General Discussion / Re: At least BTS outlasted NuShares
« on: June 12, 2016, 06:09:45 pm »
[I'm watching the same wrong thinking play out in Steem. Paying for users by share-dropping and hoping your highly illiquid start-up DAC will absorb the cost, (A strategy that has failed a hundred times + in crypto) to compound their error they're share-dropping/awarding stable currency so the size of that burden in dollar terms they've paid to acquire users stays the same even as the share price craters.

I think the Steem experiment is trying to find out, if value in content-creation is enough to make the Steem social network valuable enough, that the general public will want to support and become part of steem.

This is why there is a delay until July 4th.  We have to fill steem with good quality (and valuable) content, that makes it into Google's search results.

Unlike other places like Yahoo answers and About.com, which are full of ads and annoying to read, this is a completely different business model than can serve a similar benefit.

Personally, I think the July 4th launch date is very premature.  We need an additional 6 months, maybe longer.

P.S. I know we're considering reddit as a lateral solution to steem.  But some mention of facebook is there too. Without those stupid flash games that has everyone addicted, steem will never attract much of the facebook crowd ?

What I dont like is our people here n on steem saying their ship went down that bitshares n steem is better...do we really need it?

This thread has nothing to do with that..  It is enjoying a sense of humor that nu had. Don't worry.

We're all on the same cruise ship, just in different areas. :)

General Discussion / Re: Video preview: Buying Bitshares the Easy Way
« on: June 12, 2016, 05:59:34 pm »
I'm posting this to open up feedback on an upcoming video: Buying Bitshares the Easy Way.

I understand how UIA trade.BTC works.

My question is that once you have trade.BTC, obviously you can have it converted back to BTC

BUT

What if you want to convert trade.BTC to BTS or OPEN.POS, and there is no buyers for trade.BTC ?  Do you become a holder of trade.BTC and either hold it longer than you'd like, or take a possible loss to reverse it back to BTC and go back to a centralized exchange to change it immediately?

How much trade.BTC buys requests are waiting, and how much faith and trust is there in holding trade.BTC?  How liquid is it?

When people move their "precious" BTC in to trade.BTC, there must be some cause of concern that prevents a lot of people from wanting to go that route, at least, until the Bitshares exchange has more volume?

Saw this in Nushares chat today, referencing an old Sep 2015 custodial grant request

Dear shareholders,

As the network grows it will be imperative that we use any means necessary to help defend the peg. We have seen baseless attacks from various competing communities and we should position ourselves to withstand these attacks. I'm submitting a custodial grant to purchase a 2S1 Military tank from http://www.mortarinvestments.eu9. Here is the direct page6.

Included in the grant is the cost of purchasing the tank, demilitarizing the tank, getting a permit from the ATF to import it, costs of importing, black market remilitarizing, and shipping to park across the street from the Bitshares office with a giant NuBits flag posted on top. I cannot promise a timeline for all of this to be completed due to the various nuances of the plan described above. Be assured that it will be driven to completion with haste to the best of my abilities.

I appreciate their jest. :)  It's good to have a sense of humor all the way around.

Ugh, I can't take it anymore, and have to say something. :)

That mic resembles a big male organ and is distracting, especially when it is closer to the camera than you are..

Is there a BitShares logo you can paste infront of it, or something else while you talk, so it re-iterates what the subject matter is?  This way the mic becomes less of a focal point, and we can concentrate on what you're saying.

With a video editor you can put a graphical overlay to hide it.

Or with a piece of paper and a colored printed image, you could just paste it on it.

I think it's one of the reasons mainstream media has logos on their microphones too.

Does this even count as a victory for BitShares? Given its current state

Crypto thinks its competing against itself, and it may very well be..

However, if you look outside of the box, we're not even making a tiny dent in the real fiat market, and that's all crypto technologies combined.

So, a victory?  I don't think so. No more than if BitUSD fell, it wouldn't be a victory for Nubits either.

Technical Support / Is there no 32-bit Windows lightclient?
« on: June 08, 2016, 04:50:51 pm »

Sometimes when I am away from my main computer, I use one of these tiny 7" mobile notebooks that is 32-bit on Windows 7 starter

I downloaded and installed this:

https://github.com/bitshares/bitshares-2/releases/download/2.0.160514/BitShares-light_2.0.160514.exe

Everything went smoothly including the install, until I tried to run the program.

Windows Error:

"The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows that you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you require an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the system publisher"

I know I can get a web wallet.  I just hate depending on websites in case they go down or offline.

Would be nice if the github description explicitly said "64-bit" next to the Windows client, so I didn't have to download and install the whole thing, only to find out it doesn't work. :)

General Discussion / 404 Broken link on bitshares.org/download
« on: June 08, 2016, 04:21:36 pm »

I did a google search for Bitshares wallet, google pointed me here:

http://bitshares.org/download/

I click "Windows"

It sends me to this link:

404 - file not found

https://github.com/bitshares/bitshares-2/releases/download/2.0.160524b/BitShares-light_2.0.160524b.exe

That can't be good.  We're showing a 404 when people want to download a wallet.

General Discussion / Re: [Video] Intro to Bitshares
« on: June 08, 2016, 04:17:36 pm »

I like the video.  I do treasure those 2-3 second pauses, before moving forward.

Maybe if he had a small (quiet) sip of coffee before continuing to the next part, that would be enough for some of us to have that little pause to think and then go, "ok, I am following. hmm. yes, I get it".. and then together we move on to the next part.

Also not everyone has english as their first language, eventhough most people can still follow an english video if it is not rushed.

One of my largest pet peeves (lol), since we're on the subject, is those beyondbitcoin talks where the speaker (like in Peerplays) is constantly studdering with lots of "um, um, um, um" this and "and and and and" that...

As key people who are promoting BTS and related things, quite often it is easy to put the material out there. I find very rarely do speakers or videographers re-watch their video, or listen to their archived mumble session 3 or 4 times and realize..

Wow, if I had just paused inbetween my sentences, even for 2 or 3 seconds before moving on, how that might have helped.  I know the urge is to unload the information in my mind as quick as possible, and get to the point.  The problem is that it comes off as "unloading information", and we don't want to feel like we're delivering an avalanche of information, eventhough that is the end goal.

It can't seem like an avalanche of information.  So breathe, take time to pause, the audience will digest better.

So my question is, does a comprehensive and up to date video like this exist?  If not, why not?
Ironically, you have to vote to make it happen.  :P

Which is a real problem.  More than it being a ironic situation, it's a real sick situation.

These are key elements of the Bitshares system, and part of the launch, these needed to be already prepared before letting this system into the wild.

You don't build a system, and hope that people will figure out how to use it.

Text documentation and forum postings only go so far.  Reading, and visualizing in your mind isn't as effective.

We really need some video tutorials, so people understand how the system works, so it lowers the barrier to entry as well as lowers the barrier to ongoing and active participation.

Watching a video, is much easier to acquaint yourself, and makes the process much easier.   I see the person do it on video.  I can repeat similar steps myself.

This is extremely important and where the Bitshares system has an emergency until it is corrected.

Chronos, I do like your videos.  However you shouldn't be the only leader in this space.   I'd like to see others join you in this as well.

It's one of the reasons that webinars have multiple speakers.  They compliment each other and give a more well rounded experience.

is it possible to add some economic incentive for voting?  for example is it possible to give voters some reward when the voted witness generate a new block? even a little reward can encourage voting.

Thought experiment:

Suppose every account had a knob we could turn increasing their pay until they were incentivized to take the time to vote.
One would assume that at that price they are still not incentivized to take the time to become suitably informed to vote.

I'm someone who doesn't vote.  I don't understand voting, and it is not because I am not incentivized to do so.

I did try it once, but couldn't fully figure it out.  This was about 8 months ago, and I gave up.

In order to vote, I realized I had to run around the forums looking for posts from people who wanted me to vote for them.   I finally figured I'd vote for fuzzy because I know him, and after listening to a beyond bitshares episode.   I tried doing a proxy vote, and still don't think I did it right, because when I went to the bts explorer, it says I have no votes.

Voting is new to me, and the importance is still sketchy.  I, like many others, probably feel, that the knowledgable are already voting, so my vote doesn't matter.

I admit, I'm not knowledgable enough to vote.

I'm one of the people that needs something to incentivize me, and it's more than an economic benefit.

I need the education and resources to do it.

What that means, is if there was a video tutorial on youtube, that says..

Ok, folks, if you are a Bitshares holder, this is how you vote, why you want to vote, and how to change your vote.

Let's begin.

First of all, I fire up my Bitshares light client, and I see where to vote.  Now before I vote, I want to decide who to vote for.  So then I do this, and read that.

Now that I'm ready to vote, I do this...

Now let's say it's a month later, and the person I voted for turned into a frog.  Ok, this is how I go and find a new person to vote for, and change my vote.

Voting is something you should check and change every X days or weeks.   If you don't, you could be innocently contributing to the problem with Bitshares growth and your own investment.

....

So my question is, does a comprehensive and up to date video like this exist?  If not, why not?

I am currently working full time on business development for BitShares (with many people you all know) providing the very services you imply I have abandoned.

Shame on you for speaking, whether with malicious intent or careless neglect, to harm others reputations about things going on Behind the Scenes of which you know nothing.

I have comments for both of you:

Stan, that's impressive. That's good news that you're working on business development for Bitshares like that, thank you for your effort.  In the future, many of us will really thank you.   Please don't get discouraged.

Empiricle, you obviously hit a sore spot with that April 19th quote.  It's now June.  Things change, can change, will change.

This is a never ending issue:  When Dan & Stan talk too much, they get in trouble by the community.  When they go silent, they get in trouble by the community. Finally, when they do say "a little", it's given too much focus from posters who keep quoting their words and using it against them on an ongoing basis.

Let's concentrate on today going forward.  We're all interested in things improving, and I see good things on the horizon already.

I know I've said things that I look back a year later, and have changed my mind from the first time I said something.  That's human behavior.  Stan and Dan aren't machines.  They're human too.  Give them a little breathing room and let's not run them out of town.

The over riding theme here seems to be to try to generate some ideas on how we can make the bitshares token more valuable.

I disagree.   While that's a nice bonus, I think it's more involved in that..

I agree that a rebrand could be helpful, and calling it simply DEX is a great way to hammer home what it is. BitShares was quite confusing.

I've been following Bitshares ever since AGS.  I'm still confused, and I shouldn't need to spend a month learning and practicing how to use something properly.

As a DEX, at least at this stage, I get it.

Every wonder why Microsoft hides menus and settings behind an "ADVANCED" button or tab?

That's where other non DEX components should live.   We should roll out as a DEX, do that well, and then after you get the network effect and popularity, you can say "by the way....  we also have these too..."

Microsoft Outlook to this day, is principally an e-mail program.  Yes, it can do reminders, notes, calendars, etc, etc.  But most people recognize it for it's main purpose.

Bitshares has a similar problem.  We need it first and foremost to be a DEX and instantly recognized, and utilized this way.

59
I'd like to offer the community my perspective

[...]

For me, decentralization means that we can survive when a leader is gone, but still we cannot move forward without having one.

[..]

we should definitely scrap the name "BitShares" and replace it with something more neutral (e.g. "DEX")

100% agree on these two "critical" points.  If both of these do not occur in the next couple of months (which is equal to 2 years in normal life), we're going to be hurting pretty bad.

This isn't something to just throw out there and hope something works out.  We need a plan to get both done.

I suggest we begin by coming up with a roster of people who are most willing to help with these two things, and then let the community decide on which of them are most capable (based on historical follow through and devotion).

Once we pick our top 5 as a task force, then can let us know what equitable and fair compensation is requested, and we can then create a fund raising user issued asset to fund it.

If someone has anything better, I'm interested.

For something like this, I would have expected a bigger more prominent well planned out launch across media outlets etc.

If it was me, I'd delete this thread, and re-announce with a "major" cross-media announce when the scan feature is ready and after the system has gone through a quiet, private, beta test with some actual retailers who would like to be part of the news release.
