General Discussion / Unfortunately, it seems clear to me ..

That Bitshares is never going to have private transactions.

Dan has gone off the deep end about the privacy topic, Stan is all about regulation and playing nice with the SEC now, and kenCode who with his team was supposed to deliver on this months ago, has to the best of my knowledge been remarkably quiet about the subject for quite some time now.

Could it be that I'm just out of the loop?

General Discussion / BTS dropped from Shapeshift? Alternatives?
« on: March 14, 2018, 09:12:10 pm »
For the longest time, BTS was grayed out on shapeshift; today I noticed it's apparently been completely removed.

Any idea what happened?

Alternatives?

Interesting perspective, I assumed it was the node that was having trouble staying in sync.

It could also be that due to bad network conditions the wallet is erroneously interpreting that as the node not being in sync.

I run a NTP client, so clock is in sync.

Didn't mean to come off as demanding, it's frustration more than anything. I'll keep it unedited, they say expressing your emotions is good.

Technical Support / All public nodes down / extremely slow?
« on: February 06, 2018, 08:34:59 am »
Been noticing this for a few days, it's almost impossible to connect to a node, and when finally connected, intermittently the warning "YOUR ACTIVE NODE IS OUT OF SYNC" keeps popping up, with all sorts of interesting effects, like most order-placing timing out and having to be re-submitted.

I am still under adverse network conditions due to travel, but the rest of the Internet works. Slower than normal, but it works.

If I go to settings -> access, literally all nodes appear as UNREACHABLE.

Anyone else experiencing the same?

Technical Support / Can someone explain to me?
« on: February 06, 2018, 08:32:51 am »
Let's ignore the recent massive price drop, as it has no bearing on what I'm about to say.

Can someone explain to me, why the wallet is tracking all users and sending this data to openledger? https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php/topic,25938.0.html

Can someone explain to me, why the screen is still blank on startup, while in the background TCP connections are being attempted, in the mean time leaving the interface in a completely unhelpful and unusable state? This will be the first contact many new users have with Bitshares - think they'll stay?

Can someone explain to me why the USD values displayed in the wallet are all different from each other? My total balance, open margin positions, sell value on the market page etc, all differ from each other, they do not add up.

Can someone explain to me, how can "MY ACTIVE NODE BE OUT OF SYNC" while at the same time having "NO BLOCKCHAIN CONNECTION" ?

Can someone explain to me, why even after setting a specific node to connect to, the wallet is still spraying & praying and trying to connect to nodes all over the world? (snitching to openledger in the process, see gripe #1)

We have (had? will have again?) hundreds of thousands of dollars available for development.

How is it possible that years later, this is still the state of the official wallet?

I don't think a fork is the answer.

General Discussion / OpenLedger is tracking you.
« on: February 06, 2018, 08:23:32 am »
And I don't mean due to the transparent nature of the blockchain.

Try to connect to the Berlin node,  toggle the devtools.

You'll see, from w.js, a GET /widgets/2/w.js?ref=some-unique-identifier HTTP/1.1

As if that wasn't enough, there's also a cookie (it stays the same between program restarts), and also your (also very unique) User Agent is sent with every request too - check the request headers for this.

So not one, not two, but three unique tracking mechanisms at first glance.

Well done, whoever added that. Well done.

One more step
Please complete the security check to access bitsharestalk.org
Why do I have to complete a CAPTCHA?
Completing the CAPTCHA proves you are a human and gives you temporary access to the web property.
What can I do to prevent this in the future?
If you are on a personal connection, like at home, you can run an anti-virus scan on your device to make sure it is not infected with malware.
If you are at an office or shared network, you can ask the network administrator to run a scan across the network looking for misconfigured or infected devices.
Another way to prevent getting this page in the future is to use Privacy Pass. Check out the browser extension in the Firefox Add-ons Store.

First of all, allow me to share my frustration by pasting the oh-so-familiar intrusive cloudflare prompt that users who care about anonymity and privacy are lambasted with whenever they visit this forum.

Which, actually, is a good indicator of how much privacy and anonymity are (unfortunately, not) valued in this otherwise great community.

The elementary problem, besides the apparent decision to move to a platform (Telegram) where your real phone number is necessary to participate (beginning to see a trend regarding privacy here?) and which automatically excludes people who care about privacy and anonymity, is simple.

In monero everything is obscured by default, whether it be the addresses involved, or the amounts involved.

The proposed (or actual, I guess, altough it's essentially next to useless, as no official GUI was ever developed for the stealth feature that already exists, thus essentially guaranteeing it will never see wide adoption, thus essentially guaranteeing that it's next to useless) and actual privacy solutions for Bitshares (and indeed, every other "crypto"currency out there; this is **precisely** what makes monero stand out) is that privacy is **optional**.

This not only dramatically decreases the anonymity set, it also makes anyone and anything using private transactions stand out.

I tried to bring this to the community's attention for literally years and was met with mostly indifference. Same with the usage of Cloudflare on the forum (you better not be reusing your password on the forum with other things, or you better *really* trust cloudflare).

Although I'm happy to see that the BTS/USD price has risen considerably since I detached from here (mostly due to the aforementioned reasons), as plenty of people here have stuck around for years, believed in this project and helped it moved forward, and they deserve a reward for their loyalty ...

I simply don't see Bitshares ever taking off, when the basic premise is that **anyone anywhere** can see **everything** that **anyone** does.

With bitcoin and similar "cryptos", at least there is an illusion of privacy because of the multiple addresses that a wallet will typically use.
With bitshares there is no illusion, you can snoop on anyone's entire bitshares career simply by knowing their account name.

Couple this with other poor security decisions like the newer wallet versions querying every public node on the planet on startup, bake it together with the fact that to this day there is no proxying support in the wallet (thus ensuring that all but the most technically sophisticated users will be connecting from their real IPs to all these nodes, which may or may not be logging your IP and account name).

See the pattern? Privacy has simply never been a major drive around here. In fact, to my dismay, I've seen it repeatedly argued that it's actually a good thing™ that everything is visible.

My only hope is that the people who are too blind to understand the implications of the widespread usage of such a system, don't forcibly drag the rest of us down with them.

General Discussion / Re: How "OPEN" should we be?
« on: October 28, 2017, 06:24:46 pm »

if you have money in a blockchain your history is open.

https://getmonero.org/

Quote from: oxarbitrage
in bitshares the account history is already open to everyone that want to look. the plugin does not do anything than what it is already possible  with current api calls. where is the problem with the plugin ? i still don't get it.

The account history should have never been open for everyone to see. It is something that I believe bytemaster greatly overlooked in the 2.0 design, in the rush to get the (vastly superior, except for some details, such as this one - unfortunately, a major oversight, in my opinion) graphene technology online in the form of Bitshares 2.0.

People are not that stupid, or at least I hope so - with bitcoin and other such coins (essentially 99.999% of the stuff out there) the concept of addresses makes the uninitiated believe that the thing is modestly private (turns out, that's not really true).

With an account name (good idea), however, without privacy (bad idea), people easily and viscerally realize that they are naked, and very few people would want the whole world to know everything about their financial history.

And why must it be on by default, the private transactions? Well, simple, if privacy is opt-in, the anonymity set is that much smaller, private transactions stuck out, rather than blending in.

Once again, the monero guys got it right. We would do well to learn from them.

The potential for BTS is so huge, but without privacy, it's doomed. Nobody in their right mind wants to broadcast their whole financial life to the whole internet to see.

and to me the most transparent and open the blockchain is, the best, it's an advantage against all traditional systems but that is just my view of it

Well, fortunately you can put your actions where your mouth is --

Would you be willing to share with everyone here your full name, residential address, any and all bank accounts you have, and if possible, provide by means of API access read-only access to all of your accounts so that any of us can trace all of your bank transactions?

If no API access is possible, don't despair - we'll settle for a screenshots of all your current balances, plus your last 5 tax returns.

Thank you, help make the world a better place.

Your original thread inspired me to write this - https://steemit.com/cryptocurrency/@karnal/privacy-in-the-digital-age

There is zero mention of confidential/private transactions, in the poll, your OP, and all of the replies, which I find appalling; I took half an hour to write something about it, in sort of a bigger-picture kind of way.

Hopefully it helps framing why private transactions being discounted will ultimately, as far as I can see it, spell obsolescence for bitshares.

We're already 1.5 years late, going to the 3rd reimplementation of the platform, and privacy has never been taken seriously.

It won't take off without it. I hope I'm not the only one who can see it.

I wish this would've generated more discussion.. just doesn't seem to be such a big issue, which baffles me completely.
