General Discussion / Re: All problems with DPoS solved with one easy change
« on: September 25, 2015, 02:58:58 pm »
The algorithm should place more weight on the length of time that the funds are locked up for.

For example:

Poloniex signs up to be a witness and locks up 10,000,000 BTS in a smart wallet that is inaccessible for 1 month (before transferring automatically to a wallet accessible to them).

I sign up to be a witness and l lock up 10,000 BTS for 30 years (similar smart wallet).

The default, apathetic, non-vote goes to me and not them.

Dig?

The risk is not only money but time.  Someone who locks up 10,000,000 BTS does not deserve to get the default apathetic votes unless it's for a long time.

And if someone locks up 1000 BTS for 1000 years?

that's why we must not fall in the trap to decide again (and with pressure) how much witnesses to use.
Let the number be dynamic and the decision be taken from the shareholders, the market, or the code.... or all together... but not only from one guru or a community that could be take a right decision now but prove to be wrong tomorrow when  circumstances change...  We must be more flexible!

 +5% Let the market/shareholders decide.

I'm reminded of something Vitalik Buterin once said: "network effect follows developers". It's something that really stuck with me because it's so true. When you look at all the major platforms out there like iOS, Windows, Wordpress, etc, etc, you realize they're popular because it was easy for entrepreneurs and hobbyists to build stuff on top of them. I think the core team of developers should focus on making bitshares/graphene a platform that's easy to build on.  End of the day, chains that have lots of 3rd party development (and thus utility), will win.

As I understand your proposal, this only makes a difference in terms of the visibility of delegates to vote for, rather than eligibility thereof?

Given that, I can't see how attack cost is exponential, or even linear - it seems to be just a plain old constant

My original proposal was that the system would be automated to vote for highest collateral bids by default setting.  It would only revert to the current system if users exercised the ability to manually vote.  If you wanted that increased cost of attack, you would have to remove the ability to manually vote.  I made the proposal the way I did because I'm not sure of everyone's consensus on removing manual voting, even though manual voting is probably a negative to leave in.  Due to voter apathy, the system would most likely always run solely by collateral bids.  At that point you have to think, why leave voting in at all?

I feel Bytemaster is too attached to voting so I had to make the suggestion the way I did as a compromise solution.  I would personally probably remove manual voting.

Manual voting has a psychological impact. It's like how our current "democracy" is mostly illusory but people will support and spread it because of the "democracy is good" meme.

General Discussion / Re: Initial Witness Pay & Number of Witnesses
« on: September 22, 2015, 01:31:06 pm »
I have no idea how "the market" will perceive 17 witnesses but I personally see no problem with it. Since the number of witnesses is dynamic, shareholders can vote for increased security if and when it's needed. How many bouncers does a little mom and pop business need? Not many. Wait until the little business turns into something huge before adding all those redundant expenses up-front. I don't think this community should let irrational perception guide it, even if it means a smaller market cap for now.

I guess my main question would be how you see private blockchains. What are some specific use cases for private chains and how do they save businesses money?

Strategically aligning BTS with BTC in a win-win is definitely the best strategy moving forward.

I think dynamic account permissions are Graphenes greatest feature. Even beyond price stable cryptocurrencies.

Wow, that really was an awesome interview! I'll admit I had little interest in the project until I listened to this. +5%

I feel so indecisive saying this but Identabit is kind of growing on me. It was the capital D that put me off. If it's between IDbit and Identabit, I much prefer identabit.

General Discussion / Re: Let's rebrand the name to Graphene
« on: August 16, 2015, 05:23:45 pm »
I agree the name should be changed. Graphene sounds 1000x better than bitshares does. I asked this same question when Graphene was first announced and the answer is no, it can't be rebranded. Reading between the lines I'm pretty sure it has to do with some legal issue. If they license out Graphene to 3rd parties they can't have a public chain named the same thing. Something along those lines.

My sense is that there's not a great likelihood IDentabit will work well as a name for this purpose.  So here are my entries for an alternative.

Solara (so-lah-ra)
currency: solar (so-lahr) or sol

Spectrum or Spectra
currency: spectra or spec

Radius
currency: rad

What functionality does Ethereum have (or promise to have in the future) over BitShares? How much does the name "Ethereum" contribute to its current 10x market cap advantage over BitShares?

Etherium has a good market cap because they were able to get momentum behind their tech. That counts more than many here would like to believe.
