If these have been answered elsewhere could you point to the source ?

- Will it have built-in TOTP support (2fa)?
- If yes, for which operations? [login, withdrawals, etc]

- Is it a pure brain-wallet like in NXT?
- If not, where is the wallet information stored ? Client/browser or server?

- Can a malicious server operator patch the javascript to steal user credentials and impersonate them ?
- If a wallet server is compromised, do users with wallets there get mtgoxed?

- Is SOCKS5/HTTP proxying baked in the 2.0 wallet/daemon? [connect to rpc server via proxy | connect to other peers via proxy]

Technical Support / Privacy (developers click me!)
« on: June 09, 2015, 10:49:42 pm »
https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php/topic,16780.msg215213.html#msg215213

I'm concerned that this would get lost in the above thread, as it's not the main topic. So I am opening this thread in order to hopefully get some feedback from the developers regarding privacy (or the lack of it) in BTS 2.0.

1. What is wrong with TITAN ('illusion of privacy'), were the reasons discussed (and if yes, where?), and are the flaws fatal?

2. Is a replacement system being worked on ?

3. Is privacy a goal or high priority item in BTS 2.0 ?

I am deeply concerned about the eventuality that no thought has been given to privacy, in my opinion full transparency on these matters is the road to economic totalitarianism. Especially so on a blockchain.

I'm very strongly against the whole world now and forever knowing the full state of my economic affairs. That is a private matter that concerns me and a few other people. Surely many other shareholders feel the same. At least I hope so!

Technical Support / Proxy support
« on: June 04, 2015, 09:38:38 pm »
Hello,

Is anyone close to the dev team (or part of) able to comment on whether adding proxy support (esp. HTTP/SOCKS5) is on the pipeline?

There are ways around it but a non technical user doesn't have a chance..

Surely in many corporate environments a proxy is a necessity.

79
Has this been discussed before? Surely it must have.

Was/is anyone working on cooperating with exchanges to implement the pairs?

:)

Wonder what's up with all the greed.. lowest sell is 46000 while call price is 38910.

I'm looking to buy 4 bitBTC (0.5, 0.5, 2, 1). Placed the orders close to the call price.

If you're in for a fair trade, press that button:)

Technical Support / DDoSing the BitShares network
« on: May 21, 2015, 09:42:40 pm »
If my understanding is correct, it would be possible to disable the network by DDoSing the 101 (virtual)machines signing blocks.

101 targets is not that much, and most of our delegates are probably running on virtual machines with little resources to spare against attack.

Heck, even a simple SYN flood will probably knock most delegates offline (out of ethical concerns, I have not put this theory to the test).

Has this angle been covered? Have we as community considered the impact of a DDoS on the delegates? Finding all of their IPs to target seems trivial.

Perhaps present delegates can comment on this? Have you seen such attempts against your machines ? Or perhaps increased frequency of (e.g) SSH bruteforce attempts?

General Discussion / Imagine..
« on: May 19, 2015, 07:56:17 am »
This came to me in a dream last night..

Crypto enthusiasts are likely, in my experience, to see cryptocurrency as alternatives to the banking system.
As we know here in the forum (but the rest of the world doesn't, see https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php/topic,16399.0.html), BitShares is probably the best bet to preserve crypto wealth. BTC and the others are just too volatile.

I wouldn't be confortable storing my life saving  in Bitcoin because of that. But in a mixture of BitAssets? Don't see why not (when we get past 1.0 though :D).

Now, one thing led to another and I was asking myself before falling asleep.. but what about normal users, people who are not in this to be shareholders, people who just want to do their shopping online and what not. Surely BitUSD is a better choice for that than BTC, but BTC having first mover advantage.. it's not going to be easy to displace.

At this point remember one of the unique feats of BitShares.. it allows for storing wealth in BitAssets.

And here is what came to me in the dream.. what if instead of aligning ourselves against evil greedy banks in the good fight against tyranny (tm).. what if we integrate bitshares with the banking system?

Preposterous, you say! Allow me to further explain.
Keep in mind this is geared for normal users, chances are you or me wouldn't do it like this. Because we prefer having the control over our wealth. Because we prefer the increased privacy that BitShares+TITAN can provide.

Realize though that for most people these are not true. It's probably only  a matter of time until Jane Doe loses all her funds due to not having a backup or the wallet, or if this thing takes off, you can bet that there will be many a malware waiting behind that click to penetrate your BTS like Sansa Stark couldn't even imagine.

So, say Jane has an account at HSBC. She wants to send some money to her daughter who happens to be studying in Kenya!
At the present moment her options are basically a wire transfer (fees) or Western Union (moar fees). [Yes, BTC would work; if it's cashed out quickly the wealth should be preserved.. but how many Janes have you seen using BTC lately?]

What if BitAssets were integrated into Jane's bank system, and she could simply do a "BitShares transfer" from the online banking page ?

Let us say this is a transfer made in USD. Jane has no BitUSD, but she has USD.
So Jane goes online, sends 2000 USD to her daughter who is in Kenya, and selects "Use the BTS Network (TM) for this transfer".

Instead of outrageous fees and waiting for a few days, there are no fees (though banks being banks, they will probably still charge a very small fee), and it is instant.

The USD gets deducted from her account, the bank sends BitUSD to the bank in Kenya with a memo identifying her daughters' account, and instantly the daughter gets the money (the BitUSD are converted to USD as needed).

For a non-technical person who already has a bank account, this has several advantages:
  - 0 setup time.
  - Not giving personal data to yet another company.
  - None/low fees, instant transfers, vs lots of fees and waiting for days.

The Bank wins something here as well since they are likely to charge a small fee for processing it through BitShares. Fine, Jane thinks. Better pay $5 than $50.

BitShares sees widespread adoption and shareholders are happy (and for some reason all smoking lots of cuban cigars).

Now I'm not saying it would be easy to have the banks integrate their systems with the BitShares network... but I am saying that with focused effort it could be possible.

What do you think? Pipe dream? Any angle I missed ? (It was only a dream, after all :D)

Greetings,

I am wondering if anyone who is presently running a node could comment on disk space requirements / CPU% usage / used memory when running bitshares continuously.

For a knowledgeable developer, I would also like to ask how much was the code written with portability in mind - will it run easily on BSD and Solaris?

To me and possibly many of you, one of the great possibilities of BTS is beginning to bypass the legacy banking system as often as possible.

In this, we are in agreement with cryptocur users, whatever their choice of coin may be.

We are also no strangers to the perils of leaving cash at exchanges, and with the string of more or less regular "thefts" from exchanges, a decent pie of crypto users are wary to leave their money at the exchange - and rightly so.

It seems to me that BTS is the perfect complement for a modern cryptocur user. We don't always want to be exposed to the volatility of the prices. Moving back and forth between the banking system and the exchange is silly, and leaving money at the exchange is not prudent.

This is one of the areas where BitAssets can really shine.

It is my belief that one of the big impediments for (e.g) a bitcoin user to use (e.g) dash is simply tribal loyalty. He seems himself as a bitcoiner, and wants to stay away from those other guys. In my opinion this has prevented many a crypto enthusiast from making better investment decisions, but this is not my point.

BitShares does not compete with the other coins in the same way. We are complementary, not adversarial.
If bitcoin is falling, then why not store your wealth in BitUSD (or BitSilver, or..) for the time being?

I know I have, and it's saved me more than 1K.

Presently I do not think the users of these coins know that there is an alternative.
If that assessment is correct, I propose that we begin identifying the most direct/impactful ways to spread the word about this - in forums, bitcoin/altcoin centric websites, reddit, and so on.

Altough we ought to wait until some of the issues with the client are fixed, or it will leave a bad impression.
That is no impediment to start planning the strategy now.

Thoughts?

General Discussion / BitShares fate under hyperinflation
« on: April 16, 2015, 08:22:28 pm »
Today I was wondering what would happen to the BitShares ecosystem, should the dollar experience hyperinflation.

If the information that the system will hold as long as BTS does not lose ~60% of value in a few hours is still correct, would this not spell the demise of the system in the case of hyperinflation followed by occasional (almost necessarily severe) bouts of deflation?

In other words, is the whole BitShares ecosystem tied to the fate of the contemporary elastic government/central bank-issued paper money?

I am not sure if the site administrator (bitsharesblocks.com) realizes this is so, but accessing over Tor yields a blank page, even after filling Cloudflare's stinky captcha.

Please consider fixing the webserver configuration and allow Tor users to reach the site.. thanks.

Technical Support / Incorrect TITAN instructions in wiki
« on: April 01, 2015, 01:33:43 pm »
http://wiki.bitshares.org/index.php/TITAN#Terminal_Mode

I ran the command, went to the faucet manually and registered the account, then enable_raw and blockchain_get_account .. and type: is public_account.

Would anyone know how to create a titan account?

Technical Support / Multiple wallets supported?
« on: April 01, 2015, 12:32:54 pm »
I'm thinking of separating accounts logically in wallets. Through the console it seems to be possible, though I am still finding out the necessary commands.

Does the GUI support operating like this as all ? Through 'Import wallet', I would suppose.

Technical Support / Two simple questions
« on: March 23, 2015, 08:11:04 pm »
Here's a couple of Q's that have been on my mind the last few days:

- Is it possible to delete accounts from the wallet? If yes, how?

- Is it possible to convert non-TITAN to TITAN through the gui or cmdline ? Any major downsides to using TITAN accounts? [why is it not the default?]

90
Since there isn't any proxying support so far, I'm wondering, what information can an adversary who can monitor everything that goes in and out learn ?

Ie,

- Accounts & their balances
- Transactions made & received

Ideally the adversary would be able to learn nothing more than "this person uses bitshares". Can some developer confirm this to be the case, and possibly comment on the eventual future inclusion of proxy (SOCKS5 preferred) support in the client?
