He's such a good speaker and a brilliant face for Bitcoin. I wonder what he thinks about BitShares?

General Discussion / Re: Bitcoin at $330 ?

Its an old World of Warcraft meme.  I was comparing the bitcoin seller (now dubbed 'the bearwhale') with 25k coins on the ask to a boss that everyone needed to attack.

In World of Warcraft a large team of players (a 'guild') would need to work together to defeat a boss.  Such a group was referred to as a 'raid'.

There is a famous video from around 2005 or so where a raid group is fighting a dragon, Onyxia, one of the major challenges at the time.

Several of the phrases that the raid leader says in the video turned into famous memes.

"More DoTs":  A DoT or 'damage over time' spell is something that the players would be able to cast on the boss.  The raid leader is calling for more DoTs to be cast on the boss, providing sustained damage over time.

"50 dkp minus":  When the boss is defeated, the group would have to divvy up its treasure.  However, the treasure would be in the form of maybe 4 or so items, whereas at the time a group of 40 people would need to collaborate to take down the boss.

The standard system for handling this was for a leader to track the participation of members of their guild over time, giving out "dragon kill points" or dkp to participants.  Thus, a player might participate in ten boss kills over the course of a month, and gain dkp each time, and then once they had enough, they would spend their dkp to win one of the items awarded for killing the boss, usually through an auction system.  (Players would bid dkp on the item they wanted, and the highest bidder would be given the item and dkp would be deducted from their total).

The "50 dkp minus" meme comes from the fact that in the video, the leader was threatening the team members with a 50 dkp penalty if they messed up.

Hopefully that made some sense. :D

Have any guilds tried to turn dkp into a ctypto currency? User issued assets could work pretty well for this sort of thing.

Ha, that's actually quite a clever name. I assume they have gone for it due to it being a play on the words "banks" and "manx". People from the Isle of Man are called manx and they even have their own language. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manx_people

It is silly to me that we have conversations like this about bilshares...

Yet it is unpopular to direct similar critiques toward ethereum.  Only difference?  Ethereum is worse imho...Is it divisive to call something that looks from the outside to be a scam--a scam?

Why is it ok if the scam is elaborate and draws in large crowds of unknowing people with only a "promise" of what is to come?  These are things worth considering in my opinion.

I think anytime we call something a scam/ponzi etc we have to justify that accusation and spell out exactly why we think that is the case. If you only say: "Ethereum is a scam" there will probably be lots of people who will disagree with you. But, if you say "I think Ethereum could be a scam because they have made lots of promises but have so far failed to deliver on them. If and when they deliver on these promises then I will no longer consider it a scam." then there will be far fewer people that might have a problem with that.

This news feels like a bummer, but when I think about it:
  • Them picking NXT would be truly insulting
  • They fight legal issues while BTSX breaks down borders
  • DACs will prevail, and that's why they're not really a competitor
    • Plot twist: Byrne already knows this

I'm not necessarily here for DPOS or a specific DAC. I'm here because BTS will be the best DAC launchpad, and DACs are the future.

What about Ethereum? Hate to burst your bubble, but Ethereum has a WAY greater potential for being the best DAC launchpad considering the amount of funding and momentum behind it....

Sure it has potential, but they haven't launched anything yet. They haven't even decided on a mining algorithm and here we are already running the first DAC and multiple other DACs on the horizon. The longer they delay the more momentum and funding we gain.

It's so quiet... Price is down a bit  :(   Has anyone heard any news?

No news yet. Think our price is down a bit, check out counterparty. Seems they are settling out. Perhaps people are starting to wonder what exactly this announcement means for their value.

I was very tempted to buy some XCP yesterday evening when the price was at $4.50 and running away. My past experience in this area has taught me that any time I am desperate to buy into something that very second based on price movements alone, it is almost definitely the very worst time to buy it.

How would the DAC make money? These IFTTT (if this then that) services are free I think (someone correct me if I am wrong). I don't think anyone would want to use this service for usual web stuff if they had to pay for it when they could use the existing ones that are already free.

Where this may work though is for IFTTT services specifically within BitShares and between different DACs. example:

If n people that I follow on PeerTracks purchase an artistcoin
Then purchase x amount of same artistcoin

or

If daily Google searches for BTSX crosses threshold y
Then sell any artistcoin owned that have not received payouts for x days for BitUSD
Then buy BTSX with BitUSD

Is there a Music client?

Or other clients I need to have?

Not yet. These will come out some time in the future.

The amount of shares you have in the BTSX DAC is the amount of BTSX you own. If you own 1 BTSX then that means your "share" of the BTSX DAC is 1/2,000,000,000.

However, because BTSX is deflationary due to the ability of delegates to burn a percentage of their pay this means they are destroying BTSX and your "share" of the DAC is always going up. So that 1/2,000,000,000 would now be ~1/1,999,969,829 due to the amount of BTSX that have currently been burned so far.

If you wish to cash in then you would sell your BTSX on an exchange or to a friend etc just as you would sell an amount of Bitcoins.

I dunno if keeping it on BTER is a good idea (the MGOX scare).  Might be extreme but don't really want to have any rsik with future shares.

Bter has daily interest you can claim on your coins which is cool, but yeah much safer to keep the wallet secured yourself. I've lost track of how many exchanges have gone down over the years.
