General Discussion / Re: VOTE DAC Just Got More Interesting

It's ironic that a lot of people who hold the belief that everything is in their head and nothing is real write a lot of books about it. Who do they think is going to read them? :)

Fans of the Matrix?  ;)

@cube @toast, I just tried to setup a faucet, but don't know how to config below settings

"
export BACKEND_URL=http://url-of-backend-app:4444
export BACKEND_SECRET=random-string-shared-with-backend
"
Does this mean I need to run a client with "--httpport 4444" on "url-of-backend-app" ip address?
and what does BACKEND_SECRET suppose to be

thanks

I have ever asked toast similar question but no answer.  I believe the brief information in the readme serves a purpose.  You may like to read through the codes and be familiarised with them (*hint*).  ;)

I could not get the 0.0.4 windows wallet to work after an upgrade.  I finally solved the problem by creating a new wallet (painful!).  I have sent some fund to the faucet.  The registration fee for a new account has increased 5 times.  So please do not abuse the use of the faucet.  Let the new users benefit from it.

Enjoy!  :)

General Discussion / Re: The problem with multi-sig transactions...
« on: October 16, 2014, 02:00:39 am »
So if I understand this correctly, if BitShares has an escrow multisig built into the wallet, it seems like a localbitcoins.com-like website for BTSX would be trivial to setup.

A localbts.com website wouldnt even need to store any funds, it would just act as the 3rd party signature and 99% of the time the website wouldnt need to do anything because the buyer and seller would agree and give both of the required signatures.

This is in contrast to Bitcoin, where multisig is complicated so localbitcoins.com stores the funds exclusively on its server, with all the added security problems.

Exactly!  It makes many transactions simple.

I am beginning to see the beauty of the solution.  Less is more.  +5%

..
Votes are bought all the time... only they are bought with campaign promises to steal other peoples money to pay welfare and special interests.   At least buying votes up front is being done with the vote buyers money rather than the money of the people who voted against the welfare.

So you see.. vote buying has been made into an irrational politically correct opinion rather than a rational realization that for the average person selling their vote to the highest bidder is much better for them.

For example: in my opinion there is no difference between the two major parties in the US and I know the process is rigged.  Knowing that my vote is not even worth the time to cast it, I would gladly sell my vote because my life would be better by selling my vote than by not selling it.

If we wanted to have a rational political system it should require 95% voter approval and that approval would have to be BOUGHT.   5% error to prevent deadlock for those unwilling to sell at any price...

You may be able to buy up 90% of the vote cheaply... but to get the approval of those who would be harmed the most by a bill 5% minority... would be a lot more expensive.    You would have a government with 95% consensus based upon property rights.
..

Hmm.. I see a vote-auction system is on the cards.  This is exciting!

General Discussion / Re: Ebay and Open Bazaar - maybe wrong target

Yeah it sounds exciting. It should work depending on how familiar and seamless the whole experience is to the average consumer. If it's done well then circa 5% yield is probably ideal. (Because counter-intuitively past a certain yield, the average consumer may perhaps think it's 'too good' and questionable as a result. The same goes for a deposit bonus if they did one.)

Yes, the sleeper consumers would need to be assured that they would get back the same amount of USD (ie the bitUSD peg holds true)  as they put into the debit card.

Who says you have to even be aware of that currency?  Get a debit card that returns a yield from StanCardTM or something.

Load the prepaid "StanCard" wit USD via the on-ramp service, earn interest while on the card, and unload the card when you buy something in USD from any merchant that accepts prepaid StanCards.

StanCard is already trade-marked?  Wow!  Things are moving fast..

I am sorry you are facing this.  Two possible scenarios :

1) Bter is hacked.  You should quickly contact Bter support and check with them,  or

2) Your PC is being hacked or it got a malware infection.   Your could be a victim of a phishing attempt.   The Bter website you are accessing was a fake and you were sending information to a fake bter.  Or your PC could be remotely controlled/spied on and your transmissions were being altered.  You should do a immediate full and thorough anvirus/anti-malware scan.

"exchanging virtual currency"

hmm.. does btsx <-> bitusd/bitasset count?

Updated binaries at keyid.info

Thanks for the Windows binary.  I encountered this error with 0.0.4 win binary after an upgrade:

I don't know but it will be interesting for this to be more obvious rather than just approx.

Just to note: Coinprism yesterday suggested $5,700 for BitShares, $40 for NXT, and $1.73 for Counterparty, while promoting the idea of "creating an asset on Coinprism costs just a Bitcoin transaction fee (3 cents, or even free if you want, as they are optional)" but I don't know, if that is accurate or much of the substantial difference between those platforms.

Coinprism is issuing colored coins while counterparty user-issued asset.  What are the main differences, besides the issue fees?
