What do witnesses & others think about this?

I'm convinced it could be big for Bitshares -- the reasons I have detailed here: http://steem.link/dD0OP

Let me know your opinions ..

tl;dr?

I seem to have missed the part where you explain where the yield comes from.

Naturally, because I never explained it :P

Presumably from trading fees, worker proposals, and so on, but it wasn't something that I really wanted to get in on the post.

Rather, the main question was .. does it even make sense to have yield (for smartcoins), in terms of sound economics.

And while I wouldn't mind if my bitUSD magically grew for essentially doing nothing, it does seem unsound: other than using Bitshares, I'm taking pretty close to zero risk (black swan) holding the funds there - the same way holding a dollar bill doesn't give you any interest.

And we are hailing this sort of technologies as digital cash, right?

Being able to set positive/negative yield (aka interest/demurrage) to bitshares assets is not a bad idea. In case of smartcoins, tweaking the yield could affect the amount of coins in circulation. Positive yield would increase the balance of holders and debt of shorters by same amount, increasing the amount of coins in circulation and demand for new coins. Negative yield would decrease shorter's debt and holder's balance, destroying coins, and motivate to short them.

How many people do you know who would park thousands of bitUSD in Bitshares, fully well knowing that due to influences outside of their control, they could use 1, 3, +5%, even more of their value?

At least to me, that would be more than enough deterrent to not even touch it.

The 5% interest on anything was a major selling point for BTSX (Hell, it has an emoji here! +5%). I would love to be able to set interest on UIA/MPA.

I would as well, as I wrote in the steemit post.

What do you think of the argument I outlined as to why perhaps that is not a good idea?

Technical Support / Smartcoins yield: Yay / Nay ?

Lately I have been thinking about whether Smartcoins should return to .. returning yield for hodling or not.

Wrote a little something over at steemit, http://steem.link/OlG2g

I still think the forum is a better place to discuss any such topics longterm, hence this post.

Hoping it will generate discussion both here and on steemit. Very interested in your opinion!

General Discussion / Re: CoinsBank as an off ramp for BitShares?

This is still a very obvious and untackled business opportunity for an aspiring entrepreneur, especially when you consider that Bitshares has "direct debit" support baked in.

ATM there is no other blockchain technology more tailored to this particular use case than Bitshares/graphene.

@svk

I was actually using dele-puppy.com, which appears to be unreachable.

I waited as long as 20 minutes, the dots continued, so at that point I just shut network access off completely, and that brought the "application initialization issues" screen forward, and at that point it was easy to correct.

It should timeout on its own though, tricky situation.

@xeroc brought to my attention last week something called privatized bitassets.

Apparently there is a way to run your own smartcoin without witness assistance.

I would be very interested to learn more about how to set that up..

General Discussion / Re: Smart contracts on Bitshares
« on: September 02, 2016, 10:47:58 am »
Can anyone point me in the right direction for some resources on smart contract functionality on the Graphene chain. Are there any working examples or articles on how to go about it? Cheers
Smart contracts are contracts that get executed on the chain.
On BitShares you can only INSTALL those contracts by upgrading (read hardforking) the network (In contrast to ethereum where you can just put anycode on the blockchain)
However, in contrast to Bitcoin, hardforking BitShares isn't much of a hazzle because you can simply bring it to the shareholders attention and have them approve your code (another difference to ethereum)
Once the shareholders went through rigorous testing of your code, they give approval and the network can easily migrate over withing seconds.

Seems cumbersome.

Technical Support / Dots. Dots everywhere.

For some days now, when starting the wallet, all it shows is the moving dots that come up after "Loading ...".

I did a quick grep -RiH for the API endpoint hostname in ~/.config/Bitshares, but nothing comes up.

Ideas?

That's.. absurd.

I think how you do your custom logos for each show is very cool.

Thanks man :)

You're "it should be obvious why" may just be about Steemit being low in energy (mostly because of the Anarchist takeover, and ironic hierarchical nature of it) and STEEM being low in value, but in case you are indicating disappointment in STEEM and Steemit as a whole, I want to point out 2 things.

1 Look at Bitcoin charts from when it was Between $1 and $10. Then wait until Christmas and watch what STEEM does.

2 Wait for Steemit's alpha (actual) launch, and watch what STEEM does.

Who are you talking about and with respect to what?

I think he just completely misunderstood your motivation for posting the announcements here again.
