My god that was an awesome interview... I completely agree with you on everything.

need.
If bitshares can solve some real problems, then there will be some needs and bitshare has value.

The fail of bitshares 1.0 is because it failed to solve any problem.  Let us see whether bitshares 2.0 will or not.

Um, actually...

Nice list, I haven't seen it passed around before. What happened to atomic cross chain trading? If it's possible I think that would have been the road to go down as opposed to one chain to rule them all.

Only account upgrades do vest for 90 days. Fees are paid within 20 minutes I think

I don't see why referral fees for upgraded accounts would need to vest either.  Assuming I'm not missing something, any vesting will diminish the effectiveness of the program, so I hope the concept is completely removed so we can start it off on the right foot instead of generating negative buzz and having to vote to fix it later anyway.

What's the sybil attack here?  If someone wants to create tons of fake accounts, pay the membership fees, and then get back 80% of his own money with the other 20% going to the network, I say be my guest!

I still can't see any reason to introduce vesting into this.

I couldn't agree more. It would be a different story if the referrer was getting 100% commissions and free transactions thereafter but with 20% going to the network, I can't think of any way this could be exploited. In fact, I'm a vendor myself and have many affiliates. I do payouts every 30 - 60 days depending on my refund policy. Once the transactions passes the refund threshold I cut their cheque. With a blockchain, refunds and chargebacks are a non-issue. If anything, that unique feature should be utilized to its full extent in the form of "instant" payouts. Making a sale would be like finding a block when mining.

I believe the reasoning had something to do with a sybil attack. Not sure.

Instead of number of referrals, I think actual amount of referral fees earned would be a good measure of how much they are benefiting Bitshares.

Yup, that's what Lucky means. I think the reason there is so much confusion around this program is because very few people here understand how an actual referral program works. It's 100% performance based just like most every other referral program in existence.

Speaking of referral fees, my understanding is that there will be a vesting period.  Can anyone explain why this would be necessary?   Maybe I'm being really dense here, but I just can't think of a scenario where a referral system in which referral fees are paid out of funds collected from the referred user can be gamed.

Yeah exactly. Originally they wanted to set vesting to a year so I don't know what the final number will be. If it's a year the referral program is DOA. I say go for two months vesting MAX. Instant payouts if possible.

On the other hand, if Bitshares was to pay a referral fee for each new user regardless of whether they buy a membership or transact on the network, then yes, in that case I can see the system getting gamed left and right.  But not the way it's currently proposed.  What am I missing here?

Nothing. I've been pushing for this model for over a year.

I need to think about this more but you may be onto something here. A referrer is like a miner, only they're doing actual work to grow the network without costing it anything. I would definitely give my vote to those provably growing the network. Also, the idea of a ledger to keep track of referrer performance is good. I don't think it should be in the wallet but bitsharesblocks.com could probably easily add it.

EDIT: I would also suggest that with POS, growing market cap is one of the best things you can do to secure the network. With POW, security is about computing power but with POS most attack vectors are based on market cap. The higher the cap, the more secure the network.

Does anyone have a screenshot of the trading/exchange screen? I don't have time to import my wallet at the moment to check it out.

Just create a new account. The base token is CORE not BTS so you can play around with it without any worry.

General Discussion / Re: What, exactly, constitutes a good platform?
« on: September 29, 2015, 03:49:04 am »
So the question is, what type of platform do you want graphene to be? Who is your target audience, the primary purchasers you want to make graphene customers? Why are they your target?

That's a really difficult question because the utility a blockchain offers is still mostly unknown. The best you can do is open Graphene up to creative capital and let it fly free. Eventually someone will figure that question out by process of trial and error. I think most developers in this space (cough ethereum) are trapped in a fantasy that they will create the blockchain that takes over the world and become trillionaires. I doubt it's going to play out like that for anyone. Similar to how the founders of Wordpress have not benefited from the millions of people creating individual websites. Many of those people are probably much wealthier than the core developers.

This is a great question Stan and I'm glad you're asking it. I think we can further extend the question to: "What constitutes a good platform as a blockchain". The latter part of that question is obviously the tough part because it's uncharted territory. In my opinion, a platform is essentially just code being built on top of other code. I think the best thing to do at this point is look at past "platforms" to see if we can determine commonalities.

First you've got operating system type platforms.
  • Windows / OSX / Linux
  • Internet Explorer / Firefox / Chrome
  • iOS / Android
  • Wordpress / Joomla / Drupal
And then you've got social platforms.
  • MySpace
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Pinterest
  • Instagram
In the case of an OS platform, it's obvious the key to their success is in extensibility. Network effect follows the OS with the most apps/add-ons/extensions (whatever word you use it's all the same thing). As for social platforms, success has more to do with getting word of mouth than actual utility (at first). I believe a blockchain would most easily fit into the former category, not the latter. In fact, social platforms would eventually be built on top of a blockchain platform.

One great recent example worth studying is the Wordpress CMS. It has a lot in common with how I originally envisioned DPOS chains playing out. It's an open source CMS that anyone can use to create separate websites and maintains its network effect because so many 3rd party developers have created extensions for it. Forking the code would break all of its extensibility (and thus its utility). It seems to me developers want to take blockchains in the same direction as websites. Everyone wants their own.

I'm still torn on the one blockchain to rule them all versus the decentralized "website" approach but I think once you get past the "blockchain = currency" line of thinking, a fragmented approach similar to Wordpress makes the most sense. Cryptonomix could really take blockchain tech mainstream if you went in this direction. Completely open source Graphene and provide consultation services to businesses who can benefit from using a private chain. You guys seem to already be going in this direction so that's good.

How could this benefit BTS? There would be a lot of 3rd party development going into Graphene and in my opinion that's the most important part.

My 0.02 BTS.

The current system is a decentralised version of what has worked well to create successful and competitive companies for hundreds of years.

+5% He's right. Start with what's been proven to work and iterate from there.
