General Discussion / Meetup Brochure - HTML version (experimental)
« on: June 04, 2015, 01:09:55 pm »
I really enjoy using HTML, especially for things it was never meant for... so the brochure is designed in HTML.
This means it can never be as shiny-slick as @emailtoaj's, but it does have the upside of being hack-friendly, so I put it on GitHub.

I used @robrigo's brochure as a starting point, and adapted some nice bits from bitshares.org and Arlene's infographics.

Editable HTML version (Chrome only!)
https://rawgit.com/roadscape/bts-brochure/master/index.html

Printable PDF version:
https://rawgit.com/roadscape/bts-brochure/master/brochure.pdf

It may take a little bit of experimentation with margin and scale settings to get the PDF to print correctly. Specifying no margins and unchecking "scale to fit" works best on my printer.

The goal is to use these for local meetups and events. I plan to update it regularly to keep up with feedback and updates.

Episode #64 Bitshares on the Open Road (ft. @bitscape, @robrigo, @roadscape)

Recorded last weekend in Nashville, TN :)

"In between Serbia and Croatia, on an area of about 6 sq.km, a brand new country named Free Republic of Liberland (Svobodná republika Liberland) has emerged. The new state will adopt Bitcoin, or another Bitcoin-based currency, as its national currency."

"The preparatory committee granted powers to the president to inform the neighbouring countries, as well as UN and the rest of the world, of emergence of a new state via diplomatic notes. Founders of the new state want to establish a society where decent people could prosper without excessive governmental prohibitions and taxes. Our ideals are Monaco, Liechtenstein and Hong Kong” Jedlička said.

The country was proclaimed only last week: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberland

"There are plans for an official cryptocurrency system, although all other currencies will be allowed.
The politicians will be constitutionally forbidden from indebting the nation."

Has something like this been tried before?

General Discussion / BitShares Peer to Peer Tour - USA, Spring 2015

BitShares Peer to Peer Tour - USA, Spring 2015

In two weeks, we’ll be hitting the road and taking a very roundabout route to Blacksburg Virginia,
one of the biggest BitShares hotspots in the USA. The plan is to connect with community members
face-to-face, share stories, and document the heart behind the movement. We’ll be live-blogging
and filming along the way.

With our sense of adventure and hilariously meager funds, this trip is sure to include a lot of hijinks
over a period of 3 weeks and 3,000+ miles (5,000 km). We’re still working out the details but many
community members have graciously offered us places to stay. Let us know if you’d be willing to
help along the route!

Here’s the plan so far:

Arrival Dates
Sat 3/21 Madison, WI - @crypto_prometheus
Sun 3/22 Chicago, IL - @solomon & more
Mon 3/23 Detroit, MI - @robrigo
Wed 3/25 Philadelphia, PA - @riverhead & more
Sun 3/29 Washington, DC
Thu 4/2 Blacksburg, VA - @dan, @stan, @adam & devs
Thu 4/9 Nashville, TN - @fuzzy

On this trip we’ll be conducting interviews and asking a lot of questions.
What do you want to know? Who do you want to see?
Any points on the way we absolutely cannot miss?

Get in touch if you can meet up.
Hope to see you on the road! 8)

General Discussion / [ANN] Cryptofresh is now open-source!
« on: February 03, 2015, 03:58:48 pm »
Having the first mover advantage gives a competitive edge in this space, but we believe
that the idea of individual gains at this moment is myopic in light of the benefits for the
entire community by open-sourcing as soon as possible.

cryptofresh is written in Rails and the entirety of its code can be found here:
https://github.com/roadscape/cryptofresh

I look forward to improving the store and eventually would like to see it refactored into a
gem to fully facilitate code reuse. As it stands, this code is a useful guide and/or starting
point for anyone looking to build a shop of their own, or as a learning resource.

The plan was to earn back our investment and polish the code before releasing it.
But the clock is ticking, and there's no time to wait.
We’re taking yet another leap of faith.

Cryptofresh.com is a proof-of-awesome BitShares store.

The store is live, t-shirts are here, the referral program is implemented,
and you can now pay with BitUSD, BitCNY, BitEUR, BitGOLD, and BitSILVER.

Sorry, we don't accept NuBits, BTC, and not even BTS. BitAssets only! :)

We are pleased to announce the release of our first T-Shirts @ cryptofresh.com!

With our new referral program, earn $2 BitUSD for every shirt you sell!

Importance of BitASSET adoption

The adoption and use of BitAssets in ecommerce helps establish them as our community's original products,
and this strengthens our case when it comes to potential intellectual property conflicts.
It's especially important for BitGOLD and BitUSD. So spread the word!

This project is a labor of love, along with everything else that we're working on, and we
are trying to turn it into a profitable enterprise which contributes back to the community.

General Discussion / [pre-ann] New BitUSD store, looking for feedback
« on: January 03, 2015, 07:20:36 pm »
Cryptofresh.com is a BitShares-exclusive store

This is a call for testers and general feedback.
The official announcement will be next week.

There are currently two items listed:
  • BitShares Desktop Wallpaper - for testing, buy the small one for $0.05
  • BitShares 101 PDF - $0.99
It's the first fully automated BitUSD payment system--try it out!

Cryptofresh is part of our media.bitscape delegate bid.

General Discussion / Blockchain Analysis / Spammy Accounts
« on: November 07, 2014, 06:05:08 am »
I scanned through the blockchain to show spammy entities.

These account names are grouped by the balance id that registered them, and sorted by quantity.

Proceed at your own peril..

Stakeholder Proposals / delegate.roadkill, community apprentice developer
« on: October 30, 2014, 08:23:53 pm »
I'm a coder/sysadmin by trade, eager to contribute to this grand philosophy.
I'd love to be able help with important things like bugs, stability, and core features.
There's a lot to learn, so I'm starting with the basics.

I'm launching a delegate as the first step of my initial learning plan:
  • Build bitsharesx, learn the CLI basics, launch a delegate, publish price feeds
  • Reflect on what I can offer; write a delegate bid
  • Contribute to the wiki by cleaning/simplifying/elaborating
    • I plan to make this a habit for every new aspect I explore.
    • I'm good at simplifying and documenting procedures.
  • Study how the RPC system and various toolkits work
  • Play with market-maker bots (I'm excited to do this)
  • (I'll keep an updated roadmap as I progress in my quest)

Some potential "beginner projects" I'm excited about:
  • Working with and enhancing delegate automation tools
  • Pulling data/reports from blockchain
    • (I love working with and adding value to large data sets)
  • Learning about and improving external parts (e.g. price feed scripts)
  • Communicating with the blockchain from web apps
  • Dip my toes into BitShares code by studying and hunting bugs
  • to be continued...

Throughout all of this, I will:
  • Keep the delegate up-to-date, publish all feeds, and be quick to adopt and adapt
  • Engage with other developers and contribute to the extent my skill level permits
  • Leave all documentation better than I found it and write it if it doesn't exist
  • Engage on a local level (3 of us have schemed on a weekly basis for the last 2 weeks :D)
  • Help others interested in following a similar path

Support my quest to learn, document, and
contribute to the technical aspects of the BTS vision.

  • Are there any resources for new devs I should know about?
  • Active developers: how did you get started?
  • Potential developers: what's holding you back?
  • What are some good starter projects for apprentice devs?
  • Questions/feedback?

General Discussion / Cost basis in BTC or USD
« on: September 29, 2014, 12:10:50 am »
I've been calculating my cost basis for altcoins in BTC, and I'm realizing this might have been a bad idea, given its volatility.

Do you guys track your cost basis for BTSX in USD?
Is it dumb to track altcoin cost bases in BTC?

General Discussion / BTC Double-spend listed on blockchain.info
« on: September 13, 2014, 12:55:04 am »
https://blockchain.info/double-spends

I've visited this page a few times and this is the first time I've seen something listed here.

The date of the transaction is 2014-09-12 20:50:06. If that's UTC time, then that's approx 4 hours ago.

So how does this work? I was under the impression the only double-spends were during the v.8 fork.

Technical Support / BitSharesX client and PTS
« on: September 09, 2014, 04:54:06 am »
I downloaded the BitSharesX client, created an account, and kindly received 30 BTSX for doing so.

I've spent a few hours reading about BitShares and I'm impressed!

I'm also confused. I bought PTS on Cryptsy and want to withdraw it. The BitsharesX client appears to be an exchange, but from what I've seen it only handles BTSX. So I downloaded the BitShares-PTS client and am waiting for the sync. But how then do I exchange PTS for BTSX?
