contained in these markets??

Am I delusional??

General Discussion / Newbie Shorting Questions
« on: September 19, 2014, 06:03:19 pm »
Hi all,

When shorting, am I right in thinking that theoretically the best you can do is come close to doubling your BTSX? Say I have 5,000 BTSX and short all of it at a given price (say 30 BTSX/BitUSD, so a short of $166.66 BitUSD), and BTSX someday soars to $10 per BTSX (0.1 BTSX/USD), would I then be able to cover with only 16.66 BTSX, netting me 5,000 BTSX held as collateral + 4,983.34 BTSX released from the short = 9,983.34 BTSX?

Also, I think I'm getting confused by the collateral part -- if I have 5,000 BTSX, can I short this full amount, or can I only short half of it because the other half is needed to cover collateral?

Appreciate any input.

General Discussion / BTSX Price Getting Spanked by CNY
« on: September 17, 2014, 02:30:32 pm »
I'm watching the BTC38 exchange for BTSX/CNY, and it's looking kind of rough. Buy support looks to be minimal, while huge walls are forming from 0.2 CNY and downward. I've seen a few walls over nearly 900,000 BTSX appearing at 0.2 and below. Is this correlated with the recent drop in BTC? People becoming impatient over lack of exciting BTSX news recently? Will we continue the downtrend below 0.18 and cause me to get margin called? Is it a concern that over 80% of our volume is directly from CNY as opposed to BTC? Am I being overly concerned with the moment-to-moment price and need to get back to work (lol)? This feels like a pivotal make-or-break moment for crypto right now...

Discuss.

General Discussion / Official Hype Thread
« on: September 08, 2014, 07:55:52 pm »
A concept as revolutionary as BitShares deserves some hype. I for one am expecting it to overtake Bitcoin before the end of 2015 and Bytemaster to become president of the new world order made possible via DPOS technology. All unrealistic hopes, prayers, and seizure-inducing gifs are welcome here.

ALL ABOARD!!!

General Discussion / How can we short BitUSD?
« on: September 08, 2014, 01:43:06 am »
I've been trying to short BitUSD for the past few days now, but I'm finding it impossible to stay above the peg while at the same time attracting bidders. All the asks below me get filled until the peg moves lower, making it very hard to fill a short. I heard mention of being able to short below the peg if you pay some fees, but I'm not seeing any options for this. Am I missing anything obvious?

General Discussion / Is this the time to buy BitUSD?
« on: August 29, 2014, 01:51:10 pm »
So I'd like to shelter some of my BTSX against the current drop in price, so I'm thinking I would want to buy BitUSD. However, I'm seeing BitUSD currently trading for about $0.029 per BTSX (34 BTSX per BitUSD), whereas the current market price is about $0.021 (0.00004250 BTC per BTSX), which is a pretty significant spread. It almost seems more beneficial to cash out into BTC at this point, with BitUSD having such a significant discount. Thoughts?

General Discussion / How big a threat is the SEC?
« on: August 26, 2014, 12:47:37 pm »
While doing my usual perusal of "anti-Bitshares" posts on the forums, one remark caught my eye. Some are of the opinion that the SEC will be ready to crack down on Bitshares as soon as it grows large enough to catch notice, due to illegal securities trading. My thought had been that since Bitshares is more of a "prediction market" in that the underlying assets are not truly being bought or sold, that this would not be a problem. However, I am not well versed in securities law nor am I sure that I entirely understand what is being bought or sold in these prediction markets, so I would definitely like to hear some thoughts on this matter from those more knowledgeable than I. Is the SEC ban hammer a threat?
