General Discussion / Re: bitUSD price
« on: September 13, 2014, 08:21:12 pm »
Here is the current numbers on btc and is pairings

#   Source   Pair   Volume (24h)   Price   Volume (%)   Updated
1   BitcoinAverage   BTC/USD   $ 9,511,380   $ 481.41   59.92 %   Recently
2   BitcoinAverage   BTC/CNY   $ 5,399,340   $ 477.96   34.02 %   Recently
3   BitcoinAverage   BTC/EUR   $ 597,300   $ 485.14   3.76 %   Recently
4   BitcoinAverage   BTC/GBP   $ 164,622   $ 489.51   1.04 %   Recently
5   BitcoinAverage   BTC/RUB   $ 104,037   $ 498.83   0.66 %   Recently
6   BitcoinAverage   BTC/CAD   $ 96,500   $ 481.65   0.61 %   Recently

as you can see USD is the leader followed by CNY then EUR
This above chart looks like a "healthy" global interest. It is not bad that we have great Chinese interest but I am pointing out why the lack of interest from the rest of the world. Perhaps its because we are young? Different marketing strategy between what is done on the Chinese side vs the rest of the world?  I am trying to identify a possible short coming then perhaps we can focus on correcting it.

BitcoinAverage excludes two very large BTC exchanges because they have a 0% trading fee.

Here's a recent article: CoinDesk: Yuan Trades Now Make Up Over 70% of Bitcoin Volume

General Discussion / Re: Possible Solution To Keyloggers
« on: September 13, 2014, 05:23:35 pm »
wouldnt it be like 2fa?

Nope, it's just letting the user input a password in a more secure way.

Could also do on-screen keyboard. All modern OS's have this, though I like the idea of some sort of non-typed input. Perhaps a third party add-on.

The problem with an on screen keyboard is I have to use a password I can hold in my memory and it can't be too difficult to type out.

QR code login:

a) Allows for LONG secure passwords
b) Keylogger resistant
c) User friendly (hold paper up to camera)

There's a chance that your webcam could be spied on as well, though, isn't there?

I use a password manager with copy-to-clipboard functionality. The password is never shown/typed, and the clipboard is cleared after 10 seconds. Easy!

Edit: and yes clipboard could be unsafe too, but here's a possible solution: http://keepass.info/help/v2/autotype_obfuscation.html

I get everything you are saying but WHY such high high Chinese interest and a complete lack of interest from the rest of the world btsx/cny trading make up between 70-80% of total total 24hr volume. When you look at the second highest 24 hour volume(btsx/btc it changes exchanges to bter(a high fee exchange). Btc transaction's are how most of the rest of the world gets into btsx. What I am trying to say is the market seems almost totally supported by one Chinese exchange exchange(btc38) and one pairing btsx/cny.Am I concerned about nothing, does this bother anyone else?

Which parts of the world are lacking BTSX interest?

China has 4x the population of the U.S., and worldwide, Mandarin has 2.5x more speakers than English.

They have a fairly lively community here: https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?board=4.0

And if you look at Bitcoin markets, you'll see that approx 70% of the BTC trading volume is in CNY.

Doesn't seem crazy to me.

that is, too, an issue with the GUI.
all those indices are basically variables that should have been replaced by the underlying framework ..

don't ask me why they weren't :(

the assert exception might be solvable by an update to 0.4.14 ..

Are the variables localized? Perhaps they are missing translations for bitsharesrussia's (presumably) Russian OS environment?

General Discussion / BTC Double-spend listed on blockchain.info
« on: September 13, 2014, 12:55:04 am »
https://blockchain.info/double-spends

I've visited this page a few times and this is the first time I've seen something listed here.

The date of the transaction is 2014-09-12 20:50:06. If that's UTC time, then that's approx 4 hours ago.

So how does this work? I was under the impression the only double-spends were during the v.8 fork.

Question about bitUSD.

I read that a fixed value requires variable supply (and vice versa). This makes sense.

So how is the supply of bitUSD controlled? Is it in the market's hands somehow? Is it that anyone can "create" bitUSD by borrowing it against BTSX? And then it's essentially "destroyed" when you return it?

On a related note--bytemaster was talking about price feeds for bitUSD a while back. We aren't still using these, are we? And are there any similar "crutches" in the BitSharesX system currently?

I wouldn't take too much wait in any poll anything happening on bitscointalk :-)

Soo... volume on bitCNY is a little bit miserable and there are bids above the peg. Anybody out there? Anybody want to short into my overpriced bids? :)

If bitUSD:BTSX is 25.65 and CNY:USD is 0.16, does that mean bitCNY should ideally be at 4.104? What's the best way to determine the true value?

When everyone transitions their bitPTS out, does the downward pressure on bitPTS get balanced out by placing shorts?

It's starting to make sense, thank you!

So if I simply want to invest in PTS, it doesn't really matter if its in PTS or bitPTS, except that:
 - Keeping PTS I'll be eligible to receive equity from new DACs
 - Keeping bitPTS I'll be able to earn dividends/rewards

Do I have it correct?

Thank you all for walking me through this!

They are on one blockchain. Your butUSD address is the same as your btsx address (ie, your registered account name). Anyone can send you bitUSD to your account name on the BitSharesX blockchain.

So how does BitPTS fit into this?

I have a few PTS in a wallet, and I tried the 'Import Keys from Wallet' feature in the BTS client. It says it was successful but it doesn't look like anything happened.

Is BitPTS pegged to "real PTS"? Or are they the same thing?

Ok, created a Bter account and bought/transferred some BTSX to my client.

I managed to buy some bitUSD! Exciting  :)

So it seems at the very least, the BitSharesX client allows me to store a BTSX and bitUSD balance.

But aren't they separate blockchains? Where is my bitUSD address?

It's just that I thought that the BitSharesX client was an exchange. I am using Cryptsy and they only have PTS, not BTSX.

« on: September 09, 2014, 04:54:06 am »
I downloaded the BitSharesX client, created an account, and kindly received 30 BTSX for doing so.

I've spent a few hours reading about BitShares and I'm impressed!

I'm also confused. I bought PTS on Cryptsy and want to withdraw it. The BitsharesX client appears to be an exchange, but from what I've seen it only handles BTSX. So I downloaded the BitShares-PTS client and am waiting for the sync. But how then do I exchange PTS for BTSX?
