What could be better/safer than a decentralized collateralized USD derivative? ;-)

Yes, they will need your password and a copy of your wallet.

If you change your password at some point, your old backups are not affected by this change and will continue to use the old password.

Exactly. So a bitshares wallet is vulnerable since you can only run a hot wallet. It's no good for bitshares if we are trying to stand out as a decentralized market which is safe from the hacking that happens to centralized exchanges.  If we want Bitstamp, Kraken etc to accept BTS and bitUSD and act as gateway exchanges then with the existing client those companies are going to have no user friendly cold wallet features. Right now their bitshares balances would be over-exposed versus bitcoin balances which can be managed via cold wallet features.

The problem with Speedy's solution is that the wallet only remains cold until one need's to make a transfer. The only way to transfer is to make the cold wallet hot thereby breaking security. There needs to be cold/hot wallet splitting and offline signing features.

To be clear, It is cool to point out the benefits of bts.  In fact I would say it is critical.  I am just saying being tactful.

Dont say bitshares is better.  Say bitshares is better in this instance.
Say bitcoins does this great while bitshares does that great.

Its just the principles in the classic. "How to win friends and influence people."

But it is all kind of heightened by a factor of ten because if you can make it pro bitcoin you will get 10 times the eyeballs.

I totally agree with you as a PR strategy. It extends further though into maturing the software features that bitcoin users need: Bitcoin users need bitshares bitAssets.

I am a hardcore bitcoiner who has never invested in any other alt-crypto until a few weeks ago I got really interested in bitshares. I would say that it wasn't I chose bitshares but rather *I didn't have any choice but bitshares*. Learning about the bitshares network security helped. Bitshares is the only way I know of to diversify bitcoin into FIAT without entering a centralized counter party risk system. The bitAssets CFD pools are the only decentralized option that is functional today. Bitcoin users need fiat diversification now. So everytime there is short term volatility in bitcoin or a failure such as Gox/Stamp, bitcoiners will go on the lookout for fiat diversification options. Bitshares is standing there with open arms ready to solve their problems via a decentralized network.

The biggest problem I have with bitshares today is its lacking cold wallet functionality. I could x10 my bitshares investment overnight if there was a cold wallet feature that could sign offline transactions and a hot wallet that could broadcast them. Alternatively OTP support in the client would help. Unfortunately now I have to just sit on the sidelines and wait. In the meantime perhaps other options will come up that overtake bitshares.

This is the bitshares race. I recently downloaded the bitShares android app from these forms which seems to work great. Also I tried one of the btc/bitshares gateways you mentioned earlier and it worked! I would love to see a fully client side bitshares webwallet people could download and run locally in their browser with cold and hot wallet features. The existing software is 90% there but the final 10% missing security features are critical.

These development features lay down bridges that invite bitcoiners to cross over into bitsharesland whenever there is turmoil in the bitcoin kingdom. There are still some critical bridges that aren't fully matured which means bitcoiners who come to them may think twice before crossing. The bridges needs to be strong, smooth, shiny and straight as possible to maximize rapid conversion.

Thanks for your replies. Yes what I meant by that sentence was a cold wallet that supports offline signing and then manual loading into a hot wallet for transfer. The existing cold storage solution doesn't have a method to do that as far as I understand. Speedy's solution is good enough security though not too easy for the newbies that we hope will be rushing into bitshares soon. I understand 2 factor OTP authentication is a simple and strong option. I'm sure the devs are working on these features as we speak but until then the bts in-flows will be restricted. After all a secure setup is the first hurdle an investor needs to clear.

General Discussion / I want to buy more BTS but .....Fear of being hacked
« on: January 08, 2015, 12:00:39 am »
Its hard to buy more BTS cause I am scared of being hacked.  ???

Is there OTP authentication support?
Is there easy cold wallet setup that you can spend from via hot wallet?

I don't understand how delegate slates work.
There is an option in the client under MyAccounts>Vote "Vote as My Delegates Recommend"
But I don't know how to look up what the slate recommendations are?
Can someone please explain how to pick a particular slate in the client - do you just vote for 1 delegate who is running the slate you like?
Where are the slate debates?

Thanks.

Would this potential bitcoin hard fork change that?
http://gavintech.blogspot.co.uk/2015/01/looking-before-scaling-up-leap.html

I think you have to expect they will figure it out one way or the other. There is so much investment it bitcoin it will be adapted to the will of the users where possible. The creative incentives are strong. So the opportunity for bitshares is to stay in the wings as the alt-crypto (with extras) of choice. When the bitcoin network shows up with fails (e.g. MtGox/Bitstamp) or fails to adapt quickly enough, bitshares should be there wearing a smile big enough to post the constitution through.  :D

Would love to see a bitXCP/BTS market. Means we don't have to sell BTS to get XCP exposure.

+5% I've been following your videos for a while on bitcoin and now bitshares and your videos have helped me make the move over to bitshares.

Thanks. I am using ufw and it had a default rule:
444:65535/tcp DENY OUT Anywhere

When I tried to edit it I got an error saying its an "immutable" rule created by ufw.
So I deleted the rule and now everything works fine.

Do you think I need that rule or am I safe without it?

In order to get the BitShares client connecting on linux I had to create firewall rules for ports 1776.

But that is not enough. It seems that to bootstap the connection a random port is used before the client settles to port 1776.
I'm not great with network admin and need help. At the moment I have to momentarily turn the firewall off/on in order for the client to connect which sucks.

Does any know the correct way to config a firewall for the QT client?
