@ Rune - I agree. 5% is better than nothing, and imo this should be subsidized by the shorts and also somehow BTS holders should have joint interest to share parts of their prospective return with bitAssets users. BTS holders would benefit enormously if bitUSD started to gain acceptance, bringing more value and acceptance to BTS itself. If they think that this happens without certain financial trade-off i think this is unlikely... Public bail-out for major bitAssets sounds interesting, to take the role of a bank deposit insurance scheme...

I think it is enough to post something like "last year people earned X% on BitUSD"... not changing... true... past performance is no guarantee of future performance.

Totally true, but that still leaves us nothing to market in our first year, and is exactly why we need the subsidy in the beginning.

i don't think that 5% p.a. would be enough to attract investors seeking return into holding bitUSD for a while. feels like we are fooling ourselves with regards to how much a fair compensation should be for exposure to systemic BTS risk. Even without BTS price volatility, my guess is 100%+ yield p.a. at current, initial stage.

most Western banks USD deposits yielding 0% are insured. For Argentina, or Russia perhaps, there is significant risk of local currency depreciation versus USD, and USD deposits can be seized by governments. Thus people prefer to hold cash USD, or local banks pay them 10% p.a. return on USD deposits. bitUSD could be an alternative, but yield should be priced fairly compared with BTS expected return.

As BM stated before - not everyone is seeking return. Some want to diversify away from banks, some want to do business. ratailers holding small amounts of bitUSD would be a plus. Perhaps demand could be substantial in the remittance market due to fast and cheap transfers, bitUSD price stability versus USD, while the exposure to BTS systemic risk by each transacting party is very brief and comparably small (as opposed to investors seeking return). here the local gateways, perhaps even private brokers (localbitcoins idea), would be key.

However, anyone thinking about marketing BTS platform to professional FX traders, please go and visit an FX trading desk first and see at what speed and what high tech is employed by leading brokers and exchanges. 10 seconds is like eternity there - BTSX isn't likely to get traction in there in the near future imo... also not sure, why someone with trading account in a bank should trade bitGOOG or bitGold instead of highly liquid Google or Gold CFD at 10 USD per trade... I am not saying bitAssets won't get even more accurately priced, gain liquidity in the future, and allow for smaller market participants without proper banking access to do all things they want at low cost. just think that the status quo with professional traders and electronic trading via exchanges, platforms like bloomberg etc. is not yet to be doubted.

@sschechter  +5% +5% +5% idea! Requires a strong, remarkable slogan... something along the following lines, perhaps:

BTS -> secure your freedom by freeing up your security!

Security OR AND Freedom? !

With BitShares platform there is no need to compromise BETWEEN freedom and security. GET THEM BOTH by using BTS!

BTS: Where FREEDOM meets SECURITY

Security, powered by Freedom.

BTS: Liberty, Security, Cooperation
(Along the lines Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite)

One of my favorite books with regards to anthropological and conceptual interconnections and distinctions between DEBT and MONEY (but not necessarily for its leftish redistribution agenda):

David Graeber: Debt - the First 5000 Years.
http://www.amazon.com/Debt-Updated-Expanded-First-Years/dp/1612194192/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1414871910&sr=1-1&keywords=david+graeber+debt+the+first+5000+years

(you can find also pdf links on google, but i am not sure if posting such somehow violates copyright, thats why i post amazon)

Thx vm for the links!

No offense but the title of this thread sounds preachy, and BM is busy coding without having to read books. He doesnt do the marketing anyway.

Bytemaster has other duties besides coding; he is effectively the CEO of the Bitshares DAC. It seems to me this book is exactly where his "heads at" right now. My intention wasn't to be preachy.

Reading trhrough Amazon reviews looks like a must read for anyone who is to be taken seriously while discussing marketing on this forum!

...BTC is struggling with mass adoption because the vast majority of humans can only cope with tech evolution not revolution...

Let's not mix up ideology with values with emotions. We might not succeed pushing either ideology or trying to sell BTS based on emotions. VALUES is what we need to define and live imo.

Even coming from various backgrounds and having different worldviews we bitSHARE certain values e.g. such as freedom, privacy, fairness, creativity, meritocracy, security - to name a few... bitValues should define BitShares culture!

I like the idea of having a set of tenets somehow attached to the brand. (e.g. Bitshares stands for freedom, privacy, fairness, creativity, meritocracy, security etc), but that's it - literally a list. Let people interpret these words to fit their own worldview and belief system.

Anything beyond that and we become preachers. Do we want to become preachers? I don't think we do. If we were to go down that route IMHO we place ourselves in to very dogy territory from a marketing standpoint. We have to start negative campaigning against other economic models and quickly you get in to an place where you are having to agree that you don't believe in a nations and states. This message, whether you believe in nation and state or not, does not have mass market appeal IMHO.

+5% I agree with the vision being embodied in a set of 4/5 key tenants/principles/values a mainstream majority can universally relate to in their own way.

But because we do have a very small budget with which to try & kickstart something potentially global in a short time, I'm not averse to doing something with bit more kick/oomph/controversy to get noticed. (In fact I'd personally target the most lucrative niches first and learn from that vs. jumping straight into mainstream where we may have pretty glaring obvious strategy flaws that could have been ironed out. Also if you're not focusing on a quite specific demographic, with a small budget, it's easy to spend a lot of money and not make any impact at all.)

Hopefully the marketing team did their homework on market segmentation and what area/demographics to focus on and with what messages. Folks and market segments out there have various values which define their buying attitudes. Most Chinese business students, for instance, will likely have different attitudes compared with experienced US programmers, and both of them will differ from London bankers and Indian retailers...

do i want to use bitUSD PRIMARILY because
- my cool schoolmates use it and i don't want to look stupid? (ego-defensive)
- that is convenient for payments and earns yield? (utilitarian)
- it corresponds to my ideals of freedom and privacy? (value-expressive)
- in fact is the state-of-the-art and most secure alternative among cryptos? (knowledge-based)

thus the marketing message to each distinct group should be carefully targeted based on their attitudes. 3i marketing have probably done lots of market research already... here is an educational summary of consumer attitudes approach;
http://marketography.com/tag/ego-defensive-function/

i am not claiming to know much about selling breakthrough high-tech, just hoping to help in framing this thread.

Deutsch (German) / Re: Übersetzungen zB. Assets
« on: October 26, 2014, 09:23:45 pm »

General Discussion / New Ray Dalio Paper
« on: October 26, 2014, 09:18:56 pm »
folks, just wanted to post this link to recently revised and extended paper by one of the most influential macro traders / thinkers of our time:

http://cdn1.valuewalk.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/ray_dalio__how_the_economic_machine_works__leveragings_and_deleveragings.pdf

in addition to theoretical model and historical analysis, his growth predictions based on productivity and structural reforms in various countries could be especially of interest, starting from page 180...

i don't necessarily agree with all of it, but it is intriguing to see how the head of world biggest and hugely successful hedge fund thinks about the economic cycles.
His previous youtube presentation is quite cool i think...

wow wtf https://www.facebook.com/pages/Nxtty/645168825569486

46k followers! Bought or collected!? mhh

almost sure they've bought 46k... the sharing and posting activity on the site doesn't look that huge.

still, a very clever idea is to organize contests for the newest gadgets - this is very popular especially in poorer asian countries which are crucial markets for mobile payments!

Bordering on delusional to think BitShares will succeed in the near future if Bitcoin goes into a deep depression or fades completely. What we need most right now is crypto-hype returning so we can reach a market cap capable of sustaining tens of projects with million dollar budgets during 2015. I have always had a vision that it would be crypto 2.0 that returned the hype to crypto this time around, so NXT, Counter Party, Ethereum and BitShares might be able to renew interest in Bitcoin and spark the next bubble (Bitcoin to 15 billion, NXT to 200 million, Counter Party to 150 million, Ethereum to 400 million and BitShares to 1 billion).

Or if you listened to the last part of Bytemasters mumble-hangout with the Chinese community where he talks about the gift-economy.

bitSharing
bitGift
shareBits
giftBits

or the best one:
GiftShares

Honestly if we are to rebrand anyway, in the name of all that is (un)holy, loose the "bit". No more bit. Ever.

unfortunate thing for German speakers is that "Gift", even if used in English, is subconsciously associated with its German meaning "poison"...
