Random Discussion / Review: Ledger Nano S

Considering a hardware wallet for your bitcoin or ether? Consider the Ledger Nano S. I just released a video review: https://youtu.be/lUnobRQE5Q8

General Discussion / Re: Why is the price of bitShares so low?

But I have one BIG concern. Being a "Poof of Stake" coin could someone point me to a video or white paper that describers the current mechanism for current and future coin creation. I mean... with 2.5 billion coins already in circulation, I don't think any more are needed.
Great question. Did you see the Chronos Crypto video on the Bitshares inflation rate? It outlines precisely what makes the supply go up (or down). In a nutshell, it's witnesses and workers that increase supply, and fees bring it down. Here's a direct link: https://youtu.be/ohx46JlRzjc

We need witnesses to secure the network, so that's a fixed cost for shareholders. Workers are optional. Fees are really low right now, so the supply is still gradually growing.

How about a video about the worker system.
Explain how you make real money out of it and how others could do the same.
It is a great system and there could be so much more active workers doing great things for BitShares.

Oh , after this video, no one will take money out to buy BTS anymore as they know they can make videos/websites/photos/blog-posts for it .

In fact , I'm thinking about it : Why would I take out my hard earned money to buy 1000USD worth of BTS per month and take financial risks when I could just produce something with the knowledge that I already processed ? I'm sure every potential buyer of BTS has some knowledge or skill to offer to the Blockchain.
Although you're being sarcastic, now that I think about it, this might actually be a good thing. Imagine if a couple dozen newcomers joined us on the forums with their wacky and wild ideas for worker proposals. Not even considering the profit to shareholders (new workers currently burn 7338 BTS each), that would bring new attention and excitement to the community. Hey, who knows, maybe we would even want to hire one!

Although we have a great start toward covering the basics with the videos, here are two that I think are still top priority:
  • Trading on Margin with Bitshares (a web wallet demo that covers collateral ratios, margin calls, forced settlement, etc.)
  • Bitshares SmartCoins (easy-to-understand explanation of how pegs are maintained through shorting and price feeds)

It would also be nice to have a "Get Hired by the Blockchain" (info on how workers function) video, but it's not as critical.

Any others that you guys think are really top priority? @bitcrab your vote could bring the worker active again. What do you think of a short-term restoration to get the more important videos completed, and round out the set of tutorials for new users?

Great work, @alt! You're setting a great example with your fast response. Unfortunately, the feed could get a little strange until we have more witnesses make the fix...

Stakeholder Proposals / Re: 96%? Let's shake up witness voting.

Lafona ran a superb delegate node back in the day (before BTS 2.0). He's been great to work with, and I would highly recommend him as a witness.

P.S.  I would really like to see the DPoS error (distributed vs. delegated) fixed, at least in the on-screen graphic.  I'm sure that can be done with some editing alone (i.e. no need to re-record).
Unfortunately, we can't upload a new video without losing the 1000+ views, along with the 50 likes and 11 comments, on that video. However, I was able to find a way to use YouTube Annotations to update the text. It's not perfect, but it's pretty clean considering the constraints. Check it out! https://youtu.be/eSgsbBTxNfo?t=22s

Ah, ok, I wasn't thinking  about that.  Anyway,  you can barely notice the annotation even if you're looking for it.  I think it might also make sense to pop up an annotation for a few seconds correcting what you verbalized so people who notice the inconsistency will know which is correct.  What do you think?
Great idea. I'll get that extra annotation added later today when I get the chance. Thanks!
The extra blurb with the correction is now added. I think this is a big improvement. Good ideas, @tbone! https://youtu.be/eSgsbBTxNfo.

Hi, glad you're enjoying the videos!

To answer your question, well, it's complicated. You might learn more by digging through the histories in these forums. Basically, Bitshares passed through a bit of a civil war, or what you might call a toxic environment. There was a controversial "merger" that massively inflated the supply over two years (roughly from 2014 to 2016), and we've dealt with a few broken promises. A lot of people have left the community, but those who remain are really committed to Bitshares, and see a bright future for it.

I agree, the tech is quite amazing. Welcome to the forums!  :)

I feel like we need more info (video) about :

  • Short Selling BitAssets
    • maintenance collateral ratio
    • maximum short squeeze ratio
    • short squeeze protection
    • call price
    • MARGIN CALL MECHANICS (this is the most important!)
  • Create Asset
    • all PERMISSIONS & FLAGS
    • differences between SMARTCOINS, USER ISSUED ASSETS, PREDICTION MARKET ASSETS
  • Vesting balances
  • PREDICTION MARKET (the proper way... Amanda's video it's not good enough)

Technical Support / Re: Bitshares API plugin to mimic Poloniex and others?
« on: December 22, 2016, 05:11:25 pm »
Well, it doesn't exist now, but that doesn't mean that it can't!

I think it would be possible, though the fact that Bitshares blocks are mined every 3 seconds, with exchange orders embedded in them, is certainly a difference from the mechanics of a centralized exchange. Any thoughts on if that could present a problem somehow?

The margin mechanism is much different, but that's not as important of an aspect for compatibility.

This is really weird. At first I thought Yahoo was showing an ETF price, but it really looks like it's gold spot vs USD. I can't find any reason for its higher price than the rest of the world, except that for some reason it's not able to be arbitraged properly. Not sure why.

But anyway, I can confirm that most of the world is trading on the 1130 spot price. A quick search around the internet reveals this. Example: https://www.bloomberg.com/quote/XAUUSD:CUR

You understand correctly, but fortunately this isn't a referrals worker -- in the same amount of time, svk got 0 referrals for his web wallet work, as did Roadscape on his block explorer worker, if I read the blockchain correctly. They weren't paid for referrals, either, but for the work they produced.

A better way to look at it is that we have 9 helpful and educational videos so far, which can be used as a training tool for years into the future.

how many referral sign-ups did you make via your videos?
Four referrals so far, linked on the blockchain. We can't detect referrals that didn't use the suggested referral link, so there are likely more.

See http://cryptofresh.com/u/chronos-youtube for the details (remember to exclude my test referrals).
