General Discussion / [STEEM X-POST]: Take a Step Back
« on: July 20, 2016, 09:32:25 am »
This one consists of a few musing and observations that I noticed in myself while beginning my "steemit career".

Earnings will help support the series of pro-bitshares articles that have been cooking inside my mind - I'm really pumped up with steemit at the moment and brainstorming ways to synergize with bitshares several hours a day!

General Discussion / [STEEM] SteemUSD withdrawal options?
« on: July 19, 2016, 08:47:06 am »
Since at least yesterday it has not been possible to withdraw SBD for BTC via blocktrades.

I could not find an announcement about this, nor an estimate of the downtime for the pair - or indeed, whether this is permanent or not.

It's possible that I missed such an announcement completely.

A quick search over OpenLedger appears to reveal that they do not support SBD<->BTC either.

Any other options that you know of?

General Discussion / [STEEM] Slack invitation?
« on: July 15, 2016, 07:18:51 am »
It seems registration on steem slack (or is it slack steem? or steemy slacking? anyway..) is no longer possible unless the email address is on a few select domains.

Who do I contact to get in now?

Seems to be harder these days for new posts from little fish to gain traction ... perhaps something to do with the change in voting rewards and the 30 minute thing?

Technical Support / How could we capture some of steemits' userbase?
« on: July 14, 2016, 08:43:08 am »
As Steemit introduces thousands to crypto, it's been on my mind to leverage steemits' growth and somehow translate that to an increase of users for bitshares as well.

So far I'm coming up pretty blank, I mean, SBD even pay interest ..

Some less obvious things are promoting bitshares as a platform where steemit users could get price exposition to gold/silver, and to hedge in other fiats as well (I've always thought that a forex market based on smartcoins here on bitshares would be a great use case).

Help me out here. You're a crypto-clueless user, now banking some SteemUSD .. what do you need Bitshares for?

Technical Support / IPv6 support?
« on: June 29, 2016, 02:21:02 pm »
How's the status of IPv6 support in graphene?

Relevant and related question, will a witness_node horribly break if it cannot reach a good portion of the network (say ipv6 support is there, but only 10% other nodes run on ipv6, and this witness_node can only talk ipv6) ?

Technical Support / The case for bitGOLD and bitSILVER
« on: June 27, 2016, 09:49:40 am »
https://steemit.com/beyondbitcoin/@karnal/the-case-for-bitgold-and-bitsilver

Just in case things had changed in the mean time, I opened the bitshares client to confirm that the situation in these markets is still bleak.

(It is).

Some of you may not have noticed, but the people at https://digix.io/ have slowly been gaining traction in the ethereum space. If you don't know them, essentially they have a DGX token, which is backed by real gold, secured in a vault they control. There's some fancy proof of audit (by a 3rd party) scheme going on as well, not worth going into.

There's also the DGD token, which pays quarterly dividends (!) for hodlers, the funds come from DGX transfer fees.

They're aiming to use "gold as money" online, and being a frequent lurker in their slack, I can tell you that their concerns about fraud are keeping the company on edge -- just you wait until DGX begins being used for illegal activity .. in their case, there IS a central company the "authorities" can go after.

In fact, Digix recently announced that they'll be requiring KYC/AML documents (yet another company that can pull identity theft on you, fantastic!) for simply purchasing DGX at their exchange (https://app.digix.io) !

Now, of course, one can simply pull the DGX from another source (DGX will likely be available at shapeshift, poloniex, in the near (<3mo? guesstimation) future.

But it speaks volumes about the bind they've got themselves into.

Now, when people ask me about gold and silver, I give them the standard answer that unless you have the real physical deal, then you don't really own it. And to a large extent, I still stand by that.

But these tokenised assets in the blockchain do, I believe, bring something new to the game .. it is considerably different to own a gold etf, backed by empty promises, and which may or may not be redeemed for fiat at a time of your choosing, and owning a "gold etf-token" in the blockchain .. which, provided there is enough liquidity, traders can always get rid of, or acquire, at will.

I believe we're missing on a giant piece of the cake here, by not having these markets liquid. Sure, fiat currency mpa are also fine for this, but many people (yours truly included) like having some considerable hedging for them with metals.

We can position ourselves - favorably, even - against Digix. Other than dividends, Bitshares does everything their platform does, and at least as far as I can see, better. Our DGD is BTS, our DGX is bitGold.

If only BTS paid dividends :) But I digress.. and I don't think that by itself, that's enough reason to say Digix is a superior solution.

Of course there is no real gold behind bitGold, so there is that, some people will be turned off by that, others (who just want price exposition) couldn't care less. There's plenty of space for healthy competition, and while there is significant overlap in what DGX and bitGold can offer (mainly using gold for trading / saving online), each solution has its own unique advantages and disadvantages as well.

I do believe we are not making enough (any) of an effort to let this be known.

While Digix is gaining slow but very steady traction in the ethereum camp, how many people outside of Bitshares know of bitGold and bitSilver?
(also, can we have bitPalladium? :])

Hell, later on we can even get together and scheme for a shiny plastic gold card, and market it as "the gold-backed debit card!!oneone" .. people will go crazy. Crazy, I tell you.

I think OUR platform is much better for what they're trying to achieve (it has nothing to do with having been brainwashed by the cult of Bitshares! I promise!).

I think that if we mount a coordinated marketing campaign, make some pretty websites, and maybe get a few people together to brainstorm getting that plastic card going, there might be something here.

There's also liquidity, of course, but since we already have the bot infrastructure, it's "only" a matter of putting some pooled funds into them (could we obtain them from a worker proposal?)

Let me know what you think ..

In this particular case it was no problem to link the accounts (via the registration fee), but turns out only lifetime members can register accounts (heh).

Is it possible in other way, to have more than one account in the wallet? (w/o importing keys that are not derived)

General Discussion / Unclear future, missed opportunities
« on: April 26, 2016, 03:20:18 pm »
It saddens me to see that after half a year since the 2.0 launch there is still no possibility for privacy.

It saddens me that there are so little options and in so little currencies to get in and out of bitshares.

It saddens me that, at some point, it became acceptable to use centralized UIAs instead of Smartcoins, re-introducing the counterparty risk that was so hailed against before.

It saddens me that simple UI bugs such as the equivalent in FIAT being outrageously wrong in many cases (and what's up with the N/As?), or hovering the mouse near the ok at the lower right corner shows a "blockchain is synced" (something to that extent) message even though right next to it there's a giant red warning saying the blockchain isn't synced. .. or the horrible loop of "Application initialization issues" .. with zero visual feedback and zero error messages to help troubleshoot (was it a connect timeout? was it a socket read/write timeout? did dns resolution fail?)

..that good suggestions (https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php/topic,21908.0.html) for UI improvement go unanswered.

..that simple bugs (https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php/topic,21053.msg272866.html#msg272866) go unresolved, and end up yielding what is essentially a 100% linux-based network .. https://freedom-to-tinker.com/blog/kroll/software-transparency-debian-openssl-bug/

.. that access to the forum is made unecessarily difficult for privacy-conscious users .. https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php/topic,21695.msg290904.html

.. that, while in the subject of privacy, zero effort has been put forth to implement proxying support in the light client .. coupled with the absolute lack of financial privacy in the platform, and considering that at this stage most bitshares users are necessarily crypto enthusiasts, I'd bet this is keeping thousands of users at bay ..

Bitshares could be THE platform for FOREX trading, yet Smartcoins mostly go unused.
.. and the absolute lack of privacy will keep most traders at bay.

Bitshares could be THE platform for DIY banking, yet Smartcoins mostly go unused.
.. and the absolute lack of privacy will keep most users at bay.

All these ideas and suggestions being thrown around here... and all this time, I ask myself... does it really have to be any more complicated than allowing traders, savers and investors to manage their own finances without the need for a third party, and do so privately ?

The banks have failed us. Bitshares could've been the answer. Unfortunately, it appears to drift further and further away from that every month ..

Increasingly I find the prospect of a future powered by Bitshares, Smartcoin-backed debit cards, FOREX trading on the DEX, and Smartcoin-backed online payments, remote..

And that's a damn shame.

General Discussion / BTC/BitBTC bridge?
« on: March 19, 2016, 11:30:52 am »
Was just wondering why the BTC:{USD,EUR,CNY} markets have 0.00 volume and that led to finding the shortest way to convert BTC to BitBTC at this moment.

Metaexchange used to have it but it seems to not be there anymore?

Likewise, Blocktrades no longer seems to offer the pair either.. (only to OPEN.BSD and TRADE.BTC)

How do you flip your BTC to BitBTC?

Wouldn't this be an excellent path into the ecosystem? Hundreds of thousands are already familiar with BTC.
