Technical Support / Re: Wallet Backup Procedure - Best Practice?
« on: January 07, 2015, 10:26:38 am »
http://www.aboutbts.com/2014/12/how-to-backup-and-restore-your-bitshares-wallet.html
Thanks. That backup procedure requires copying and pasting the correct wallet folder. Is that best practice atm? If so that's a concern to me.

Can anyone confirm whether backing up the "BitShares Wallet Backup.json" via the client menu option File > Export Wallet is a deterministic seed backup?

http://wiki.bitshares.org/index.php/Best_Practices/Cold_Storage

Thanks. This cold storage solution doesn't include
1) how to create a watching only wallet
2) how to sign offline transactions and broadcast them

So it looks as if a proper cold wallet feature is not available in BTS yet.

At least if the client had OTP 2-factor authentication. Hmmmm......  :-\

Technical Support / Re: The account is not voting with some of its stake

In a way its cool because it lets me know that I can do voting which otherwise isn't very obvious.
Perhaps if it just said how many out of 101 votes are missing. Example:

"You have 93 of 101 Top Delegate votes missing. In order to ensure your network fees reward the best delegates go to the Delegates page to complete voting."

For me learning that delegates are working for the bitshares network beyond just transaction processing was a big point in converting me to bitshares. So in the client the whole voting thing should be more obvious not less. An explanation of the opportunity BTS owners have to learn and vote about delegates plus a slate voting console would be ideal.

All bitcoin exchanges should have multi-sig client accounts but they ought to require clients pre-sign margin calls and other administrative transactions. Then those held transactions are only broadcasted if the administrative event happens. In this way exchanges could not be hacked and if they were all hackers could do is broadcast the pre-signed administrative transactions which wouldn't benefit them.

Bitshares owners could fund development of such solutions by voting for the right Top Delegates and perhaps voluntarily paying higher transaction fees.

Random Discussion / Re: Why 101 Delegates? Why not 1001?

I finally got to the part where bytemaster and merockstar are talking about a sweet spot in the size of the Top Delegate pool here:

The big part about the incentives system that really wins me over is figuring out that Top Delegates are incentivized to do more than just process transactions. When I figured out that delegates compete with each other and may set their pay rate below 100% the penny dropped.

From what I understand so far, I expect that the Top Delegates pool will be increased beyond 101 as bitshares owners realize paying HIGHER transaction fees can increase Top Delegate output. A Top Delegate spot is the ideal way for bitshares owners to crowd fund bitshares crypto projects. Given the vast nature of apps that could be developed in bitshares, this goes way beyond a cypto-currency, its a crypto-socio-political system.

Those links are interesting thanks. I understood from there that 101 delegates is chosen based upon a 100x transaction fee being viable to compete with other payment processing systems. One line the chart doesn't show is the fees moving inverse to the profit line ie. increasing with the x axis delegate count.

I believe BM once said 101 was an upper bound in terms of efficiency, but with improving technology it could potentially be increased in the future.

I think increasing the 101 bound will be absolutely necessary given each top delegate spot could be taken by the same entity and tech costs are always falling and decentralization is always desired. So perhaps the Top Delegates pool should be a dynamic number instead of fixed?

Does it require a hard fork to change that number at the moment?

Ahhh I see thanks.

Is there a special name given to these top 101 delegates?
What would be the process for expanding the number? Is it very difficult?
I guess its not dynamic atm and a hard fork is required?

<Side note: If stakeholders should know all the top delegates then it would be a useful feature for the client facilitated pointing to delegate websites and perhaps email/secured chat. >

I'd say the very structure of reality is hierarchical. The process of sensory input in the brain certainly is, and even our best sciences seems layered in levels, such as particle physics -> chemistry -> biology -> psychology; something like this is true for technological innovation as well, there is a telescopic effect, the macro builds on the micro innovations, and larger sized objects form condensed laws that while not as general, often govern the course of things down below. In essence a hierarchy can compress a range of information, which makes reality as a whole parsimonious, in the sense that it can exhibit a great diversity of events with less effort, sort of like language can by the structure of grammar exhibit great diversity by combining condensed information-packets of meanings with near-general grammatical combination laws.

Perhaps this part is wrong "and larger sized objects form condensed laws that while not as general, often govern the course of things down below.".

Since it goes both ways: "and smaller sized objects form condensed laws that while not as general, often govern the course of things above."?

Therefore the point is moot. Although hierarchical layers exist in the structure of reality, I see the deeper structure of reality being distributed. Wherein hierarchy and symmetry only form amongst the distributed elements by symbiotic alignment with the flow of energy between things which is very, very particular. The whole structure looks like a merger between "particles" versus "containers" yet these categories vary according to one's perspective. Perfectly enough from the deepest particle perspective or the outermost container perspective your arrive at the same place, of neither particle or container: the source of the flow of energy between things. Reality is basically a single super-organism. Which is funny since that makes science the study of God. haha

Can I ask what was the aha moment that got you into BitShares?

I've been learning about bitshares for a while. The bitUSD, bitGOLD assets I had been wishing for and I saw the bitshares was the first to do it the way I imagined it should be done. But the aha moment for me was this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yrif9uThwSY&index=4&list=PLjgfpSQFJTLqbgHm8mkgPdD-ma7t0bRhK

once I understood the incentives system for delegates more completely I was ready. Also hearing Max Wright and Dan Larimer speak about it further consolidated my decision. I'm still concerned about a few questions and if the answers are right I will get more into bitshares.

I used bter at first then upgraded to bct38.Welcome

In addition to the ah-ha moment question, Where did you hear about us from?

I've been watching the list here as bitshares became visible I started looking into it.

Random Discussion / Why 101 Delegates? Why not 1001?
« on: January 06, 2015, 10:02:26 am »
The way I currently understand it 101 delegates seems like very few. Given that some delegates could actually be the same person that means that <101 people are acting as delegates.

That seems like a very small number of people. If all their identities were known could that be a security concern?
Why not make it 1001 or 10001 delegates?

Technical Support / The account is not voting with some of its stake
« on: January 05, 2015, 10:52:14 pm »
I see a exclamation message near my account:
"The account is not voting with some of its stake. Consider updating your vote."

I figure I should go to the Delegates area and THUMBS UP delegates that I like. But I don't know how many times I should do this.

Is there a way I can see how much "stake" I have and what portion is still "unvoted"?

Can I communicate with delegates through the client?

Technical Support / Wallet Backup Procedure - Best Practice?
« on: January 05, 2015, 10:24:22 pm »
Can someone please advise as to the best practice for backing up the bitshares wallet?

Is it as simple as exporting the wallet JSON file?

Is there an option to create a brain wallet (like Electrum for bitcoin) ?

Is there a method for creating a cold wallet?

Technical Support / I want to buy BTS without using BTER
« on: January 05, 2015, 12:25:21 pm »
I've finally been convinced by the BTS tech. So I want to shift a large portion of my BTC into BTS.
My hope is I can do it without registering with BTER or other 3rd party exchanges, but I need help.

I am trying the BTC>BTS gateway by:
julian1-delegate
https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=12527.30

and waiting for the gateway by:
dev-metaexchange.monsterer
https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=12317.msg169360#msg169360

Are there any other options?
Is it safer to trust a delegate versus a 3rd party exchange like BTER?
Also looking for general advice if there other important things I may be overlooking?

Thanks.

Hi I started with BTC then received GATEBTC but I am a newbie and can't figure out how to sell it for BTS. I am getting an error saying I don't have enough funds to list my SELL offer on the GATEBTC/BTS market.

Do I need BTS to sell GATEBTC for BTS?
