General Discussion / Re: Ethereum
« on: February 22, 2014, 11:54:25 pm »
...

Dan has an economic agenda in his work and it shows. Some people like it and want it and others don't. That's fine, but it's fundamentally against the principles of Ethereum to pick winners and losers. The market will sort all of this out.

Can you explain what you mean by this?  Autonomous systems are by nature as dependent on solid economic designs as they are on competent programming.  Would you say that Satoshi Nakamoto displayed a C++ agenda in his work?  How exactly is anyone here picking winners and losers more or less than anyone else?

Try http://mypts.eu.org/?a=myaddress

It's much more informative at the moment.  The manual payout I question I can't answer.  It would be nice, but the pool owner has no obligation to do it.

When I try to do importprivkey, QT gives me:

Code: [Select]
Invalid private key (code -5)
I got the private key from another machine. And I am sure the it is correct.

Looks like there might be some checks against Bitcoin magic numbers that need to be updated...

Looks like this is probably an issue on the Windows client.

Many people are inquiring about the snapshot of the PTS blockchain. (For the BTS genesis block).
I wonder if someone might briefly clarify:

Will it occur on February 28th at 12am GMT? (meaning the beginning of the day on the 28th GMT)
Or Will it occur on March 1st at 12am GMT? (Meaning the end of the day on the 28th GMT)
Or Will it be a snapshot of the final block of the PTS blockchain on the 28th(GMT)?

Thank you in advance!

The snapshot will be of the final block on the 28th (GMT).  It will probably be generated sometime the next day, but when it's generated exactly doesn't really matter.  The crucial point is the last block included.

Can't say I understand this particular idea. Where there is relative poverty, there will always be crime and violence. I hope I'm wrong.

More generally, where there are imperfect humans there will be crime and violence.  The question is how to minimize it without participating in crime (by which I mean the violation of rights) or initiating violence.

o.k. snapshot-date = 2014-02-28
for PTS and AGS?
what about the PTS mined after the 28th of february?
that PTS will only count for the next DAC - with a new snapshot-date?
is the AGS-generation closed at this date - though the donations to get AGS?

Correct.  PTS mined after the snapshot and AGS for donations after the snapshot will be relevant for future DACs released after BitSharesX.

did i get it right, that the 28th of february is NOT a test of the bitshare-system with all the pts and ags around it?
is it the real launch-date for bitshares?

Not launch date, but snapshot date.  You won't get the BitSharesX software then, but you need to have all your AGS donations in and all your PTS in a wallet you control by then in order to get BTS from them when the launch occurs.

Ive downloaded the new wallet by the way I just need instruction on the other stuff.

What OS are you on?  And have you run the new wallet?  Running the wallet the first time will create its settings files.

If you're on Win7, and your main OS drive is C:, go to C:\Users\[your_username_here]\AppData\Roaming

The AppData folder will likely be hidden, but if you type the above in the location bar with your windows username substituted it should take you there.

In that folder, you should see a folder named "BitShares-PTS" and one named "ProtoShares".  Open the ProtoShares folder, copy the wallet.dat file, and then go to the BitShares-PTS folder and paste it there.

After doing this, you should see your old balance when you run the new BitShares-PTS application.

General Discussion / Re: Will donated PTS also generate BTS?
« on: February 19, 2014, 04:45:31 am »
The AGS address shares will produce BTS, but these BTS will be used for further bounties and development just like the PTS.  This will increase value for investors.

EDIT: Source is https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=2666.msg33851#msg33851

Any DAC stake held by the AngelShares PTS address will be claimed for use in bounties the same as directly donated BTC and PTS, correct?

Yes, all funds raised directly or indirectly from the AGS addresses will be put toward the development of DACs.

just to clarify.
on 28 february i have my pts wallet [Protoshares-Qt vp0.4.0] with some Pts inside.
To claim Bitshare, on 1 march i install bitshare-Pts wallet [BitShares-PTS v1.0.0].
How to procede to get bitsahre and see coins in bitshare-Pts wallet [BitShares-PTS v1.0.0]?
thankyou very much for the explanation!!!

This release is just an update to your current "ProtoShares" wallet.  You don't need to wait until after the 28th to switch to the new version.  This version gets rid of the lingering "Protoshares" name in favor of BitShares-PTS, since "Protoshares" turns out to be trademarked by someone else as the name of their entirely unrelated product.

After installing the new wallet, you will need to copy the "wallet.dat" file from your [username]\AppData\Protoshares directory into the new [username]\AppData\BitShares-PTS directory.

General Discussion / Re: Why should a DAC be profitable?

So just like Apple cannot charge $1 million dollars for a laptop and claim 99.999% profit, a DAC cannot charge excessive fees or it will be undercut by a competitor.

Your point falls apart right there.  Apple charges whatever they want, and inexplicably people pay it.   ;D

Taxes were important because in a time of war it's more ethical to tax people and pay for the war than to not pay for the war.

Forcing one person to pay for a war they want nothing to do with is hardly ethical.   Without taxes there could be no war.  Thus taxes are the root cause of war and the reason why we do not have world peace.

A ruler-less society cannot be conquered by an invading army without genocide because the people would not be conditioned to accept a new authority.

There are arguably plenty of charismatic leaders who would jump at the chance to commit genocide, and who are quite capable of recruiting followers with or without the support of an established government.  That said, with access to better communication regarding such situations, there are also arguably plenty of people willing to stand up to such people with or without the support of an established government.
