The site http://cryptofresh.com is the go-to of Bitshares block explorers. But I can't explore it. I can only explore this message:

Are you saying that all Bitshares assets are scams if they start with an ICO?
Truer than you might think.   :-\ Bitshares is a convenient place to run a scam.

General Discussion / Re: What R3 think of our bitassets / smartcoins
« on: November 30, 2016, 05:58:31 pm »
Interesting. It would be technically possible to use BTC as collateral on the BTS chain, while keeping BTS for fees. But it would have the same sidechain security challenges: BTC miners could collude to steal the collateral out from the asset. Today, BTS witnesses can't do this, so it's a step down in security.

I actually think that BTS can become a better and better collateral token as its market cap grows. Considering that, and the security implications, this line of inquiry doesn't excite me as much as it could. Honestly, if I were going to sidechain it up like this, I would be tempted to just clone Graphene and not use the BTS token at all.

Good discussion. After reading the R3 article, I like the Bitshares model more than ever.  :)

Great discussion. I've done my own thinking about this over the years, as well.

Another reason why Bitcoin would make much more sense as collateral is that many people trust and understand bitcoin so they know they can force settle at any time and get their bitcoin back.

That's exactly right, IMO. Bitcoin has always been the crypto to rule them all. But the point of Bitshares is to reward BTS holders, so BTS loses its investment potential if you sidechain BTC into it to use as a backing asset. In fact, I don't know why you wouldn't just drop BTS entirely and run the entire chain as a bitcoin sidechain, with BTC instead of BTS as the core token.

And this is (one reason) why it hasn't happened. It leaves BTS holders with nothing. But sidechains also have security challenges of their own.

That said, I actually think that BTS makes for very good backing collateral, and the criticism from R3 can't really be fixed "inside the system" at all, so to speak. It will just gradually diminish as the market and stability for BTS grows.

Watch Now -- Musings of a Bitcoiner

The above video link is the recommended method of consumption for the following text. For those with no speakers, or eardrums, or patience, a transcript has been provided below.

Bitcoiner. Bitcoiner. The word means different things to different people. Unfortunately, to most of my friends, it kind of means something like “nerdy loser.” And by most of my friends, I guess I should say both of my friends. Bitcoin has a wonderful way of trimming down those inconvenient friendships. But, like it or not, I’m a bitcoiner.

It all started when the price was much lower, and the world was much simpler, and I was much stupider. I first found out about bitcoin when the price was only $10. Dirt cheap. So what did I do? Nothing! Of course I did nothing. It was the only stupid thing to do. Thanks to not buying any bitcoin when it was cheap, I have found a great new way to get rich. It’s called work.

But once you find out about bitcoin, there’s no going back. Of course, you can still go sideways. Or down, kind of like the price of bitcoin. But you can’t go back. You will gradually grow to become either a bitcoiner, or a buttcoiner, which is what we lovingly call our passionate detractors. There’s a key difference between those two options: a typical bitcoiner believes that, someday, the price of bitcoin will eventually reach the moon, making him fabulously wealthy. The other prefers to use two rare skills found in only a few humans: Logic and Reason.

You might have noticed that I used the word “him” to describe the typical bitcoiner. This is not by accident. Over time, I have come to realize that the bitcoin community is predominantly male. I’m guessing this is because women have better things to do with their time. When I say it’s “mostly” male, it’s rather difficult to overstate this. Here are some hard numbers from a recent poll:
  • 97% Male
  • 3% Lying Male
This makes it difficult for bitcoiners to procreate, which is a good thing for everyone.

Still, bitcoin has opened up a lot of opportunities in my life. For example, the opportunity to check the price of bitcoin every day. Well, maybe a couple times per day. OK, OK, to be precise, more like every couple minutes. I thought that getting a smartwatch would make my life better, because I could check the price more often. Well, I was exactly correct, except for that part about a better life. It turns out that staring at numbers is only ninth place on the list of Top Ten Things that Make You Feel Fulfilled, just below the smell of permanent markers.

Another big opportunity that bitcoin provides is the chance to get scammed. This isn’t always pleasant, but it’s an important rite of passage for any true bitcoiner. If you haven’t been scammed yet, and you think you’re a bitcoiner, I’m sorry to say, but You’re Doing it Wrong™. In this case, I recommend that you just spread your bitcoin out on a few more exchanges, and sit back and wait for another major hack announcement. That shouldn’t take too long.

If you’re not a bitcoiner yet, then I have bad news for you. Today, a seed has been planted in your mind (hopefully not literally). When it matures, you will come to a hard fork in the road. If I may offer a piece of advice: Do not become a victim of Logic and Reason. Choose the moon. Choose bitcoin.

2. UIAs
It is confusing to have both TRADE.X and OPEN.X available as coin deposit options.  Only Openledger UIAs should be available.
What do you guys thing of updating the "Try Online Wallet" link at https://bitshares.org,  from OpenLedger to the  Bitshares branded wallet ( https://bitshares.org/wallet )? If OpenLedger offers only its own exchange UIAs, it wouldn't make sense for it to be the official Bitshares wallet link.

General Discussion / Re: Withdraw BitUSD to your bank account.

Nice video!

I was hoping for a gateway that converted directly BitUSD -> USD. Without even considering the extra fees, waiting for the confirmations on the bitcoin network makes Bitshares look slow, when it's actually one of the fastest blockchains around.  8)

  • Emergency security patches
  • Emergency network stability patches

Would you be responsible for coding these patches, should the need arise?

We have chosen a pay rate of 10,000 BTS/day for this worker. At an exchange rate of $0.004/BTS, this is roughly $1200/month or $14,500/year.
This example is a bit misleading, since the current exchange rate is actually more than 12% higher than your example. Imagine if you were interviewing for a job, and you didn't bother to mention that you expected your pay to be 12% higher than discussed. :)

This Soledger worker has been defined to last until 2017-12-31.
A full year strikes me as a long time for a BTS-denominated worker. It's almost a guarantee that the pay will be eventually quite out-of-whack. Any thoughts on this?
