General Discussion / Re: BitShares 0.7.0 Feedback
« on: March 23, 2015, 07:50:26 pm »
Here's my experience with 0.7.0 so far:

- Download the linux version, realize it's just the cli, not the gui. Have to compile it.

- For some reason, BitShares 0.7.0 decides it's a good idea to resynchronize the whole blockchain. 5-6 hours go by.

- When I come back home and check on the progress, the wallet needs to be unlocked. No problem -- or so I thought;
The unlock never really happened, the little dots were going for 7 minutes, at which point I closed the window.
The process didn't die. A pkill BitS later and it's gone.

- Re-run BitShares, let it sync the remaining 14 days that were left. Realize ~90% of my funds are missing.

Guys, I'm sorry but this is easily the most buggy piece of software I've had the displeasure of interacting with over the last decade and a half. And I've used software. A lot.

The only two positive things:
  - The wallet appears to be very noticeably faster.
  - No segfault this time (previously [0.6.0] it segfaulted while syncing the blockchain)

FYI this is on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

Besides removing all files/dirs except wallet/, is there a way to convince the software to properly reflect my funds once again? I realize they are there, as long as I have the private keys (which I do, in backup plus the accounts do show up, it's the balance that's wrong)

Indeed the above has fixed it for me on 0.6.2 before.

Do we have any idea what's causing this issue?

General Discussion / Re: UIA Overhaul in Bitshares 0.7.0?
« on: March 22, 2015, 08:27:28 pm »
^^ Is there any logic to the X.Y.Z versioning?

Because having 0.7.0 and then 0.8.0 a week or two later seems a bit.... strange.

Almost as if we're rushing madly all the way to 1.0.

General Discussion / Re: how to change between TITAN &NON TITAN?
« on: March 18, 2015, 04:53:34 pm »
Well, that confirms it.. unfortunately this is yet another example of outdated documention, as I am pretty sure about having done the necessary research and reading that TITAN would be there by default.

At this point I can no longer assume any documentation in our wiki is correct. This is cause for concern, since few amongst us actually have the time to go through the source code digging for how stuff works (and even fewer could actually do that).

Could someone knowledgeable on this topic explain:

- Whether my privacy has been completely compromised - ie, can anyone get the current balance and complete past history of my accounts

- Whether it is possible to convert the account to TITAN, and if yes, how to do so.

- The consequences of switching to TITAN at this point (ie, the privacy implications of doing so)

Thanks..

Since there isn't any proxying support so far, I'm wondering, what information can an adversary who can monitor everything that goes in and out learn ?
Ie,
- Accounts & their balances
- Transactions made & received
Ideally the adversary would be able to learn nothing more than "this person uses bitshares". Can some developer confirm this to be the case, and possibly comment on the eventual future inclusion of proxy (SOCKS5 preferred) support in the client?
accounts & balances are stored on the blockchain .. obviously .. so you cannot gain extra information from listening to the machines ..
if you are connected to many machines you may be able to identify an ip address that might have access to funds and identify a person/organization that holds an address

you may gain information about which IP addresses are delegates and which ones run a default full-node using timing-analysis

You could, if the information is sent in the clear, ie after sending funds from an account in your wallet to anywhere. Transactions that you receive could be for anyone, they end up on everyone's computer by design, but transactions being broadcast FROM your computer? Very simple to figure out what's happening there..

Is the connection to the bitshares network encrypted? If not, why, and are there plans to implement it?

Ouch... :-[

Would you know how to confirm which account type it is, from the console?

So the default account type is TITAN, when created from the GUI, yes?

Random Discussion / Accessing forum over TOR increasingly harder
« on: March 18, 2015, 03:04:00 pm »
As a privacy-aware netizen, I do most of my browsing through the Tor network. Browsing this site is no exception,

Since the beginning, I've met with "This request has been denied for security reasons. If you believe this was in error, please contact support." at least a few times every day.

It could be my imagination but lately, this is happening more and more frequently.

Please keep access to the forum through Tor possible, there are some here who're 100% legit and access via tor 100% of the time.

Can I earn some kind of regular income NOW from bitshares or bitassets?
BitUSD Yield?

I've got bitassets now and am buying at every opportunity. The yield that the bitshares client shows me.. can i have that reinvested automatically somehow? like, take that yield earned and auto-buy some more bitshares or other bitassets? now that would be true income....

not at the moment. I collect Yield once a week for example

Hmm, that is actually a very good/pertinent post. Seems that unless we move the interest^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hyield every X months, then it is actually just interest, and not compound interest.

This should definitely be a feature, and it should be extremely easy to implement: at its simplest, the client would provide a dialog to ask how often to compound (ie, transfer to ourselves in order to trigger yield gains, if I understand it correctly).

Technical Support / Re: Why do I want to track a BitAsset?
« on: March 17, 2015, 06:06:10 pm »
I like being able to go back and forth between a wide variety of assets as they cycle against each other in the market.

I can switch between BTS, BTC, Gold, Silver, CNY, EUR, and USD for about a penny in ten seconds as often as I like.

I can also create my own basket of currencies and adjust the mix as often as I like for pennies.

And I never encounter the delays, costs and risks of passing through fiat space.

Where else can you do that?

This.
