Stakeholder Proposals / How to shut down a node
« on: May 20, 2016, 09:56:38 pm »
Simple question. I have a node running, but if I kill the process, the entire blockchain gets replayed when I start up again. How do I gracefully shut down a node so that this doesn't happen?

Thanks!

Stakeholder Proposals / [Worker Proposal] Chronos Crypto videos
« on: May 19, 2016, 12:57:26 am »
First, let me introduce myself. I've been around Bitshares since late 2014, back when workers and witnesses were combined as "delegates", and we ran v0.9 as a desktop client. Then in the summer of 2015, I contracted directly for Cryptonomex for a couple months, doing UI work for the light wallet. I've always been fascinated by the tech behind Bitshares.

For several years, I have run a Youtube channel under the brand Chronos Crypto, which consists primarily of news, lectures, walkthroughs, and product reviews. Check it out at https://www.youtube.com/c/ChronosCrypto.

Now that the BTS 2.0 tech is complete and running smoothly, it's time to bring it the masses. There's so much to cover. Below are a few video ideas:

# Tech Lectures (Example video: Xtreme Thinblocks)
   - DPOS for Dummies (witness roles; the advantage over PoW)
   - Hired by the Blockchain (worker roles)
   - Power to the People (committee roles)
   - Decentralized Consensus (proxy voting)
   - What is a SmartCoin? (shorts and margin calls)
   - Peg All the Things (price feeds and forced settlement)
   - Refer a Friend (referral/registrar system)
   - Custom Account Permissions (Threshold accounts, weight-based accounts, and multi-sig accounts)
# Walkthroughs (Example video: Getting Started with Electrum)
   - Creating an account on OpenLedger
   - Trading on the DEX
   - Securing your wallet with cold storage
   - Creating and managing your own assets
   - Setting up a witness node
   - Buying a lifetime account for marketing referrals
# News & Announcements (Example video: Bitcoin Classic)
   - New features (stealth transactions, subsidizing market liquidity, trollbox in the DEX, etc.)
   - Announcements (new worker or witness proposal to consider)
   - Trending discussions

I propose to create a worker role to produce Bitshares videos under the Chronos Crypto brand. The YouTube channel has well over 400 subscribers, and is well-known in the bitcoin community, so this content will be dual-purpose: to bring new users to the platform, and to help make Bitshares more comprehensible for all of us.

If elected, I will produce a minimum of 3 Bitshares-related videos per month, and publish them on the YouTube channel. In exchange, the worker role will be 500,000 BTS per month, or about $1800 at current prices. I propose to run a worker term of 3 months, and then we can re-assess at that time.  If BTS holders are pleased with my work, it's likely that a second term will be an option.

Stakeholder Proposals / What's up with the Burn roles?
« on: May 19, 2016, 12:15:51 am »
We now have two 100k-burn worker roles that are receiving pay ahead of the refund worker. See http://cryptofresh.com/workers. What's the difference -- this BTS doesn't go into the reserve fund? Is there any purpose to these workers?

EDIT: why is there even a distinction between burning and recycling? I must be missing something.

Stakeholder Proposals / How does "pay_vesting_period_days" work?
« on: May 18, 2016, 08:47:01 pm »
At http://docs.bitshares.org/bitshares/tutorials/worker-create.html I read the following, on the topic of worker vesting:

Quote
The variable pay_vesting_period_days is the integer number of days you set for vesting.
Does this mean that after n days, the entire payment switches from unavailable to available? Or does it mean that 1/n of the payment becomes available each day until the nth day is reached? If the latter, is there a way to set up the former?

Technical Support / Hosted Wallet registrars
« on: May 18, 2016, 05:53:59 pm »
It looks like the most popular BTS 2.0 hosted wallet is OpenLedger, which takes a whopping 50% cut from referrals when it acts as a registrar, leaving just 30% to the referrer. What competing registrars, if any, exist?

Technical Support / Do Annual Accounts still exist?
« on: May 17, 2016, 09:56:57 pm »
The example at https://bitshares.org/referral-program/ references "Annual Accounts" which have their rates locked in for one year. Is this still an available option? I don't see "Buy Annual Account" next to "Buy Lifetime Subscription" in the light wallet at https://bitshares.openledger.info.

I seem to recall that Annual Accounts were removed, so if that's true, the page should be updated.

EDIT: Also, the light wallet references registrar fees, but I don't see info in the help docs about this. Do we have an up-to-date writeup of how it all works?

General Discussion / Bug: duplicate icons on bitshares.org

Each link in the main portion of https://bitshares.org/ appears twice for me, once with the /zh path prefix, and once without.

Technical Support / Rate-limited free transactions status?
« on: May 12, 2016, 03:09:58 am »
What's the status of rate-limited free transactions on BTS mainnet? See https://github.com/cryptonomex/graphene/issues/603. It's a bit difficult to tell from the Github issue if this is now on the main chain.

The fee schedules at https://bitshares.openledger.info/#/explorer/fees and http://cryptofresh.com/fees don't mention the feature, so it would seem that it might not be active.

If this is active, are the specific coin-age requirements documented anywhere?

Stakeholder Proposals / Cryptofresh worker report questions
« on: May 11, 2016, 09:15:24 pm »
Quick question: What do the bits of green on the left of each Supporting Stake bar mean? Is that the amount of support that can be lost without the worker becoming unfunded?

Another, trickier question: Why is Funding Percentage at 42% for the refund400k worker, considering that the sum of the daily pay of the workers above it does not total 58% of 400k BTS? I was under the impression that this meant that 42% of 400k is the daily total refunded.

Stakeholder Proposals / Witness pay per block calculations
« on: May 11, 2016, 03:03:01 pm »
The network is currently configured for 1.5 BTS to be created per block. With the current network state of 25 witnesses and 3-second blocks, that gives 1.5 BTS every 75 seconds per witness, or about 51840 BTS of income per month to act as a witness.

Is this the correct approach to calculation? An interesting side-effect is that adding a witness will keep network costs the same, while diluting the individual pay for each witness.

Stakeholder Proposals / Committee documentation
« on: May 11, 2016, 01:44:34 pm »
The documentation at http://docs.bitshares.eu/bitshares/user/committee.html has a few tutorials for specific activities, but it's incomplete. Do we have documentation about questions like the following?

  • Can a proposal be vetoed by anther committee member?
  • To go into effect, does a proposal need approval by a majority of the committee?
  • Can the two-week proposal delay be modified by the committee?
  • Where can the list of active proposals be reviewed?

Technical Support / Total number of witnesses
« on: May 10, 2016, 09:07:21 pm »
I see from http://cryptofresh.com/witnesses that we currently have 27 active witnesses, with the rest on standby. How is this number determined, and what can move the threshold between active and standby?

Technical Support / Bitshares total chain size
« on: May 10, 2016, 09:03:45 pm »
Bitshares 2.0 has been running for a bit over 6 months now. Does anyone info on how the size of the blockchain has grown over time?

Random Discussion / Chronos Talks: Personal Finance
« on: April 24, 2016, 09:45:05 pm »
Hi guys,

I've started up a new YouTube channel on the topic of personal finance (and whatever else might come to mind). It seems that society doesn't always do a good job giving people the basics on how to handle finances, although the crypto community in general does a bit better -- after all, crypto is a form of money. Anyway, this video series is a way for me to bring some of my own thoughts to the table.

Here are the first two episodes:

Episode 1: Debt is a Fire
Episode 2: Venn Diagram of Debt

Here's a direct link to the YouTube Channel: Chronos Talks

Enjoy!

Hey guys,

Denarium just came out with their 1 BTC, 1 ounce silver coin, and I'm pretty impressed with the quality, as far as physical crypto is concerned. IMO, This coin is rivaled by Coinographic's 25 LTC coin, but since Coinographic went down in a flaming pile of scam, this is our next best option.  :P

Here's my video review: https://youtu.be/pZJuqZCvSbY

Check their site at http://denarium.com

Enjoy!
